The motion of hitting a nail with a hammer but the stick is turning a little bit sideway for the american grip to form unless it become french grip. This technique is powerful and become muscle memory once you get it right.
It's very interesting how similar this technique is to Mike Mangini's in a way. There's a guy called Riccardo Merlini who's is extremely fast (like +300bpm fast), and was a student of Mangini in Berkeley and he teaches that technique. He describes it as a rotation of the wrist, like turning a knob, while also using fingers, kinda just like Hannes showed, but he uses more wrist. I think Hannes can probably also play without rebound, which aside from power, is the biggest advantage of that technique. I love seeing unconventional techniques like this and Marthyn's own hybrid technique for instance, that show how versatile you can be as a drummer.
Great advice: i prefer to go even farther: i take away the index and lay the stick on the first nuckle auf the middle finger. The index mains only as aguide. Now i make a move which is similar to this „hybrid motion“. But no matter how in detail: its important to create a motion of the sticks in the hand with the fingers. The wirst then is only a creator of momentum and swing.

Finally someone mentioned Riccardo Merlini!
That guy's technique is nuts!
He's back!

In drumming, every movement you do is "kinda like dribbling a basket ball" xD
But it literally is true
This was a good video Martyn
What a long winded answer to a simple question
