I actually was more extroverted before I was a dentist. After two decades of having to deal with the public, I am now extremely introverted. I disagree that the introverts have an advantage. When you are having a bad day, or just don't want to talk? You still have to come to work with your 'happy face' on, and interact with patients, whether you want to or not. It is very draining both mentally and emotionally. Fortunately, I am very good at 'faking it' while at work. I routinely get compliments from patients such as "It's easy to see how much you love your job." When the hard truth is that I will retire as soon as I am financially able to do so. And not only does it affect my work-life, but outside of the office, the only interactions I want are with my wife and kids. I am seeing more and more dentists that feel the same way.

Im introverted with most friends and family members but with patients im like not extroverted but definitely not myself with others. I feel secure of myself and I show that.

That was great, I really appreciate your videos, started with your public health one a few days ago, made me really think more about mapping out my career as I enter my D1 year!

This was such an interesting perspective! I am more so extroverted but one of the dentists i shadowed proved you don’t need high energy when talking to patients. Thanks Doc!

Im a hygienist and also introverted, this made me feel a bit better. Sometimes I feel like being introverted is my biggest weakness. I love watching your videos!

I think people confuse introversion with shyness. I am introverted, but I am not shy. I can introduce myself to people, hold conversation and place the spotlight on the patient, but ultimately it boils down to playing to my strength of playing it cool. I have mastered emotional control (stoicism) in my life so that i am not transferring undesired energy to patients or staff. That comes at a price, however, because you need an outlet to release the energy and tension from the day. And I do that by retreating to solitude. I love dentistry a lot because it allows me to think and make well informed decisions. I am always open to patients about needing more time or second opinions about treatment, and they appreciate me for that!

Thank you so much for this! I was shying away from dentistry due to my personality type. But there are definitely so many introvert dentists rocking it out there! This video has certainly reassured me.)

Don't ask me how my life is going tomorrow. If you don't want to talk about your life then hopefully your hygienist wants to talk about her life. 🤣

Great video! You seem like a chill dude. Make a video about the pros and cons of practicing in rural vs urban settings.

OMG, thankyou soooo much ❤️❤️,it's my last year at dentistry school and i've been confused all this year if i will continue as a dentist or i have to change my future plans, im introvert, and i saw a video before said that if you are not a people person ,dentistry is not for you, i was so depressed for a long time ,you made me feel better now, i hope you will put a lot of videos how an introvert can treat patients, thankyou so much. ❤️❤️
