@@DIYwithMichaelBorders in a tight spot, thought I needed to rebuild the upper unit on alpha one gen one drive. But turns out it is the lower half that is in rough shape. But after pricing all parts and tools I’m over 1000.00 dollars easy, but I can by a SEI lower unit for less than that, so I’ll do that and rebuild as time allows and have a spare, looks like the direction I’m headed.

Mr. Borders, have you done a Alpha 1 gen 2 Oil Seal yet? want to see the distance between the two small seals.

i’m not very well acquainted with engines, but why do manufacturers make the insert out of plastic if it’s going to be housed in an extremely hot cast iron upper unit that obviously eventually melts it? Would it not make sure sense to keep it all metal?

This procedure is for GEN 1, not GEN 2, right?

At 9:55 you show the seal being installed with the spring facing the water jacket. Are you sure this is correct? I have two separate alpha ones and both of them have the seal with the flat side facing the water and the spring side facing the oil. (or put another way, when looking UP into the upper housing if it were mounted on the boat, you can see the flat side of the seal with the part number stamped in it)

Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. We are positive for our specific alpha serial #.
They made alpha drives for a few years so we highly recommend following your specific serial # service manual.

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders This is in fact a difference between the gen 1 and gen 2 alpha drives. On a gen 1 drive, the lower oil seal is installed in the opposite orientation. Strange!

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Hi Mike- You make the most awesome videos! I'm a retired GM tech so not quite a DIYer in mechanics but I definitely didn't work on outdrives every day. You are so patient and precise in your commentary. Very relaxing to follow. I rarely comment but I did want thank you for your professionalism. However, on this particular seal installation I disagree. I too have a 1989 Alpha 1 Gen 1 with a 3.0L in my Maxum boat I purchased brand new. 35 years later I still have it with only around 350 hours on it. I bought the factory manuals when I purchased the boat new. I'm finally replacing the bellows before they leak and my 3rd impeller replacement. Even though I have the manuals it is helpful to see live videos of the process to go along with the service manual - Thank you. I completely agree with your upper seal installation however I suggest you check your service manual for the lower seal orientation again. In my factory manual it is page 3A-24 step 15 referring to the lower seal. "........drive shaft housing lower oil seal and install oil seal with lips facing up (toward top of housing)" Since the seal is being installed with the unit upside down from the bottom the "top of housing" is now down and would indicate lips down from the point of view of installation. This only makes sense. In my years of experience installing hundreds of lip seals, the spring and lip goes toward what you are trying to keep in as the pressure of whatever your wanting to keep in tries to get out it pushes the lips tighter against the sealing surface. In this instance you want the grease kept in the spline / gear area. Looking at my virgin seal (still factory installed) the lips of the lower seal faces up towards the top of the housing as described in the service manual. Looking at your part 1 it is difficult to tell but it appears lips are up toward top of housing before you knock them out. Also as you have them set out on the white paper towel too. On another application of lip seals, double or multi lip seals should be used on boat trailer wheel bearings. The spring and lip side goes toward the grease then there is a second lip but no spring that faces the outside to keep water out. Sometimes hard to find. Depending on your axle size a National /Federal-Mogul seal number 470460 is an example. These fit my boat trailer. You may likely have this in one of your other videos. Thank you again for such great detailed content. Keep up the fantastic work.

I have a 4cylinder outdrive with 1.94 ratio gears in the upper and I'm not sure where to find the whole upper rebuild kit. Where did you find yours at?

Hey Nick, thanks for watching. We use several vendors however one of the most popular is:
      Marineengine.com
On this website, you can enter in your exact serial number, make, and model.
All available replacement parts for your exact engine will become available.

Thank you! Is that the gen one? I have a gen two it’s slightly different. My oil seal seems smaller and is only rubber with the metal spring inside. It looked like there was two oil seals double stacked as well. Is that normal? Thank you again!

Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. This is an Alpha one Gen 1.
The Gen 1 has one large oil seal near yoke shaft & two oil seals for the driveshaft.
Your Gen 2 will be slightly different. We have found it helpful to look at:
      Marineengine.com
You can scroll down and select Mercruiser and then enter in your outdrive serial #. Then you can click on the upper unit schematic for your exact engine which is pretty awesome.
