  • After a couple of failed attempts I finally managed to make it to Fur Tor for a good old Dartmoor Wild Camp. Fur Tor is the most remote place on Dartmoor and it has been a goal of mine to visit ever since I started trekking and camping out in the bleak Dartmoor Wilderness.
    The trek out proved to be fairly straight forward in the end, and a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I had a great camp site overlooking the moors and the Devon fields beyond.
    I hope you enjoy watching this video, If you have any feedback or comments on it I would love to hear them,
    All the best, Ryan

    Hi Ryan, I'm still to do Fur Tor but it looks like a nice spot and an interesting hike. Good luck with the N to S, mine will hopefully be this coming week and I'm starting from Belstone too. ATB, John.

      Cheers John. It is a really nice Tor, took me a while to finally get there but it was worth the wait! I have not managed to do the N to S yet, I am heading up to the Rhinogs this week for a few nights, and am going to try and get the N to S done in September. Wuold be interested to hear how it goes for you!

    Glad you made it finally. I stomped out there from Princetown using map and compass via Wistmans wood, crow, white tors, browns house, rowter, East Dart falls, Cowflow bottom, statts house, Teign head, cut hill finally Fur tor. Bit zig zagging as I was ticking off 365 squares. Letterboxing is still alive but not many venture to Fur tor. I found one on the main tor. Great video, makes nice viewing. Where's the next trip too?

      Wow, that sounds like a proper Trek Nikki! Glad to know you enjoyed the video, I am still finding my feet with the filming side of things. I have been out a few times since this camp, and have a bit of a backlog to work through. But, the next camp I have planned is a 2-3 nighter, looking to do Belstone to Ivybridge to start off, and then see what else I can cover in the time I have left. Have been speaking to a couple of people about the letter boxes, so I am thinking about getting a stamp made up :)

      @@ryanrunningwild your next one sounds good. I'm doing similar, Okehampton to Ivybridge via Postbridge and zig zagging about again over 4 nights this time. I normally do 3 nights but pushing to 4 this time, 2 weeks tomorrow (Thursday) I'm off. I did 45 miles roughly last time in total. This one is about 55. Can't wait to see your next videos 🙂

    Nice one Ryan got there at last 👍
    Im still to make the pilgrimage.
    Good to see you out in the hex,
    As soon as you get the hang of it you'll love it.
    The most important thing is to peg the original rectangle out nice and square if that makes sense lol.
    We'll have to get together for a hex peak camp one day 👍

    • @ryanrunningwild
      @ryanrunningwild  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Dean, yeah you are not wrong, the "square" of the rectangle does seem to be the key, then getting the height right. It is a lovely tent, and I am getting the hang on pitching it, but not quite 100%. Would be great to get a hex peak camp going, especially now that the restrictions are finally ending!

    That wire brush was there when I was up there last month, climbers use brushes to clean the rocks of lichen and loose material to make it less slippery, it's either been forgotten or left there.

    • @ryanrunningwild
      @ryanrunningwild  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Make sense r.e the wire brush. I had a suspicion that it was not meant to be there and was considering taking it home to the bin, but, did not like the thought of getting it wrong and removing some sort of communal essential :)

    I am glad that you finally made it to Fur, it's been a long time coming bud! I'm glad to say, I think you've nailed your initial audio issues - nice one. That Wayfarer choc pud has been on as many outings as my one I reckon. I doubt I'll ever get around to eating mine, I'm not a desert type person either, but it does sound nice lol I've not had any joy with Summit 2 Eat meals at all, always look like baby vomit and have little to no good texture. I've come to the conclusion that Wayfarer work better for me. I really like the quilt mate, looks proper snug! For me though, I seem to be getting along with my bag since I swapped for the OEX Fathom. It's much more comfortable for side sleeping than my old Regatta POS. As the summer warms up a bit I think I'll be using it less and just use my Snugpack Jungleblanket more.
    Anyway Ryan, as usual mate, great vid. Really enjoyed it, thank you for sharing!

      Cheers bud, spoiler alert, it was not that great.... I would heartily recommend Adventure Foods ( shocker ) I know food is subjective, but, I really like them. I had Green Thai curry with rice on my last camp and it was great. The only one I have had which was questionable was the pasta carbonara, but that was still perfectly edible.
      The Fathom is a decent sleeping bag, I think I just dont get on with bags in general!

    • @lewisgardner1660
      @lewisgardner1660 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We only did it a few times, we live in Essex near Colchester so it’s a long drive down to Dartmoor so we used to do it when we hired a cottage done there. Do you live far away from Dartmoor? One of the worst trips down there took us nearly 9 house it’s was traffic jam after traffic jam from the time we hit the m25 right down to Exeter.

    • @ryanrunningwild
      @ryanrunningwild  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lewisgardner1660 that makes sense, yeah the m5 can be a friggin nightmare sometimes. I only live about 40 mins drive from Dartmoor so it is practically on my doorstep. Is there some kind of register for where the letterboxes are, or is hunting them down part of the fun?

    • @lewisgardner1660
      @lewisgardner1660 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We used to bye the book and it gives you clues where they are, it gives compass bearings and land marks, there are a lot of letter boxes that are not the official ones, The ones in the book take you right off the beaten track, I think you can download it on you phone now, some times we would be out all day and not rind one lol, I think we still have out book with very minimal amount of stamps found lol.
