I am waiting to get all the specs on it as its not the fresnel screen that everyone thinks it is - its a different one I think from AWOL vision sister company to Valerion.
Yes, please review the screen. They offer an add-on screen in the Kickstarter campaign but I’m not sure which screen that is. They do have a fresnel screen that’s available but I’m not sure if that’s for UST or short/medium throw.

You're one of the few TH-cam reviewers I genuinely trust to care about providing accurate, high-quality content for the home theater community. As a first-time projector owner I'm finding picking out a screen to be a very daunting task and the FB group for Valerion. Has a lot of mixed messages
Thanks for the kind words and I hope the Pro2 lives up to your expectations - it certainly is the best DLP projector I have every reviewed and that's not something I would often say. The black levels alone make it a superb choice. The screen, I want to review it but I am so under the pump at the moment with videos its a ways down on my list. The plus side is you saw it in my review so I can say it works very well indeed.
Hi Tony, love the review and all of your content!!!!! Will the Valerion be replacing the Xgimi projector in your casual space? And do you have an Epson ls12000B review coming. Thanks again.
I think the Max will likely replace it. The XHU stays up for now. I need to get into the ceiling to run the power so I won’t do that until I get the max but also work out the best way to use the screen.
Hi and thanks for another informative review Tony! Question: When using EBL, did you ever notice any effects similar to dynamic iris light pumping or delayed contrast shifting? Or does the mode perform seamlessly/consistently, without you actually notice it activating/deactivating? I am curious since you mentioned that EBL uses an algorithm. Thanks!
Great questions and these are things I also looked for. This is probably the best implementation of EBL or laser dimming I've seen. I also am familiar with dynamic iris on my JVC and that works flawlessly as well, so it all depends on the projector you're using. The EBL on this unit is incredible. I'm not just saying it to be trendy! I am blown away by just how good it is. When the Max comes out, it is a strong contender for my main room.
You mentioned you had it on your screen before putting it on Valerion's ALR with some speckle. I'm curious what screen did you have it on? was it an UST screen? gain? I have a nothing projector black series for UST (I think gain is like 0.6) and was wondering how it would look with the Pro2.
@@byrontse73B The Installer tested it on a Fresnel screen and it looked great. You'd have to be careful how you positioned it though and keep it low down like Tony has here otherwise the light rejecting screen will do just that with any light coming from it downward.
I do plan on ceiling mounting this but likely it will create a lot of laser speckle when I do with this type of screen. I will need to test and report back in another video.
@@BuildMontage If you could test that setup it would be great. I did pledge for the Max as well as the ALR screen, but might have to cancel the screen if ceiling mounting causes major issues and find something else. For sure want the review of this screen! Before the Kickstarter is over, please 😂 Please compare with a basic grey matte screen, non ALR, for laser speckle and hot spotting. It's not easy to find a decent screen for a triple laser standard throw, and a regular ALR for sure won't work well since it contains reflective particles which sparkle everywhere. Valerian claims their screen is Fresnel, so it's got to be the first Fresnel screen for stand throw projectors, which makes it super interesting. Before, I think, those existed only for UST.
Unfortunately I won't be able to get that video done necessarily the way you are asking, I only have the Fresnel screen to work with. I will review it as such. It does work with other ceiling mounted projectors, but the feeling I have and need to confirm is if it creates laser speckle with the Pro2 when its ceiling mounted. That is the one thing I am concerned about as the advisory is to have the projector low down for a fresnel screen to work.
Nice review! Black levels with the ambient light makes the picture look washed out sadly and yet you don't even have a lot of ambient light. With a pure dark room, the black levels looked great.
Theres a LOT of light in the room. I basically tried to crush it to see how it would work and it held up better than 99% of other projectors would that Ive tested there. I had 6 LIFX downlights pumping at 100%. So yes it was washed out but that was with a tonne of light.
Excellent overview - I give them thumbs up for including 3D. Although I am not looking for a new projector right now, its nice to see someone trying to innovate DLP. My old Optoma projector was DLP and only the black levels let it down - otherwise I was pretty happy with it.
No I don't - I would recommend a screen, or even a roll up screen if you need to hide it away. Well worth it as walls are not even surfaces unfortunately and to compromise the image - create hotspots etc. I have tried paint before and I didn't like it. Can't remember though as it was a few years ago and I didn't buy it locally in Sydney.
Excellent review and great value product. Other DLP projectors must implement this tech, i know Barco does with the Dyna black and Christie is developing there own.
Agree, DLP has lacked black levels since forever, this is the first time I have seen close to JVC level blacks on a DLP, even more than Barco and Christie which I have experiences with as well. 3chip DLPs are better but for a single chip this is NUTS!

Hey Tony, thanks for the review :) Great Video as always! Do you know if the max model offers memory for the zoom and vertical lens shift position? I am considering this for my dedicated home theater room instead of the Epson LS12000. Any suggestions on which to get? Cheers mate, keep up the great work.
Out of curiosity what kind of viewing angle do you sit at there? I didn't realise the throw distance on this was so short. It's still a bit close for leg room there but if ceiling mounted it looks like you wouldn't get blasted in the eyes standing up to grab snacks as it would be mostly above you rather than behind you? If so I really like the idea of this as it provides that benefit of a UST but could still be used with an AT screen. On that note is that screen AT? If not could you fire it at your AT screen if you're willing to see if causes laser speckle or still looks good? The level of performance on offer at this price point here is insane. And to think it's not even the top model. Can't wait to see how the max performs.
Lots of questions here: I think my viewing angle from the chair is around 35deg last I measured but I have moved my chairs a little so I could be off. The projector can go way further back than it is, the zoom on this thing is nuts. I could also place it closer if necessary. I am going to test it in my main room with my JVC as a comparison to the PQ but my room is under construction, so when it's finished in a week or so I will do the tests. I think there will not be any laser speckle with my AT screen as I have tested tri lasers in there before and I dont see any.
Great review! Any chance you could share your calibration numbers that you used for the Valerion. I know it’s subjective but when you did it for the JMGO it made a noticeable difference for me… Thanks again!!
I have boxed the unit back up so I'll need to unbox it and fire it up - I think I show it briefly what I had for the colour temp but the reality is it will not work for your projector as every unit is different and especially the screen material is different. They used the same screen as the one I have so it worked out well.
Could you please share the calibration settings? They are pretty shareable for triple laser projectors as the light sources are very consistent. At worst it will give a good starting point and indicate what parameter is the furthest away from optimal.
Unfortunately I boxed the unit up as I have to work on even more projector reviews, but I did show the colourtemp settings in the video - I would need to dig the projector out although it may not help you as every unit is different.
I would like to know if the Visionmaster Pro 2 would be a significant improvement over my Optoma GT1080 Darbee projector in terms of contrast, colors, and level of detail, or would it just be an okay improvement?
So is the picture good just with the added ALR screen by Valerion or is the picture good also on regular white projector screen? I have EliteScreen as a rollout from the ceiling. Would not want to swap that out.
You don't need to swap it. It will work fine with either. The ALR screen is pretty great though. I'm keeping it in place over the 4 other screens I have leaning up against my wall LOL!
Lucky I found this just before committing to the BenQ W4000i! As a newbie to ceiling mounted projectors - is it worth waiting for the Max version just for the lens shift functionality? Or do you think configuration wise tilting the projector/lowering it should suffice for setup?
@BuildMontage I guess I'm planning on putting it on the ceiling somewhat centred to the screen! Do you know where the top of the screen begins relative to the projector?
Thanks for reviewing the screen. That screen just looks bonkers good. But with fresnels screens, you gotta aim the projector below the halfway point. And as you placed the projector in front of your chair, maybe thats not the best spot for it permanently. So mounting above your head might not be best idea woth a fresnel. So placing the PJ on a coffee table infront of your seating chair is the best with this screen?
I don't believe this screen is Fresnel? Unless I missed that I believe it's just standard grey ALR not CLR or Fresnel. I'd imagine we'll probably be getting a separate video on it though.
@sammy10001 physics says it should be exactly the same if the distances and angles are the same. Of course they might not be and of course if you have any ceiling lights on they would no longer get rejected too. But that's more an exercise in "how do I get the angles right for the best result". That said personally I'd rather use this with an AT screen if it still looks good on them. If I wanted Fresnel anyway I'd wait and see if any of this technology makes its way into the AWOL Vision Max.
I'm not sure TBH. It will depend on how strict your grading guidelines are. This is a TRIPLE laser so it requires a very expensive 1nm or less sensor to be used for calibration but you can dial it in very well. For the price of this projector, it could be worth a shot!
Thank you! I have a benq Lk9000 6,000 lumen but isf calibrated with a lumagen i get about 2500 lumen 120" at about 12ft back. Thoughts on the valerion replacing it? I have a black diamond alr 1.2 screen. Whats the absolute brightest projector out there? Id ahve to do construction to do a ceiling mount ust. So would prefer traditional throw.
You could use white or ALR grey. Personally I'm leaning towards ALR like Tony had here. It's already brighter than say a JVC so I'd rather enhance it's contrast than it's brightness. But it's really preference I think.
How does HDR10+ look on amazon prime on the Valerion Pro 2? Is the contrast as good as Dolby Vision on the Pro 2? On my Hisense px3 HDR10+ doesn't look as contrasty and I'm wondering if the problem is with HDR10+ or the hisense Px3?
I think it's good, although Im not a huge fan of HDR10+ tonemapping, I find it hit and miss, I find Dolby Vision is much better, it always seems to be a little brighter. I might run this in front of my MadVR in my main room to test it out and see how it performs with an HDR to SDR tonemapping conversion... Works miracles on my JVC.
I have to work on another video with a tight deadline, AND my main room is almost finished construction, so when I get through this hurdle in a week or so, I will move the Pro2 into my main room to test it out and compare the two - and will give feedback. I am going to be working with JVC very soon for an NZ700 review so that one might be a better comparison!
Absolutely not!! I would redo my room if that was the case. Still heaps of shift allowed. My room tour will be coming on that room as soon as it’s finished.
Yes. It’s already in production and first batch being delivered next month. Also it’s the sister company to AWOL Vision who are a successful UST company.
In your gaming section. The 60FPS image shown of Forza has a ton of red/green/blue offset, like on the grid of the towers it's red, and fringes on the sign, is that visible in person? That looks like a bit like an unwelcome 3D or pixel misalign effect?
@@BuildMontage To me this looks like the classic rainbow effect. Your camera´s shutter speed should not matter. It could introduce blur, but not that color offset.
@@stefanklein1863 Sorry but not its not. It is colour fringing created by the shutterspeed of the camera. It captures the frame mid-render because it's not perfectly in synch. I know because when I can get it 100% perfect you can't see what youre describing. But there is RBE with this projector, but it is different to what you're talking about.
AWOl which is the sister company makes the best UST projectors out there. I have done some reviews and recently got the 3500 in so I need to review that one soon!
@BuildMontage I want to get that but I can't put in the ceiling because I live in an apartment, I might be able to fix it a table or something... what UST projector would you recommend that has the same performance as this Valerian Pro2? Thanks
No it does not but you can customise the different profiles for the different colourspace - not specific lens positions as it doesn't do any except optical zoom.
Minimal to non existent as it doesn't use a colour wheel. The hook up has just recently done a comparison shootout if you want more details. Spoiler.. this won.. by a mile.
It isn't "non-existant" not to disagree with The Hookup, but I definitely experienced some RBE although I am VERY suspetible to it, it is greatly reduced compared to nearly every other single chip DLP I have reviewed so I think I could easily live with this one. I didn't even mention it because it was so minor I forgot to even mention it :) Single chip DLP regardless of colour wheel will still be prone to some RBE.
You got incredibly high white luminosity compared to others that tested it resulting in this contrast ratio. In normal viewing is less than half that. Still better than similarly priced projectors but definitely it’s not worth stated rrp.
This thing is going toe to toe with JVC projectors in all but the very blackest of scenes. It's incredibly cheap for the performance on offer. The hook up also measured the same contrast ratio with EBL using a different test pattern. It turns out the standard test pattern doesn't trigger EBL fully. So standard pattern was around 7000 and alternative which is what you actually get in use measured over 15000. I agree with your comments on the quality difference though. He also had MUCH better colour accuracy using presets. Remember these are engineering samples so it's possible they've improved the OTB from previous feedback prior to sending Tony his review sample.
I'm not sure what you mean. I didn't get a different unit to any other reviewer. What do you mean by "normal viewing" - the high luminosity generally kicks in with EBL turned on otherwise you can control the laser strength where I had non-ebl to around 50%.
I agree with this. I used a number of different patterns to test the dynamic contrast. Also the position of the sensor is critical especially if you're reading off the lens directly, you need to make sure it grabs half of the black area and half of the white area otherwise the contrast. Also the colour accuracy as measured in the calibration reports are done on a VERY close to production unit. My first unit was miles different to this one, so I noticed right away how much better it was on the new unit.
I did my best with the recording, remember that 24p is the standard for movies which does look a little juddery if you don't have frame interpolation turned on.
It's really odd why Valerion doesn't have they're proprietary EBL and black enhancements permanently ON out of the box. From some of theses clips you showed without those being ON most of the images are totally unwatchable.
They might yet. This is an engineering sample. It's possible they're leaving it off on purpose so when reviewers turn it on (knowing they will) they get impressed more by the difference.
EBL is situational as some brighter movies look better without it enabled in my humble opinion. I even showed the Furiosa demo at the start where the EBL on actually have brighter bars top and bottom, but when it went to the dark scenes it came to life. It's a choice. Its great to be able to turn it off an on! Definitely the one feature that has blown Valerion to the top of the list!
thank you for the great coverage. Is there some sort of motion smoothing turned on? The videos seem a little soap opera-ish? Is the projector able to play 24 frames please?
No but my video was filmed at 60p so likely it’s what you’re seeing. Filming a screen is a VERY difficult task as frame rates and shutter speeds are almost impossible to get synchronised so my approach was to film at 60p while the footage was playing at 30p so the frames could evenly divide. I took three days of reshooting to finally work out how to get the best result for the video.
@@BuildMontage Thanks for the explanation. I wonder why this didn't seem the case in your review of the JVC NZ800 footage? That looked allot more like 24FPS? Also, that coverage was Stella work. Just left a tip to say thanks!
@ke5943 thanks I appreciate that 🙏 every projector is different and the JVCs are probably the easiest to film as their chip design means zero RBE or colour fringing, BUT that was also filmed the exact same way and Leo actually had some frame interpolation smoothing enabled :) personally I was happy with how the footage for this video eventually turned out as it was very difficult to film.

Depending on where you need to place it, it could be worth waiting for the max, or ordering both!
@paulc5389 no it's a fresnel. I actually ordered it, and it says so on their kickstarter
@sammy10001 ah fair enough. If you wanted to ceiling mount it you would just turn the screen upside down and you'd still get side light rejection.
@paulc5389 true, but that doesn't work as well in reality.
Nexigo youtube channel has that option, and they show it in action, and it's less bright
Would this be suitable for a grading suite? I'm thinking color and contrast accuracy, calibration, DCP playback and Resolve?
I'm not sure TBH. It will depend on how strict your grading guidelines are. This is a TRIPLE laser so it requires a very expensive 1nm or less sensor to be used for calibration but you can dial it in very well. For the price of this projector, it could be worth a shot!
Nice. As Always great video
I really don't know as I am not familiar with that specific projector you have.
Great review 👌👌
Thank you 🙂
Which screen size and type you use it ? Normal white ?
It’s the Valerion ALR 120” - it’s kinda grey.
Hi, the valerion community would like to have more information about this ALR valerion screen 🙏🏻@@BuildMontage
You could use white or ALR grey. Personally I'm leaning towards ALR like Tony had here. It's already brighter than say a JVC so I'd rather enhance it's contrast than it's brightness. But it's really preference I think.
@paulc5389 - I agree this is loads brighter than my JVC and the ALR screen definitely helps for the ambient light in the room.
It looks better on the pro 2
Amazon Prime has Dolby Vision too. Just in case you weren't aware. You have to pay slightly more for it but it also gets rid of ads doing so.
@@BuildMontage Thank you!
Hi, should I swap my Samsung Premiere (single laser LSP7) for a Valerion VisionMaster Pro 2? Is it worth it? Thanks!
If you have the $$$ then definitely I would as it would be a significant upgrade.
So million dollar question how does it compre to your jvc?
The Hookup just uploaded a comparison on his second channel!
Yeah but no comentary i would like a reviewer opinion @Oscarbruv
I have to work on another video with a tight deadline, AND my main room is almost finished construction, so when I get through this hurdle in a week or so, I will move the Pro2 into my main room to test it out and compare the two - and will give feedback. I am going to be working with JVC very soon for an NZ700 review so that one might be a better comparison!
Hmm curious to know if you use keystone on the JVC, given its mounting height.
Absolutely not!! I would redo my room if that was the case. Still heaps of shift allowed. My room tour will be coming on that room as soon as it’s finished.
YES and it has 3D aswell!!!
Is this jvc killer? 😊

I might do a follow up with my JVC when my main room is finished later this coming week.
It is safe to buy this projector at kickstarter?
Yes
@@jvonengeln no it’s just the refresh rate vs my cameras shutter speed. I did my best to match it but it may have been slightly off.
Any information about the noise level of this projector ? No fan making noise ???
I didn’t include that in the video but I will say it is super quiet for a triple laser
@ thanks - good to know not subjectively annoying
Will it be available in the UK?
Yes
How do you feel about this projector vs some ust projectors?
I just am not a fan of having the projector right in front of seated position. Ya know?
AWOl which is the sister company makes the best UST projectors out there. I have done some reviews and recently got the 3500 in so I need to review that one soon!
is the panel native 4k finally?
No, it's 4 way pixel shift.
is "native" 4K display or Full HD simulating 4K ?
0.47” DMD = 4 way shift. Not native. Still 4K certified image. Just gets there through via shifting 1080p 4 times
@BuildMontage I want to get that but I can't put in the ceiling because I live in an apartment, I might be able to fix it a table or something... what UST projector would you recommend that has the same performance as this Valerian Pro2? Thanks
Any of the AWOL Vision UsT projectors. I’m about to review the 3500 Pro and I’ve reviewed two of their other models as well :)
Can I buy the Valerion pro 2 in the UK or is it an American product only?
It’s world wide
You should be able to buy it in your region but it will ask I believe as well!
dors it come with an EU Plug, when ordering from Europe?
Yes
I believe so - i recieved an Aussie plug with my unit.
Does the projector support wall color adaptation?
No it doesn't. Maybe they might add it later but this iteration doesn't have that.
Just a bummer I have to wait until next summer for the max
It will fly!
What stand are you using?
This one is from Amazon - it's more for camera/lights but I like the solid base it has. Here's the link: amzn.to/3ArzV8v
How long is power cord for this projector ?
Not very long, maybe 1.5m at most.
Does it have settings/picture profile memory and lens position memory?
No it does not but you can customise the different profiles for the different colourspace - not specific lens positions as it doesn't do any except optical zoom.
Wonder if ever a UST will be made
They make UST. They are sister company to AWOL Vision. And I have a new video on a brand new innovation from them verybsoo
Can you share your settings?
I shared my preferences in the video. Actual calibration settings will not help you and likely make the picture worse for you.
As someone who suffers badly from the colourwheel effect, how is this one?
@@BuildMontage he rated it minimal but present. But some people don't even see it at all because.. reasons lol.
How does it compare to your projector?
Which one haha! I have a few.. This is punching above it's weight. I still love my JVC but this thing is NUTS for the price of it.
@BuildMontage so I don't need to replace my NZ9 yet? 😎
That tripod tho!
This thing is crazy how stable you can get it with those legs wide out. I bought it for my heavy light but use it for projectors now to review!
Nice
Will this plug into US receptacles?… the plug that is shown will not work
Yes it's natively a US plug - I have the AU adaptor plugged into it :)
Compared to JMGO N1 Ultra?
Better
@@cordcuttercamThanks! Preordered.
Just bought the nexigo trivision ultra I messed up I should’ve did my research and got this 😑about the same price if you preorder
This projector is pretty crazy. The hype is real.
How wld this compared to Epson 6040
This is way better
take a black screen for perfect alr ....you will need very very high lumens but it will be a perfect picture
Yes a black screen and high lumens means OLED!
Really nasty looking motion on this thing - were lots of these clips captured with motion interpolation engaged?
I did my best with the recording, remember that 24p is the standard for movies which does look a little juddery if you don't have frame interpolation turned on.
Would buy it but I need 3D.
It has 3D - I kinda missed explaining that in the video :/
The only thing more magnificent than this projector is that beard.
Thanks mate!
Real =
Wrong
❤
It's really odd why Valerion doesn't have they're proprietary EBL and black enhancements permanently ON out of the box. From some of theses clips you showed without those being ON most of the images are totally unwatchable.
Maybe some people don't want it on all of the time and plus it looks unwatchable because of the camera , it looks much better in person
Still fake 4K though.
@@DavidSusiloUnscripted I’ve never heard you say this before 😂
1st I got to rob a bank, 2nd I got to rob this from this guy, why rob the bank? To pay the electric bill to run it…
Did you see how small the power adaptor is - I showed it in the video. Only 180w to power it!! CRAZY low... please don't rob me :)
You sound like a used car salesman...
LOL - Maybe I should quit my day job in I.T and start selling cars?
thank you for the great coverage.
@@BuildMontage Thanks for the feedback. Keep up the great work 👍
