- Autism and ABA Therapy in Autism "Autism Severity Levels (DSM 5)" #Autism & #ABATherapy Tips #2021
In Canada, 1 in 66 children are diagnosed with #autism.
When your child get an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis there is an avalanche of information.
The DSM is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. It is where a doctor finds the criteria of all of the disorders and behavioural conditions.
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) released the DSM-5 in 2013. As medical knowledge changes the APA releases updated versions of the DSM.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (DSM5)
Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts.
Restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities.
When your child is diagnosed, you may be told your child's Autism Severity Level.
Autism Severity Levels
Level 1: requiring support
Level 2: requiring substantial support
Level 3: requiring very substantial support
A person can have a different severity level for each of the elements of autism.
For example, a person can be Level 1 in social communication but level 2 in restrictive, repetitive behaviours.
How are autism severity levels used?
Severity levels are used to give clinicians a common language to describe how a learner is impacted by autism.
Can severity levels change over time?
ABSOLUTELY! As children grow and learn their needs will change.
Often, removing one barrier can improve other areas as well.
For instance, improving a child's communication skills can (and usually does) reduce challenging behaviour.
There are many evidence-based interventions that teach children necessary skills. #ABATherapy.
