Nope, indian customs officials are dirty bstrds. They close eyes on smuglers and act strict on innocent people. That "dirty hindu" people will disturb hindu woman foreigners wearing sacred gold "thali" like a gold smuggler while actual gold smugglers are left by closed eye.

This gold smuggling to India have been going on for decades. Another is buying shopping receipt for GST refund at some big shopping mall which is patronized by foreign worker and tourist from one particular country.

In 2006, I was working in Singapore. While traveling to india, I was approached by a person to carry a packet till chennai airport. I am well aware of the consequences of accepting unknown parcels at an airport. I casually enquired about the contents and he showed around 250gm of gold chains neatly packed! He offered me SGD 80 for carrying till chennai. But I refused it immediately sensing unforseen trouble. These are common at Changi airport everyday.

This has been happening since the 1980s and is an open secret. Not just gold but other luggage as well in yesteryears. I am surprised the media has just 'woken up' to this. And fantastic to push all blame to work permit holders. One should ask which legitimate employer will tolerate a work permit holder who engages constantly in these kinds of activities.

Good report and helpful to know. We all need to be aware of suspicious behaviours at high security places like the airport. It matters what foreigners hear about the reputation of Sg having strict laws against money laundering . Much like the disembarkation forms they fill out when they enter, and reading about the law against carrying drugs, I think some action like the posting of notices around the airport could serve to educate and warn passengers from carrying anything for someone else thinking it to be seemingly innocuous.

As long as Singapore gets its bounty, Singapore should mind its own business. The gold has been purchased legally in Singapore and if they can produce an official receipt, Singapore has no moral right to stop anyone carrying gold or any other item as lin as its not stolen. Even in the money laundering case, they waited till the loot got fat as a geese and then then took everything.

      Father's murdering their twin sons.
      Son murdering mama & grandma
Majority of people lowing their mileage from first purchase. To JB being soooo deadly and stealing SG cars. Nothing to do with owner can not afford to make repayments on time. No no lah, it's all the ang mohs fault. Coming here, sending their children to international or paying nearly as much to sand to local schools. They don't understand about the stuggles of obtaining bto or choosing to let maids and day care raise their princes & princesses of the HDB on WhatsApp & wechat videos to 'educate' them.

You all think that it is easy to control a country? Whether it is small or big country, it is still hard to control. You think it is easy and go ahead and work for the government. What do you mean, "The government seem not to care." Do you have the proof? If not because of government actions, Singapore will not be that safe as it is today.
