Further than that.. My 2000 s430 had them.. I believe my 96 e320 mite of had them aswell
I totally agree with you on the gauges, they look cheap, and not even show dual units on the speedometer (mph and kph). I had a test drive on a 2016 Nissan Maxima Platinum, and the dashboard is amazing, the display, gauges, controls, everything. I hope Mercedes look on this and upgrade the dashboard for this excellent car.

I do still not understand why luxury German car manufacturers put the gear knob on the steering wheel. I tested a 2015 E Class and the gear knob got in the way of the gauges.

This choice is the best choice made in the last 10 years to a car. I, as Merc owner cannot understand what Audi, BMW and VW still do, with that bulky gear lever like in a truck, wasting space between the driver and passenger. Their gear levers are big, awful. Very 90s look. Mercedes did a great thing. The car is now way more elegant, there is extra storage, you have still shift paddles on the steering wheel. There is no single point to keep redundant gear shifter in other place than on steering wheel. Cheers from Germany;)

NERD ALERT: it's not a 3.5 liter engine just because it says 350 it's actually just a 3.0 liter engine but the 50 in the 350 just stands for more power for the V6 engine.

Mercedes Benz needs to hire new wheels designers. Those wheels are ugly for being a $50k car. I'm a Merc owner and I gotta say, BMW has the edge on wheels.
D Yang Those are stock wheels. There are AMG 5 spoke rims and a few other premium designs.

There are several nods to respect to the 300 D. I respect that.
People don't give Audi enough credit. He lists BMW 5 Series as this car's "arch rival" and then puts the Audi A6 as the last car on the list of competitors for this car. The A6 is way better than this retirement mobile on 4 wheels.
Audi isn't even in the same universe as BMW and Mercedes.
