Thank you for this video. Going to Cancun in 2.5 weeks, first time flying international and will be solo. This helped me feel more comfortable knowing what I'm doing in the airport. Thank you also for posting the link to the form.
Papaw this is the most helpful video on Cancun's airport. You give some amazing advice and great tips. Thank you for this. I'm taking my first trip to Cancun in May 2023.
Thank you for watching! There have been several changes in the Immigration Hall since I recorded this one. But lucky for you and everyone that watches I am coming through Cancun Airport again in a few weeks. I’ll have an all new updated airport video up maybe by February 5 or 6. Be on the lookout! Jeff (Papaw)
Thank you so much for the video! I'm going to Cancun for the first time in 10 days and it's videos like these are SO helpful to prepare you with what to expect!
Thank you! Some changes have happened since I did this one. You might get the egates, FMM form is no longer required and the taxi rip-off guys are even worse!
Thank you so much this was great!! This will be a first-time trip for me and looking forward to getting through the airport without too much trouble. Great tips!
Such a wonderful video! I’m going for the first time in April. I love watching videos prior to traveling to new places! I love all the information and your accent made it even better lol 😂 God bless!
It’s not too bad for one of the busiest in the world. People arriving are very anxious to get their holiday started they might over emphasize anything that slows them down.
We flew into Porta Vallarta. We watched so many videos saying about the small imagination slip that you HAVE to be given back when they stamp your passport to come in. Started panicking after realising we hadn't been given it. Asked other people from our flight if they had been given theirs. Most either hadn't been asked or had the full form back, they had taken the whole thing from us! Later found out as long as your passport is stamped we didn't need the slip of paper they were supposed to of given back. (This was Vallarta airportin August 2022) Is it still the same in your video for the Cancun side now? Little confused on the Duty Free shop before customs how much cigarettes/ tobacco, alcohol can you buy before you have to declare it at customs? The hotel we stayed in had no where to buy cigarettes, so if we came to Cancun next year would need to go through customs for about 200 cigarettes? Cancun Airport is so different to Porta Vallarta,. Very little to do ir by in the Porta Vallarta one. Love your videos
The FMM form is being phased out across the country. Do your own research to determine what your limits of whatever things you might plan to buy at the Duty Free. But you are not likely to save any money making any purchases there.
@@papawgotagopro - It's much cheaper to take the ADO bus downtown from the airport for a few dollars and then decide your transport from there. However, if you're with a large group, then reserving a van would be more cost-effective.
We love Cancun Airport. It is so relaxing. Except for the timeshare vultures at the beginning. Great advice on the departure boards. They do change often. We have only eaten at Johnny Rockets once. Never again. We like the food at Margaritaville. A little expensive but always good. Bubba Gumps is pretty nice too. The Harley Davidson store keeps getting smaller. Now it is at a kiosk by the bathrooms.
With most services, including AmStar, you can check in with the rep in the first group you see right before I show the bar. They'll point you where to go next. You'll check in with the next rep and they will then check you in and tell you which van to load up on.
We are going on to Playa del Carmen from Cancun and planning to use the ADO bus as their station in Playa is very near where we’re staying. Is the ticket counter for ADO there near the rental car counters after you get luggage and pass through customs? Thanks for the walk thru...always helpful to “see” where you’re going before you get there!
F.Y.I. I always use ado bus to head to Playa del Carmen. Good value for the money. Another company uses smaller bases and pack them in. Ado has an office right before you exit the terminal. On the right hand side. Have a great trip.
I have been there 5 times; last time was not good. Taxi. Tried to overcharge. When you get to your hotel go in and ask for help they will prevent taxi cheating you.
There are definitely some taxi rules for tourists to be aware of. First, never take a taxi from the airport. 2nd, get the official taxi price list - a pic on your phone works best. Finally, agree on the price for all riders and baggage before anyone or anything gets in the cab.
Great video! Thank you for taking the time to make it, I feel a lot less nervous for our honeymoon now😂 I saw you in the comments speaking about pesos and USD. Do you think there’s any issue with ONLY bringing usd for tips/ souvenirs ?
When I come to an all-inclusive resort I bring USD $20 bills and exchange for $5 and $1 bills at the front desk. If I need pesos for taxi or colectivo the front desk can exchange that too. Remember to bring your passport with you to exchange USD for pesos.
Do you possibly know what is required when entering and going through security with Perscription pill medication? For U.S its pretty much nothing besides the container meds come in and the printed script on the bottle. But searching online my head is hurting trying to understand. I'm seeing a Perscription from Dr that must be in spanish? & My dr is a old English guy- Also a possible letter from doctor detailing the medication, dosage ect? I dont want any issues going through security and they say I can't bring in my meds because I miss a certain doc I would need( I take a beta blocker metropolol that i literally need for my Heart rate otherwise it's over 120bpm)
Certainly rely on your own research. I cannot state specifically what the law is nor what would happen every time for someone else. My interpretation - and what we always do - is that prescription medication needs to be in the pill bottle with the original prescription label intact and accurate. I also understand that several medications are disallowed, prescription or no - like opioids and amphetamines.
When are you coming? TSA is in the USA, that won’t help at all in Cancun. So much has changed in the arrival immigration hall since I did this video. I am returning January 29 and will be doing a whole new video highlighting all the changes.

Hi thank you for your video. Iam curious to know concerning length (if you're a tourist)of stay, did you get the amount of days you requested? Do you know if some tourist are getting considerably less days than 180?
In the past year there has been a lot of chatter in social media circles about number of days on the FMM and of Mexico detaining some that overstayed their visa. It is unheard of that a legitimate tourist was given less time than their legitimate tourist purpose request. “Backpackers” (ie,bums) that want open ended stays may have difficulty convincing the immigration officer they are legitimate. Mexico is a real country with immigration laws they have to be (and need to be) enforce. Immigration officers are professionals and have authority to do their jobs. Legitimate tourists have absolutely no need to worry. Illegitimate tourists do need to worry.
Do you have to declare your personal prescribed medications? Also why are they selling big bottles of liquor if we’re only able to take liquids 3oz or less onto the plane?
My understanding is that your lawfully prescribed medications not otherwise excluded by Mexican law are just fine so long as they are in their labeled containers as you received them from your pharmacy. Do your own research to determine whether or not your prescription medications are allowed. Verify with YOUR airline their policies on bringing bottles of Duty Free booze purchases onto the plane and what you might have to do if you have a connecting flight upon arrival back home.

Thanks for a great video. My international flight departs from terminal 2, do you know if there is an immigration office there or if I have to take the shuttle to terminal 3? I have an FMM (I arrived in CDMX where they still use FMM) so I need to get it stamped for taking my flight to europe.
This is an evolving situation and until the process is established I’m afraid there’s many unknowns. I’ve never gone through terminal 2 so I can’t say for certain if there is an INM kiosk there.
Like Glen, I assume you mean the FMM form. You can complete your FMM online. Use only this address and none others (they are rip-offs): www.inm.gob.mx/fmme/publico/en/solicitud.html You complete the form on the website and print it double sided. No way to pre print a blank one. Just have a pen with you on your plane - the flight attendants hand out blank ones for you to fill out.
Thanks for the video. Is there a transit flight hall in that airport? I ll land in cancun but i have a connecting flight to flores guatemala. Do i have to get through inmigration even though i wont get in to mexico? Any info would be helpful
First, it is most important to know which terminal you will land and from which terminal you will then depart from. You will have to clear immigration after landing before going ahead to the next leg.
Flew out of Terminal 4 day after it opened in '17. A superior experience over the old terminal. Used it again in '18. 👏👏👏👏 Hope another trip is coming soon.
I am about to make my first trip[ to Cancun in February 2023, solo. How tight is the airline in carry-on baggage size? I mean if I have a case that is 0.5 size over are they going to say NNOOOO Way!! We are going to charge you for that luggage case.
Yes. Immigration hall immediately after getting off the plane. Then to baggage claim, then to Customs with your bags. It’s possible a Customs Officer may ask you some questions and might pul you aside for a random check.
Every bag is X-rayed before delivery to the luggage carousel. And anyone could be pulled aside at Customs for a random check. Be aware that it is not legal for any foreigner to fly any drone of any size or weight in Mexican. When I fly mine I am technically an outlaw!
I've researched this thoroughly and consulted people in Mexico much smarter than myself. The 250g thing is a common bit of misinformation. For Mexican citizens ONLY - if their drone weighs less than 250 grams then they do not have to register it with the civil aviation authority. There is no path whatsoever for non-citizens to legally fly any drone of any size or weight anywhere in Mexico. I've taken my DJI Mini 2 drone to Mexico twice since getting it. In August upon arrival at Guadalajara Airport I was pulled aside for the deep cavity search. The nice Customs officer pulled everything out and held my drone in her hand with a "tsk-tsk" look on her face and just put it back in my backpack. Like I said, I've been an outlaw when getting that butter smooth awesome drone B-roll footage.
private vehicle in case something happens at pearson airport where my dog might not fit airline requirements can i book transportation at the caccuc airport when i arrive
For some countries, like the USA, correct. This started in October and I added a note in the video description. I’m headed back in January and will do an update.
Thank you for this video! So helpful. I have a question please. I thought U.S citizens can travel to Mexico without a passport. Is that true? We plan a trip to Cancun but our 16 year old does not have a passport. Thank you.
Every US citizen (except babies) has to have a valid passport to travel by air out of the US or back into the US. This started around 2007 or 2008. Your 16 year old has to have a valid passport.
Hello friend, my flight is in a month. I plan to travel with my two boys and my wife. We both have COVID vaccines, Do they need to have the vaccines in Cancun Mexico?
If you’ll be staying at a resort and all you’ll be purchasing is tips, a cab ride or 2 and maybe some tourist keepsakes then don’t bother getting pesos ahead of time. Exchange USD for pesos at your resort’s front desk (take your passport when you do). If you’re staying in a regular hotel or condo my advice is to take pesos with you and use a credit card (NOT debit card) for restaurants & groceries. In 22 years and over 30 trips to the area I’ve never once had my debit card hacked. Because I’ve never used it.
There isn’t anything available when you arrive in Cancun. But when you’re going home, as your transfer van pulls into a parking spot several porters in the blue shirts will gather around. They aren’t pushy and will just wait, some may ask, but mostly they’ll just stand there with their luggage dolly waiting for a cue from a traveler. They all speak enough English and are very polite. Just say hello to one and that yes, you’d like their services. He will get your luggage and take you where you need to go. Inside he’ll take your passport and check you in, print your bag tags and boarding passes. Be certain to tip. With just the one bag I tipped $5. When there’s been 2-3 bags I’ve tipped $8-$10. US dollars or Pesos, either one is fine.
Where did you meet your Amstar driver? It seems like you pass them the first time and a second time?Did you pass them the first time? Thanks and great video! I also booked my ride with them
They are always in the same places. I checked with the first and 2nd ones you saw. Then I met up with their group right before the funky music started driving away. Tell the guy with the clipboard your name & where you're going and he'll mark you down and show you which van to get in. I had to wait about 15 minutes for the van to fill.
Okay I’m going to Cancun in march. I’m from America I never had my passport book stamped first time flying internationally. I’m staying a week For the immigration form. What do I click for point of entry ? It doesn’t have Cancun available
Last month the process changed. You no longer need to do the FMM form if flying into Cancun. So that airport was removed from the drop down menu. The immigration officer will stamp your passport and write something. I’m returning to CUN at the end of January and I’ll do an updated video.
What do you mean by having to declare something? I’ve never been. So if you have nothing to declare then you don’t have to go through customs and just walk out?
An example would be: Mexico limits a family to 200 cigarettes and if a heavy smoker is coming for 2 weeks he needs more. So with an excess he needs to Declare and pay some taxes. But many will ignore this. While “Walking Through” a customs officer could pull anyone aside for a spot check. When the cigs are found the opportunity to pay a small tax is passed and the fine is then very expensive.
I hope anyone going through Cancun airport have better luck than our flight had ,it took 2 and a half hours to get through immigration ,some people were at the desk being asked questions for 10 minutes, god it was so frustrating, once we got through and collected the cases we put them through another scanner then damn me we had our cases opened and inspected at custom check it took 3 hrs from landing to getting out the airport.wonderful service not
This sometimes happens - it has happened to us on 2 occasions in about 20 landings at CUN. But the overwhelming majority of arrivals the total amount of time between touchdown to transfer van rolling is about 1 hour.
Every piece of checked luggage is X-rayed before being put on the turnstile. And anyone could be pulled aside for a random physical examination of all luggage.
I was randomly pulled aside and they went through my luggage and my fiancee's luggage. It was kind of annoying. It would be a lot quicker for them and us patrons if they had a dog sniffing. And that would be cost effective as they had like 5 or 6 airport police doing random checks.
thanks for such nice videos, i am always watching the videos. i am coming to cancun in june. so needed to ask few things ,plus anything you guys want to tell me would be helpful. i am arriving night time, so my plan is take the ado bus to central cancun, and take r1 bus to hotelera zona. but wanted to know does R1 bus runs at night time, mid night ? also there is a 660 mexican peso fees at immigration, is it during arrival or departure. and obviosuly there is no fmm forms now.
Thanks for watching! I just got home from another trip. New videos coming soon! My first suggestion is to consider hiring a transfer service like USA Transfers. Especially at night. I’ve never take the bus service and I’d be worried about getting exactly where I needed to be. Sometimes the lowest cost option becomes the most expensive. Every trip I’ve taken by plane from the US (over 20 so far) the airline charges the tourist visa fee in my ticket price and I don’t have to pay anything else. From where are you flying? Cancun airport has ceased use of the FMM form for travelers from many countries. What is your passport nationality? Jeff (Papaw)
Hello. Whether or not a Customs form is needed depends on which terminal you arrive. A Customs form is not required for Terminal 3 where this was recorded.
@@papawgotagopro we were coming in terminal 4. Flew in yesterday and did not have to do the Immigration Form or a customs form. They just checked our passports, got our luggage and we walked out.
Yes. I had added the update to the video description. This just started at Cancun Airport this week. I experienced it coming into Guadalajara airport last week. Be sure the date that is written on your passport stamp is legible. Jeff (Papaw)
Do you mean immigration? Yes, whatever is your first point is where you go through immigration and customs. There’s a bus that shuttles you to the other terminal, then you go through security again there. Hopefully you allow plenty of time. If you have checked bags you have to collect them at Terminal 3 then recheck at 2.
I only know about rules for the USA. Yes, a passport is required and every airline will verify your passport before you are allowed to board the plane to leave the USA.
Wearing a light blue shirt? No - not a scam. That wasn't a United Airlines employee, it was a Baggage Porter. They are there to help with baggage and with the kiosks and they work on tips. If they offer their services and you accept then you should tip some money.
You were misinformed. To travel by air in or out of the US all US Citizens (except babies with their mothers) must have a valid passport. And to be in Mexico beyond a short distance from the border as well.
Nope. It’s gone. A Customs Agent randomly pick travelers and asks them a few questions. If he/she doesn’t like the answers then a search of bags & belongings takes place.
Now they have worse stuff.. like the agent randomly telling you and stamping in your passport how long you can stay.. no more changing plans and staying longer and it may be very hard to get that 180 days..
Sometimes Cheap Caribbean has the best prices, sometimes not. I think I've used them on 7-8 trips. We are headed back next week and this trip I booked airfare direct from United and my resort, Bahia Principe, direct on their website.
Watch the airport restaurants for ripoffs! My family ate at one and after returning home, we realized that the waiter had added $100 to his tip on my credit card.
I travel to cancun about 4 times a year and I can tell you that some of the most vile human beings I ever met in my life work at the airport. From the officials to the scammers to the taxi drivers.

Every bag is X-rayed before delivery to the luggage carousel. And anyone could be pulled aside at Customs for a random check.
Be aware that it is not legal for any foreigner to fly any drone of any size or weight in Mexican. When I fly mine I am technically an outlaw!
@@papawgotagopro I thought that Drones under 250g are okay?
I recommend against waiting until arriving to find transportation. You are at the mercy of a group not known for kindness or fairness.
Hi! The immigration card is no longer required to Travel back from Cancun right?
For some countries, like the USA, correct. This started in October and I added a note in the video description. I’m headed back in January and will do an update.
going to Cancun tomorrow for 2 weeks so thought id do some recon checking out flying and airport vids
Thanks for watching. It’s good to know what to expect.
Hi, what about covid requirements at the airport? Amd to go back to USA do I need to have a negative covid test?
Testing is no longer required for re-entry back to USA.
@@papawgotagopro Thank You for your response. I appreciate the information.
Hello friend, my flight is in a month. I plan to travel with my two boys and my wife. We both have COVID vaccines, Do they need to have the vaccines in Cancun Mexico?
I’m not aware of any certain requirements for that. Check with your airline to be sure you have what they say.
would you recommend getting pesos or is USD fine?
If you’ll be staying at a resort and all you’ll be purchasing is tips, a cab ride or 2 and maybe some tourist keepsakes then don’t bother getting pesos ahead of time. Exchange USD for pesos at your resort’s front desk (take your passport when you do).
If you’re staying in a regular hotel or condo my advice is to take pesos with you and use a credit card (NOT debit card) for restaurants & groceries.
In 22 years and over 30 trips to the area I’ve never once had my debit card hacked. Because I’ve never used it.
Sometimes the rates are best at the hotel I do recommend getting some pesos at least for emergencies
How do I get a porter service? I booked through Southwest, but I don't have any special needs so it won't let me book their assistance.
@@papawgotagopro This is very helpful. Thank you
Are there are shuttles to Car Rental Places?
The car rental booths are in the hallway just past Customs.
@@papawgotagopro Great! Thank you so much!
If I bring a vape pen how strict are they on it??
I have no clue on that. Sorry.
Do they go through your suitcase? The one that goes under the plane?
Every piece of checked luggage is X-rayed before being put on the turnstile. And anyone could be pulled aside for a random physical examination of all luggage.
No, not in Mexico.
Question on the customs form - how the heck do you fill it out?
Do you go through customs if you arrive at terminal 3 and have a connection flight from terminal 2?
Do you mean immigration? Yes, whatever is your first point is where you go through immigration and customs. There’s a bus that shuttles you to the other terminal, then you go through security again there. Hopefully you allow plenty of time. If you have checked bags you have to collect them at Terminal 3 then recheck at 2.
We are going to Cancun next summer
We are coming back in January. Be on the lookout for an updated video in February.
I hear electronic cigarettes are banned ? Any mention of this in the airport?
Not that I saw at CUN. This topic is thoroughly covered in several threads on the Cancun TripAdvisor forum.
I be here in two weeks thank for sharing
Was this recorded on the 11th? Or was it recorded earlier and posted on the 11th?
Arrival was May 8 and departure was May 12, 2022.
thanks. for the walk thru.
can you tell me anything about the vista tax. The cancun visitors tax.
Was told I don’t need a passport to fly into Mexico. Is that true ?
I only know about rules for the USA. Yes, a passport is required and every airline will verify your passport before you are allowed to board the plane to leave the USA.
Of course the lines ain't that busy you're traveling in June. Tried traveling in December or the winter months
I’ve traveled to CUN at all times of the year. Short lines and long lines alike happen year round.
Sweet! Thanks pawpaw
Couple more weeks we’re heading down
Have you made it down yet?
@@papawgotagopro we will be arriving this Tuesday!
😂 last time I went there in the 90s there was a red light green light security check. They have coke a long way I see.
Yep - the old "Red Light / Green Light Roulette" that i used to lose 90% of the time. It's been gone a few years.
A great airport indeed, for the best beach town in the world!
Thanks
Thanks!
A United airport employee asked me for money after he helped me at a Kiosk.
Lots of scams and lines.
Wearing a light blue shirt?
No - not a scam. That wasn't a United Airlines employee, it was a Baggage Porter. They are there to help with baggage and with the kiosks and they work on tips. If they offer their services and you accept then you should tip some money.
What terminal is this?
Terminal 3
I appeared in the video lol I'm an etransfer worker
I thought you don't need a passport to go there 🤔
You were misinformed. To travel by air in or out of the US all US Citizens (except babies with their mothers) must have a valid passport. And to be in Mexico beyond a short distance from the border as well.
Time share sucks! It will eat your time.. even on hotel lobby they will waste your time on those time share stuff.. just say NO!
I agree, it isn't for me either. But I do have intelligent acquaintances that have them and love them.
Jeff (Papaw)
Me too!!
After Terminal 4 was opened, the only thing I like at Terminal 3 is Bubba Gumps shrimp. Terminal 4 is so much better.
Maybe so. But it which terminal you come through depends on which airline your'e flying.
We had to wait 2h for pasport control after 13h flying! Take ado bus or prebook your shuttle! It is full of scammers!!!!!!
This is why I do these videos, to help prepare first time travelers. Always research a place before traveling.
that's why i fly from Tijuana so that i don't have to go through that
Yeah, but for those of us that live in the eastern half of the USA that makes the trip far too long.
Book a hotel that has airport pick up.Rule No.1
Only a few really swanky expensive ones do that here. Not very common in the area.
No more red light green light? Haha
Nope.
Don talk to anybody! They just want to scam you!!!!
I heard the beach sucks
Not a beach at Cancun Airport that I’m aware of. Can neither confirm nor deny that it sucks.
Cheap caribbean is the way to go!
For over 20 years I’ve avoided credit card ripoffs by employing a simple technique - I never use credit/debit
cards when I’m there.
I travel to cancun about 4 times a year and I can tell you that some of the most vile human beings I ever met in my life work at the airport. From the officials to the scammers to the taxi drivers.
$19 for a burger and onion rings … it’s a scam…
Maybe. But to be fair, EVERYTHING at Cancun Airport is a scam and grossly overpriced.
Heading out there next week , first time so hopefully customs goes fast for us like it did for you
