- Team Scotistani takes you to Murree, a popular tourist town in Pakistan. A beautiful mountain resort that folk flock to in summer to avoid heat and to enjoy snow in winters, Murree is also a favourite spot for people who have keen interest in British era architecture and sites.
Murree was established as a summer 'hill-station' for the British families in order to escape the heat of the Indian plains following the British annexation of the Punjab in 1849 from Sikh rule. Murree became the summer capital of India and remained so until the end of nineteenth century Shimla (now in India) became the summer capital.
One can still find a number of churches and chapels, the most famous being the Holy Trinity Church,16 cemeteries, convents, a Mall, Moto Tunnel and remains of a club and brewery etc apart from the many cantonments and old British settlements built in and around the town. One comes across many British sounding names of streets and houses. The local buildings and structures were built in typical British taste and many have survived the last 100-150 years.
