As a musician, I LOVE how this guy STILL LOVES & APPRECIATES what he does and his good fortune. Just a really great, positive guy.

I can’t believe that one. John’s first song he played drums in public was : “You Can’t Do That”. I never figured that anyone would select the same “real deep cut” as a lifetime first. The Avalanches in the eighth grade talent show. More cow bell !

The man went through hell and back and still has just a positive attitude, I don't think anything can keep him down!! Almost as if the more you kick him the stronger he got..

I enjoyed this interview very much, so thank you.
Since I was born in 1969, I didn't have much exposure to John and his families' work back when I developed my own interest in music, but I caught and enjoyed a song of theirs on Music Choice this afternoon and dove right in via the Googles.
Was blown away at videos displaying his early talent on the drums (along with his great singing) and was also very much intrigued by the larger story around their band.
Also wanted to say that I appreciate what it's like having a dad who, while capable in his own right, can also be a complete bastard at times, and how much I admire John's wisdom for not carrying around too much in the way of resentment.
"I didn't hate him, but I didn't much like him either."
    Nicely put.

Watching this interview again a few months after seeing it the first time, it is still enjoyable to see. John Cowsill doesn't need drums, he does air drumming beautifully! John would be a great one to just sit down with for a chat. Ask him one question, and let him go! It sounds like you would get a dozen different stories from that one question...he's so fun to listen to! Thanks again the second time for a great interview!

In the late 60's, my uncle (who was in the Navy with Bud Cowsill) took his daughter (my cousin), a friend of hers, and myself to the Michigan State Fair to see the Cowsills perform. I was about 9-ish and I was captivated. Our group then followed the family to the Stouffer Hotel in Southfield, MI where "us girls" played with Susan while the "adults" had drinks. I remember I had a program that was signed by everyone but John. As a matter of fact, when Susan knocked on the door where Barry was staying, he came out with a robe wrapped around him (I'm sure I blushed) and I asked him to sign my program which he graciously did. What a great memory!

Cowsills were a truly awesome band. John was like, 14 when they made their final first run album, and the drumming is *seriously* good. Check out IIxII on the Playboy after Dark show

What a classy, upbeat guy. To go through what he and his brothers and sister went through and come out of it so brilliantly and joyously is nothing short of a miracle. He clearly deserves the happiness that is so obviously filling him.

I really like the Cowsills, I recall there music but I was young, just recently because of TH-cam I was reintroduced to them.
Sharon was so cute with her little dancing moves. I really like all of the brothers.
John and Paul are an excellent interview.
I’m sorry they had such a jerk for a father.

A lot of people don't know that Bill Cowsill was offered the position in the Beach Boys in 1971 when he was fired (by his dad) in the Cowsills but I heard Bill declined...

I remember The Cowsills from the beginning, and have seen/read a little over the years, but never knew what is in this video, this is so good, John is so humble and candid, seens like a great guy, my sister dated a guy in Strawberry Alarm Clock back then, so I got exposed at a young age, as a drummer myself, and close in age, I can relate, I even use the same sticks, great video, I could listen to him tell stories all day, much like Ray Manzarek of The Doors, and the fact that he is friends with Bill Mumy, another plus, Bill is a great guy.

These guys were so good that from about age 8-13, I thought they had written their live set: Sunshine of Your Love, Dont Walk Away, Monday Monday. Bob sang with grit and attitude- rare for a guy of his socio economic. Bill was just a flat out visionary. They were the real deal.
