Superior Hammock / Superior Gear System

  • One of the most challenging aspect in hammock camping, is staying warm underneath you. The best method is with an under quilt. If you are warm underneath you. It is rare you would be cold on your top half. But if you do get cold on top. There are easy solutions to remedy that. But if you are cold underneath while on a backpacking trip. There is very little that can be done.
    Now there is a small cottage company in Minnesota called Superior Gear. That has created a hammock where you never have to worry about this problem any more. They have taken a hammock and sewn in a full length under quilt. Where you will never have to attach and adjust your under quilt again. You just set it up ( which is quick and simple ) get in and never have to worry about any gaps that could lead to the Frozen Butt Syndrome.
    It is also versatile and modular that adapts to it's environment, and more important. The different seasons.

    Nice review! I love the fact that you don’t have to worry about putting the under quilt on, adjusting it and adjusting it every time you move around or get back in. And I really like the ability to snap on another under quilt. Very versatile.

      Just buy one piece of gear at a time. Little by little. You don't need all of that expensive gear to enjoy the great outdoors. When I was younger. You should of seen what we where using and the clothes we wore. But I do have to say. When you buy nice gear. It is a good investment if you take care of it and use it for many years. One of my saying is: " if you take care of your gear. It will take care of you".

    Recently got my 30F hammock from Danny, quite happy with it to keep me comfortable and warm, as my other underquilts would often open up and let in cold air, due to my being a cold restless side sleeper.
    If I find the 30F getting a little too cold, I probably attach my Hammock Gear Phoenix 45F to keep my butt extra warm.

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Before you do that. First try migrating the down to your core area. But I have used my Phoenix's over full length under quilts for years now. And they always worked great. As for the under quilts. The Phoenix is my favorite.
      When sleeping in the hammock during the night time. I am always doing the crappie flop.

    Hello!....I've been watching your videos, and Shug's, and others, and did a LOT of research about hammock camping before I bought my first "real" one. Always been a camper/backpacker/canoer - in a tent. Making the switch now that I'm 56. I'm here to say THANK YOU🙏 for your videos, and that I love watching them.
    Guess what? I'm so darn excited! I just got my Superior Gear 30F on Friday (today is Monday). I hung it in my friend's backyard for the first time today, and we all lied in it. I'm in Winnipeg, MB Canada. It was -3 C (26.6F) when we all tested it out for a short while today. Lying in it with no TQ, it was warm. It got warmer the longer you lied in it. My friends commented that they could feel the warmth under them (even without a TQ, we were cozy).
    And also guess what? I'm going camping Wednesday, because its going to be 0 C overnight (34F), so its PERFECT to test this temperature rating. I'm taking my -7 down filled North Face sleeping bag for a TQ. I'm SO DARN excited!
    Sorry to leave a novel here Mr. Marine....just wanted to share my happiness and thank you🙏 for your videos. The wilderness has always been my church, and where I feel closest to the blessings of God.
    If you're interested, I will let you know how my first night went in the temperature rating, also - please let me know what YOU think about what degree TQ I would need....please let me know your opinions. I mean, I'm sure I could possibly take a lesser TQ with me, but this is what I have. Its so great that Danny has incorporated the snaps for making this super comfortable hammock modular. Wowsa. I'm so ridiculously excited. My friends told me I should quit my job and start selling Superior Gear hammocks - and I haven't even slept in it yet!
    If you've read this far, thank you. God's blessings.... Marlene from Canada (Em)

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      First of all. Thank you Marlene for taking the time to write this. It really means a lot. Danny is really generous with the down inside. And remember. If you are going below 0°c. You can always migrate the down to give you extra warmth. The next thing to look at is the multi comforter. You can use that combo for most of the three seasons. Than when winter comes. You snap it underneath you and use your sleeping bag as a top quilt. With a extra blanket on top. Now you are able to get down to -20°c. A year round hammock. Then later on. You invest in a cocoon. Now you have the best year round hammock. You wouldn't believe how many hammocks that I have tested. And that is the best! Thank you so much for watching. And keep me posted on trip. How it worked for you.

The 10' Classic 0F Elite I have been working hard to tune for expedition, but my feet slide off & I think the hoods will help hold up the material a bit on this newer 30F on the way--and tge extra foot won't hurt.
    In reallity the older Classic 10' needs a knotty mod or tarp clip or hood stitiching up top the ends if I were handy.

I love my Chameleon and can stay mostly warm down to -8 Celcius by using a pad, a 4' by 6' Refletex piece I cut and a crappy sleeping bag as a topquilt. I am 6' 2" , my Chameleon is the 11' , double layer, wide version...super comfy, except in winter. I wish Superior mad a wide version for us tall guys and there are many taller than me. I would like to add the Cocoon system, but I guess it needs a zippered hammock to work? But, as a user of the Speer Pea Pod for many years, I can see that this system has some of the same unbeatable advantages. If I have to, I will sell my 1st gem SG insulated hammock in order to buy a hammock that will work with the Cocoon.

Except, I will add the cocoon ( which you can get latter ) because of the extreme temperatures that I will be camping in. If possible, use a sled or pulk. Otherwise I would hang it on the outside of the pack. Strapped underneath. It is bulky. But well worth it. A bigger problem that you are going to have. Is you will never want to get out of it. Hopefully I will see you at the 2024 Wisconsin Frozen Butt Hang. Thank you @LostBeagle for watching. Much appreciated!

    Great review!
    Thanks so much for all the wisdom you’ve shared over the years.
    I have a question about the temp rating. I’m torn between the 45F and 30F hammock. I’m leaning towards the 30F rating, but worry about being too hot when the outside air temp is between 50-70F.
    What is your experience using the SG hammock in warmer air temperatures??
    Thank you sir 🙏

      Good question! There are a lot of variables. Are you a hot sleeper ( like I am ) or a cold sleeper. What is the lowest temperatures that you would be using it. And also the warmest that would be, not during the day. But night time. I took a nap in the 30° Superior Hammock ( which I have taken down in the 20's ( -3c ) and was warm ) with the temperatures around 75° ( 22c ). I was a little warm underneath but not hot. I would say I was quite comfortable. And because heat rises. I took my top quilt and hung it on the suspension. And slept with nothing covering me on top to trap the rising heat.
      It would be nice to have a Superior Hammock that can be used all four seasons. But where I live the 30° makes a great 3-season hammock. And because I have winter top quilts. I now can use that comforter as an extra under quilt and now use it as a winter hammock. I hope this helps. If you have more questions. Please ask.

    Great review as always Marine!
    I was curious about your experience with the diagonal lie while using the full bug net?
    Being 6'5 I have had a great experience with the 12ft version as long as I'm not using the bug net.

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just got done using the 12ft. Starlite. I notice when I adjusted the hammock for a deeper sag. The bug net was too tight ( too small )and I had a hard time zipping the door. The bug net was too narrow. I am texting him as I am writing this. I believe there is a solution to this problem. The bug net needs to be wider with the pullouts moved up to the side next to the face. And on the other side. Moved down to the feet. This way if it is too wide and hang down in the face. The pullouts will keep it away nicely. A asymmetrical bug net option I believe will come. They are a small cottage company that is trying to survive in this tough economy. Thank you Helge Bjonge for watching. I always appreciate it.

      @@AdventureswiththeMarine I saw where the pullouts are attached, and they look like they interfere with exiting and entering the hammock. moving them off the center point of the hammock would definitely help that along with fixing the bug next to be an asymmetrical design. Dutch Gear's Chameleon hammock has an option for the bug net to be asymmetrical.
      I've got a Dutch Gear 11ft wide netless hammock which I got on sale, but its a pain to setup and use with the underquilt and bug net being separate pieces. The superior gear hammock is looking like a really good upgrade. Does the integrated underquilt end up being overly warm in warmer weather? Say 70 degree nights.
      I typically go hiking/camping in early fall when the weather can range from warm to cool.

    And now I have this and that cocoon option is not good I can go inside it's not at least comfortable because is to small. I am 88 kilos and my high is 183 cm in high is fine but my shoulder is no going with cocoon not well

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the problem with the cocoon system is that the hammock is on the narrow side. So tucking the under quilt with the the cocoon over the shoulder is almost imposable for me. The solution I believe is to have the zipper go all the up to the top. That is what a cocoon or pod system is suppose to do. With the cocoon zipped over my shoulder. Now I can tuck the under quilt inside over my shoulder. Without the cocoon always falling off the side of the hammock. I am also 183 cm in height. And weight is 100 kilos. I find myself very comfortable in the 11ft. Superior Hammock. Do you have an 11 ft. of the 10ft. If you have the 10ft. hammock. It is too small in length for your height. Though, some do find the 10ft. comfortable at our height. Thank you Lupus Diem for watching. I really appreciate it.

    How is your lay when it's zipped up? It doesn't look flat from here. Can you a have a horizontal flat sleep?

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This in a narrow hammock. But you can get a flat lie in it. Even with the bug net. And it is comfortable hammock. But this would not be a summer hammock for me. Too hot. Thank you Peacherman for watching. I really appreciate it.

      Wider is more comfortable for me. But a narrow hammock is better in the winter. When the is freezing temperatures during the night. That down goodness is wrapped tightly against you. Snug as a bug! thank you Benoitanctil1 for watching. I really appreciate it.
