  • A rare ice storm this time of year in eastern North Dakota has caused significant tree damage and knocked power out for over 5,000 people. In Oriska, ND, I measured 1 1/4" of ice on several downed branches. The I-94 Oriska rest area took an extreme hit as seen in this video.
    Shot Description
0:00 - Walking along the sidewalk of the Oriska, ND rest area
0:22 - Tree down on a vehicle in the city of Oriska
0:37 - Aerial and ground shots of ice covered trees
1:43 - Power lines coated with ice in Tower City where power was out all morning throughout the city
1:53 - Ice covered railroad warning unable to lift due to the ice in Oriska
2:07 - Drone shots above the rest area and broken trees lining I-94
2:40 - Heavy ice and struggling railroad equipment

Nightmares in winter always start with ICE. Prayers for all those affected. That care of each other...no one else will.

If the crossing lights are flashing, it may not be the gates held down by weight of the ice on em. Ice may have cause a short circuit in the crossing or the rails leading to it, causing the crossing gates and lights to activate.

Anytime there is a fault in a railway crossing guard it goes into a fail safe mode, the arms go down and the lights flash. The way that arm was "jumping" makes me think it was trying to work (go back up) but it couldn't because of the weight of the ice. They use a 12vdc motor which is geared down a lot, so it has a lot of torque to drive the crossing guards (arms). Interesting fault mode there.

Oak trees are very susceptible to ice breakage. They are lucky all the leaves were down. Some areas have oaks that still have some (10%) of their leaves which would be more locations for ice to form in the treetops snapping them.

1:52 neat to see a crossing that still has incandescent bulbs in the banners! I suspect that if Safetran was still in Minnesota this sorta stuff would probably not happen. Sadly they left at the beginning of the century for Kentucky.

Looking for a nice place to spend the winter. Let's see what we can find. Barnes County North Dakota? Sounds like a nice place to live. No hurricanes or volcanoes to worry about. Maybe I'll check it out around Christmas time...oops!

Yikes! Ice like that will absolutely mess up a power grid for weeks.

Barnes County was hit really bad, but so were nearby counties. Out in both Dickey and LaMoure Counties power was off for almost 2 weeks it was the worst ice-storm to hit SC North Dakota in over 30 years.

I remember in the early 70s when I was in elementary school in Morris County, NJ, one winter there was an ice storm like that. One particular road had white birches along both sides of it. The trees were all bent over into the road, so the road was completely blocked. Of course the kids on the bus were telling the driver "Drive through it! Drive through it!" Of course she didn't, but turned around and found an alternate route. Edit: I was one of the kids who did not say that.

It's cool but totally destructive. We lost most of the trees in our city (Sioux Falls) due to an ice storm in April of 2014.

To have snow and ice it has to be cold. This is what you evidently fail to understand. Cope.
