So ... are you people OK with me adding into these videos short tidbits about like some effects were done, or even brief showings of commercially available models of ships included in the episode?

In some of the Syndication Cuts off this episode there is a short of Spock leaning against the opposite wall outside of Kirk's cabin as Eve exits. He has mischievous smile (as one ST commentator put it "Like an Elf with Hypothyroid"). I remember this scene from TV broadcasts, but never in a Video package.

Ooo, I'm looking forward to the next one! I swear, that's a cocker spaniel they put in a dinosaur outfit, lol. Poor dog. Enemy Within was a good one. They really let Shat ham it up, lol! No, they haven't announced the start date for S.3 yet, as they're still filming. We probably won't see it till August or September. But yeah, everybody I've talked to wants to see Shat on The Orville. They could definitely afford him, and I'm pretty sure I've heard Shat say how disgusted he is w/STD. Am I the only one who prefers the original effects? They were state of the art for the late 1960s and still look great today. The CGI "improvements" are state of the art for 2007 and have really started to show their age to the point that they look like something you would see in a video game. The problem is the lighting on the CGI models which is soft, flat, and even, giving them an artificial appearance. Look at 1:04 in the video. The left looks like the Enterprise in space. The right looks like an image of the Enterprise pasted onto a star field background. The practical model also has blinking lights which gives it life and are curiously missing from the CGI version. The other problem with the CGI effects, at least in the opening scene here, is that they add a continuity problem with Spock being unable to identify the type of ship Mudd is flying despite it being clearly visible on the view screen.

The original TOS SFX weren't "state of the art." (The SFX in "Forbidden Planet" in 1956 were state of the art.) The TOS SFX effects were the best they could do with a limited TV budget.

Agreed...really no need for the updating...always wondered why Kirk and Mudd needed to leave miners residence and go out into the storm to beam up at the end of episode....this gave the impression that they were going to walk back to the ship thru the terrible ion storm...

It always bugged me that for a ship full of smart people, they couldn't figure out if they stop well short of the planet, they could've used a shuttle craft and saved power on the Enterprise for life support.
And just like that, I'm smarter than 🖖 😂

Star Trek was low budget at the time. That's why Mudd's ship was represented by a color blob.
