This is the same way that a lot of Corman's movies were made lol, Francis Ford Coppola's debut feature Dementia 13 was made basically using the leftover sets and crew from a movie Corman was shooting in, if I remember right, Ireland

I find it interesting that this movie, the stage musical and the 1987 version all have very different endings. I dread that this will get a modern re-imagining at some point with a CGI plant that looks less realistic than this one.
I saw this when it came out. Later I saw the musical stage play in the East Village, and the movie musical. My favorite was the musical on stage. At the end, the plant not only ate the entire cast, but leafy tentacles fell from the ceiling. It was trying to eat the audience!

Maybe it's just me but this version of Mr. Mushnik is my favorite character in the entire movie. I personally think he's much better than the one in the remake though to be fair that one also has a little charm to him as well. But come on, the original Mushnik is just hilarious!

This movie has its charm, but I don’t understand how some people have said this is significantly “better” than the musical adaptation. Granted, this has some funny moments exclusive to it and I like the idea of Mr Mushnik knowing about Seymour without telling him for a while. But overall the musical feels like it refined the ideas here into something more cohesive and stylistic. Seymour has way more agency in the musical, openly choosing to kill people rather than just starting out accidentally offing folks. And Audrey’s a lot stronger and more memorable as a character. It’s a good movie, especially for 1960, but I can’t fathom how many people in the comments have said it’s “waaaay better than the musical.”
I don't get it. The 86 version has some of the most amazing puppetry of all time. The voice fits the plant better. The acting is better. How anyone can really honestly believe that the 60s version is 1000 times better than the 86 version is beyond me. The plant in this one sounds like it has a smokers lung and never does anything. It occasionally slightly closes its mouth.. Its just people that like to live in this "all originals are better" even though that's not the case here. The 86 version does so many things better. They couldn't move Audrey II fast enough so they had to change speeds for the movie....so Mean Green Mother From Outer space was actually filmed in slow motion. Rick Moranis and other actors would have to act in slow motion when doing scenes with the plant that were fast paced. That's dedication and the 60s version can't match it.
I think it's a matter of boomers wearing nostalgia glasses. This 1960 film is a fun little curiosity and I understand it's value as a cult classic but it didn't stick with me. Aside from the increased production value, I actually cared about the characters in the 1986 film. The actors made me feel things and it boldly embraced black comedy AND a surprising amount of emotion. That's also why the original ending is so creepy, these characters you cared about are killed and the Audrey II manages to take over the entire world. This is all accomplished with comic touch but still, it's something that you feel. For me, this is absolutely no contest. The musical IS the superior film.

Every late Friday night lot of old 1950's and 60's sci-fi would come on..I think the channel station was call ' Friday Fright Night ', something like that. ..Most of it were the ' B's ' types...Boy, as a kid, it was such a treat, especially when you see it for the very first time...Those days were the best...Thank you for sharing..

Dick Miller, who plays Fouch, the guy who eats carnations and Jackie Joseph, who plays Audrey, appear together again 24 years later as a married couple in Gremlins. They were the Futtermans. The gremlins drove a tractor through their house. Then they reprised their roles as the Futtermans in Gremlins 2: The new batch... Dick Miller is also best known as the gun dealer in The Terminator who is killed by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Jackie Joseph was known for playing Earnest T Bass’s love interest, Ramona, on The Andy Griffith Show and numerous voice-over work including the voice of Melody in the 1970s animated cartoon, Josie And The Pussycats...

It's a pretty good film really, that's to say I've seen plenty worse and certainly slower films of this era. I think Jonathan 'Seymour' Haze is perhaps trying a little too hard to emulate Jerry Lewis, and there's a slightly painful excess of overacting in the film as a whole. But I applaud the attempt and would recommend it to anyone who likes 50's and 60's films, I doubt they are too picky! 43:35 hmmm I know it's a farcical film (as evidenced by his reply!), but it really is strange of her to ask this of him, I just can't imagine someone ever asking a grieving parent if they think it's terrible what happened to their son! We saw this so many times when it was shown on television in the early sixties that we were able to memorize almost the entire dialogue of it. It was a staple of a Friday night local fright show that ran B horror and sci-fi "drive-in" films from the fifties and sixties (I think they ran it at least every six weeks). We did not get some of the more subtle humor at that time because of our age, but as we grew older we finally got to appreciate how LOL the entire script was. Our parents and other adults didn't get it of course, but we didn't care. I doubt if many of the current generation would get it either and to me that's very sad. My brother and I frequently quote lines from it in various situations in life that seem applicable to us. For example, we'll answer the phone and say "Flowers as fresh Is the springtime Mushnicks, hello!" or if someone asks for money we say "What am I a philatelist?"...or if on the phone and someone asks if we are calling so and so we'll say, "NO. I am calling John D. Rockeffeler for to make a loan on my ROLLS ROYCE!"..or someone will asks us our name and we'll say.."My name is Fink. Sergeant Joe Fink. I'm a Fink." The script is a bottomless mine of satirical lines to use. The characters are either over the top like Mushnick, looney-tunes like Dr. Farb, Wilbur Force and Mrs. Crelboing or serious ones (as in Zucker Brothers serious) like the detectives or Fouch. Honestly, I really do feel sorry for anyone who does not get the humor of this film - it would have fit in perfectly as a skit on Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows. As for people who try to compare this to the musical version - stop it. They are two totally different films! Each one is great on it's own merits. The first is basically an extended dark comedy sitcom episode and the other really just the stage musical put on film. If you prefer one to the other - that's fine, just don't compare. Well, I have to get home now. My wife's making gardenias for dinner...

This movie rules so hard. It’s so damn funny to me. Maybe I’m nostalgic because it’s one of the first VHS tapes I ever owned…..but no, this movie just rules.
Much better than the musical. It had better atmosphere and characters where as the musical is too morbid. The progression and pacing also felt natural with the story feeling more firmly footed. And without spoiling anything, I'm glad the ending happened the way it deserved to.
I love the random narrator around the 28 minute mark. Theres some good joke sin here that would land with higher budget. This movie isn't that bad, could just use a little polish.

Much better than the musical. It had better atmosphere and characters where as the musical is too morbid. The progression and pacing also felt natural with the story feeling more firmly footed. And without spoiling anything, I'm glad the ending happened the way it deserved to.

No idea why they try to remake movies as musicals. Musicals suck! The non-musical version will always be better.

I love the random narrator around the 28 minute mark. Theres some good joke sin here that would land with higher budget. This movie isn't that bad, could just use a little polish.
