I've been photographing them for 25 years. The reason they run from the waves is Not from a fear of drowning or getting wet. They know that a large wave will flip them over and interrupt their hunt for the arthropods tossed up by the ocean. In a completely calm sea, they will wade in the water.

I saw many over here on the east coast a couple of weeks ago at Sandy Hook, New Jersey just below Manhattan, New York scurrying around North Beach at the tip.

:) Crustaceans they eat hide in the sand right under the surf line. When wave goes out, they run in and grab all they can find. Then escape the next wave.
