The Ocean Sunfish or Mola is the biggest and one of the most weird bony fish in the Pacific as well as in the Mediterranean Sea, normally living in the unreachable deep sea. In Florida we meet the massive but gentle Manatees, and see how they live, and how they are endangered.

About 10 years ago Ute Margreff got to know the female solitary dolphin Mara -- it was the start of an unusual friendship. In the Pacific Northwest, Florian Graner found his private paradise close to Seattle, where he dives into a world inhabited by sea lions, giant octopuses and orca whales.

WOW!!! That bit when a baby whale was born was so beautiful, how they all came together to protect the new mother as she gave birth and then chase away the cameraman as they also dealt with a new baby. I know we are not supposed to endow animals with human characteristics but wow how can we not when we see that? That was one of the most awe-inspiring bits of film I have seen in years. Thank you for such work, that was amazing.

In this video the baby was shown what community looks like, to avoid interesting but potentially dangerous distractions in it's environment, how to successfully defend the pod and those pod members who are particularly vulnerable, to name a few.
High school used to make an annual trip to Crystal River to swim with manatees..if you were making a good grade in the Marine biology class. I was fortunate enough to get a chance to do it. I actually have a photo of myself with Bob (the marine biologist shown in this documentary)...it was 1977. I almost fell over when I saw him in this film!! Fond memories. Manatees are the gentle giants they appear to be and I hope they can survive and thrive.
They're so based that even alligatorts won't hurt them.

I have dolphins on my wall made out of yellow wood from the Cape. I look at them with love as my husband carved them when we lived in Knysna in the Cape. He has since passed on. Dolphins are the most beautiful of animals and very friendly. RIP.

I was lucky enough to swim with a family of mantee, they were so curious and swimming in and out of my legs, having a baby manatee swim between my legs was probably one of my happiest days on this planet and an experience I will never forget! Couldn’t get over how friendly and curious they were sort of like water labradors!

I used to see schools of manatees swin bye in the canal i lived by in Miami Beach Florida. We called them seacows. They are peaceful. We must protect them all, no matter how much it costs. Thank you for this beautiful documentary. Absolutely top notch!

I remember manatees in a canal in Coral Gables early '60s. One of them came to a neighbor's dock and waited to be rubbed with a push broom! It was like a pet, a giant water dog to swim with. I'm 70 and that's one of my favorite memories. Sea cows are very cool 😂

Manatees are so playful where I grew up in FL (Pasco County, I love just a county over in Tampa so continue to go there ) .
They will come up as you clean your boats and play in the water if you spray the hose in their direction from the docks. They also sniff and wiggly their whiskers around . It’s sad cause people probably feed them at the sandbar so they now follow boats even more . Which ends up causing more injuries.
Weeki Wachee springs and Crystal River ,Florida , areas there are places you can swim with them too . Such magnificent creatures.

Baby seals are so cute. I had a close encounter with one when I volunteered at the Zoo here in Knoxville Tennessee. Her name was Cassie and she was lying right in front of me. She had come in from the enclosure.

Great video, this is some of the best and most faschinating i have seen on TH-cam. I had planned to go to bed early but had to stay up and watch it to the end. Thank you for this! By the way, i was once in Florida on vacation and went snorkling on the John Pennekamp State Coral Reef in the Gulf Stream. On the way back to the harbor a group of dolphins followed the boat and gave us a great show with jumps. They seem to do this naturally in different parts of the world.

20:30 must be the most amazing feeling ever and I've experienced a lot of things in life, but that is something I can't even imagine what it would be like around those whales.
I swam with dolphins in the open ocean and that was truly magical, whales I feel would be something so amazing because of their immense size and gentle disposition.

I used to fish the surf in Costa Rica, and some days the fish would bite and some days they wouldn't. The fish were always there. What does a fish have going on in his life that he feels, "I don't feel like biting today. Maybe tomorrow. I'll see how it goes."

@@lisaenglert3202 I grew up in a small village in Oxfordhshire , UK. I shot pigeons, rabbits and every thing else, because the farmers asked me to. I caught trout in the local stream and ate them. I caught every type of sea fish from Poole Harbour. I ate everything I caught or shot, except the crows and magpies. I cooked a mean rabbit and pigeon pie! That is a very kind offer, but I don't want to eat your fish. I couldn't find a recipe.
The scenery can't get any more beautiful than that. Just being on the water has such a tranquil feeling and I could only pray that someday I will be able to see the ocean again

I have never been to see or play in the ocean. And I am so amazed at what lives down there... Beautiful filming..i am so thankful to the many scientists that trsck snd protect these beautiful animals... Thomas caught something's never seen on gilm for the world to see.. yes the sperm moms were annoyed with him but went back to their business. Ibe seen more harm done by boats and others trying to touch them.
I adore this video! What a wonderful documentary! I love the pictures and I love the way the filmmaker is so respectful to the animals, being so careful not to disturb them too much. Got kind of close to those whales, but what an amazing thing to see, a baby whale being born! The group is there to support the mother. I always knew that whales were very social animals and that they form close pods, this proves it.

Mr Thomas, My name is Mark Johnson, I am an avid follower of your documentaries as well as other ocean mammal science biologies and ographers. I recently watched a documentary about different species of whale. In one part of this documentary one of the whales was making almost the exact same sound as that seal you filmed when you were in the Mediterranean with those two different biologists, this "new puzzle" this film is titled titans of the deep filmed by a french film maker Francois something , perhaps you can look into it.

The transient Orca's hunting down and killing the Grey Whale and her calf was shocking as was the Octopus who took care of her soon to be for 6 months without food only to die of starvation! The world is so much bigger and mysterious than one would ever imagine!

I got attacked by a Kijang when I lived in Jakarta exploring a neighbours yard. That’s like a south East Asian moose. Didn’t know it existed until it was cornering me. Big animal. Scary when you don’t expect to jump the fence of a zoo. It was guarding a sports car

I am always amazed at how many Europeans can speak English, and how few Americans can speak the European languages.
Considering we Americans don't live next door to multiple languages and countries that we can freely travel to it makes sense. Yes Spanish is almost the second language of the U.S. but, it is not mandatory for students to learn it. Just like German, French, Latin, Japanese, Mandarin/Cantonese. It's completely optional. And most don't try learning another language until they are out of school.
Strangely enough, the ocean, is exactly where I would expect to find a whale and a sea lion...
Right?!? And, Manatee in the river. Makes sense to me, too.
Yeah, if he said, "traveling into the depths of the amazon, you'll find creatures you might not expect," and then showed a sea lion, and a whale, I'd say, "unno what? He's right. I did not expect that." But, in this case... Ocean creatures in the ocean, makes sense
Kinda like when i saw a news thing, several years back, about there supposedly being a whole bunch of actual Whales that were stranded in the Everglades...along with some Dolphins. Pretty weird... Although, really, anything IS possible; God really DOES preserve His Creation AND makes all things new again, with LOVE for us all. Parts of this, though, felt a little weird to me...like, maybe they were actually at the Aquarium for certain parts... I am very thankful that I do not have to figure it out. That is not my job. I am ALSO thankful that I KNOW, from experience, that there IS more on this planet to go see and to enjoy, share and experience than just simply one county, one state, or even one country. You know, I have absolutely experienced Manatee in the ocean; the first time I encountered one on an actual total saltwater beach, I was afraid for it, kinda...but, it was fine! In fact, it is still here, grown and doing wonderfully IN THE WILD, under only God's control, as it should be.
It'd REALLY be something, though, to walk outside and see them actually swimming in the air...freakout city, potentially.
Yeah, knowing it's God's work is good enough. But God's work is interesting. The everglades were created and are maintained by the crocodiles, which gave a home to most manatees. Evolution either is a conscious being, or a creator, God, did it with extreme care. Random events out of nothing, seems a bit more ridiculous, but hey! It's good I know. You and me just gotta let everyone else know, without turning it into a fight, or debate, but just in love.
Amazing i hope this wonderful animal be common all over our seas . there are some rumors that its starting to be seen in the saronic gulf near athens . i myself saw adead monk seal body in saronida near athens 2 weeks ago . which may proof there are in the area. in few . sadly to many speed boat and fishing may be killing them like the one i saw dead.

Pilot whales do go between the Mediterranean and Atlantic. I remember seeing them while both entering and exiting through the straits of Gibraltar.

Would it be possible to extend the caves internally with a ramp that will allow the seals to get further from the water? I realize that it is more human interference. However, it's humans that drove them to the caves in the first place. But if the caves extended further back at a 30 degree slope with an artificial and braced area (like a mineshaft), the population of seals might be less vulnerable.
That is a great idea and it will bring them back from ever being instinct too they would be able to breed more freely and be safe with their babies if the caves were deeper ravines but no one controls the oceans only mother nature i bet the babies that died being thrashed into the rock nt a chance to survive the harsh tied and the smacking waves

@@_chimera_ if the visits are seasonal such as during birth season, it's possible the caves are accessible at other times without disturbing them. It could be possible to prefab the pieces and then haul them in for assembly over a short period of time.
That being said, they may not go in there if they sense too much change has happened.
It's a good idea but probably better to help them return to where they used to be
The fact that our creator made man to love him and care for and watch over all the earth and the creatures on it means we are not interfering when we do good things for THEM. We interfere when the reason we do things is for us. Like taking their beaches. We absolutely should have natural hospitals and give medical care to injured wild animals instead of this whole "let nature take its course" mentality. We should not interfere with hunting, but aside from that, we should most definitely clean up earth and care for the creatures of it. The major change we as a whole species would see if we actually cared for the earth, its creatures, and eachother would be so drastic, so emense, so brilliantly positive, that it would usher in an entirely new age of humanity, a new age of peace and well being. Far too many simply don't care. Thats not just sad but disastrous...
I had the priviledge of studying the Orcas J and K pods here off Victoria BC for Fisheries and Oceans conservation for 35 years myself and am now retired. I love Orcas and always have, they're awe inspiring in so many ways. Before I retired we had come to the realization that the 2 pods had gotten to the point of no longer having enough viable sexually active females among them to calf and continue their resident permanent Orca population to grow and instead it's now inevitable both pods will go extinct very soon, with two calves being lost to those pods also in the last couple years took away any hope that might be reversed. It's so sad these are the last generations of J and K Pods we'll ever see

A wonderful introduction to rare marine life of the Mediterranean Sea. Fantastic cinematography. The crash in the fisheries is also discussed. I did cringe when the narrator called Loggerhead Turtles 'amphibians' which of course they are not.

Wonderful, fascinating and very intersting, Some of the names of animals and plants could be pronounced more correctly though. I am not a native speaker of English but I do try to pronounce words in the right way. spelling is another problem, so sorry if there were mistakes, but I think its very important for names and other scientific terms to be pronounced correctly.
