    I borrowed a mates Kelpie on a muster at a 2.4million acre sheep station in Central Australia. Teak is 12 years old and smarter than me. She herded 3,000 sheep from the yards in a single day. I was exhausted, she wasn't

      Sounds like every Kelpie I've ever met. Sure, some of them have owners who _are_ smarter but I swear some of them have humans who are so dumb they haven't even figured out their dog is smarter than they are.

    This dog's enthusiasm for life seems to be the essence of the Kelpie. I have a found dog that I originally thought was a German Shepherd puppy. She most certainly is a Kelpie, and my research has brought me to fall in love with the breed. No, I would never have chosen such a demanding dog, but I have to admire her spirit and loyalty. What a great dog!

    You can tell he really enjoys that. Its good that you are giving your dog lots of exercise, thats what kelpies need. For anyone thinking about buying a kelpie, yes they are a hardy dog but please you need to know that you MUST give it exercise and lots of it everyday. And I mean EVERYDAY. Not just a walk around the block, but a good hours walk preferably with a run a park.

    It may not look like one, but it chews like one. It talks like one, and it runs like one - although for a Kelpie thats just off idle. He is going to go for real ride when that Kelpi spots somthing to chase, cat, squirle, basicly anything that moves.

    I have a rescue kelpie, and she's at my grandparents farm while I go to college, but this reminds me sooo much of her. Tear up her toys, the vocal nature, as the love to run. She would pull me on my bike, and I would have to go at least 5 miles to wear her out! As for the idiots saying your dog isn't a kelpie, kelpies are a very hybridized bred, and vary physically.

    Love this! Thank you. We have a Kelpie we rescued 4 years ago with her 7 puppies. She is so much fun! She barks like crazy at the mere thought of a walk and as soon as we hit the pavement she lets everyone and everything know she is out and about! We just moved to Arizona from California. Have you looked into herding in your area? We had intended to take Abby before we moved. Google it if you like. They offer instinct testing and they will teach you how to work sheep with him for a small fee if you like. We have several here trainers here in Arizona and Abby loves it. Auzzie is beautiful. thanks for sharing :-)

Now, she herds our 3 Golden Retrievers lol But I think I remember seeing a facility that will do instinct test and herding training up near Flagstaff. Just Google-Herding Trainers Flagstaff Arizona and you might find it :) Have fun. Stinkers are one of the most loyal, protective and stubborn dogs I have ever known! We rescue a lot and she decided the moment she arrived that she wasn't leaving. She was home. 3 Golden's and a Kelpie-you should see the confused look on peoples faces lol Polar opposite personalities and looks but the core is the same-UNCONDITIONAL LOVE :)

    I won't get why so many people in the comments are upset that the dog isn't purebred? Like does it even matter?! Rescuing animals is much better in the first place, since you save lives and have a pet with great personality!! Not just some pet that has to act perfect constantly and that you can get money from showing off. That's pretty sad. And I find it sad that people care whether the dog here is purebred or not. I have an all black kelpie mix dog myself! We rescued her of course, and she's that sweetest thing. Also a very fast dog lol, I should try this trick XD her name is Kaya ♡

      I have 2 Kelpie X rescue dogs. The best thing I did outside of having kids. The beauty of a X breed is that you get the best of all the breeds it's crossed with and they are so hardy. They don't get the health issues of a lot of pure breeds. I love my Kelpie X's & wouldn't hesitate getting another when I can. There are a load of fantastic, loving & loyal X breeds in the pound. Why wouldn't you choose to give these great dogs a home?

    that's a kelpie, they are action dogs, never leave a kelpie locked in a back yard like a labrador, it will suffer badly, i let mine roam around the house were all the action is, and i wqalk him twice a day without a lead, he follows me on a bike, he knows the road rules and has not been a problem for 9 years now, i love the kelpie breed, but i have to work hard at keeping him amuzed, he loves rounding up the mini high speed buggy, he has more toys than i had when i was a kid, i used to have low flying drones at the park ???

    Only time my kelpie is on a lead is when I'm in the big smoke (seldom thank Huey ) when I'm in the local town he just casually walks by my side don't even have tie him up when I go into the pub or the IGA I'm more concerned someone might knock him off than him running away.

  • @BrianWestlakes

    Stoked to see a Kelpie getting the kind of a run they were bred for. They can be a real problem when they're under stimulated and under exercised. Watch his feet running on the road though, check the foot pads and watch for any sign of discomfort. We had a border collie who used to tow my brother like that and he ripped his paw pads up. Got his some doggy boots and he was back at it in a month.

    HEY YOU! Yes, you, sitting behind your screen reading this. I don't know
    you and you certainly don't know me. But I want to tell you something.
    Everyone has their own story. Yours might be filled with joy and
    happiness, or it might be clouded with pain and misfortune. I want you
    to know that you're a beautiful, wonderful, talented person. Even if
    your life isn't going the way you want it to right now, I know that
    you'll be able to make it out alright. I want you to do me a favor. I
    know I'm just a stranger, but just trust me, okay? Every time you see
    your reflection, be it in the mirror in the bathroom, in a window
    somewhere, or in a puddle on the street, I want you to look at yourself
    and give yourself a hug. Because even if you aren't the prettiest or the
    smartest or the funniest, you're something that no one else can be:
    you. And you are the greatest thing you can be. Smile at strangers. Be
    confident in yourself. Cry when you feel like crying, laugh when you
    feel like laughing. Treat yourself like a god/goddess because you
    deserve it. Hold your head up and keep your heart open. You're worth
    everything and then some. And always remember that no matter what, even
    if it doesn't seem like it, you're everything to someone❤️🤧🥺

    I adopted what I'm positive now is kelpie. I didn't have any intentions on getting a dog. My ex-roommate brought home what she was told was a Miniature Shorthaired Australian Shepherd, I told her no such dog existed she insisted stating he was purebred...anyways she was never ever home, kept the dog in a way too small crate all day and didn't even bother to give him shots.
    The damn dog got Parvo and she all but abandoned him and disappeared for days I was calling her telling her the dog was deathly ill. Finally me being an animal lover I took him to the vet and paid $400 for his treatment and nursed him back to health. She pops up after the dog is away from deaths door and better talking about she is moving and packed her room and tried to take the dog. I told her give me money for the vet, but she cried broke. By this time she owed me $600 because after I paid for treatment I got the dog shots. Mind you she was pretty much absent for 2 months, I would go days without seeing her. And I pretty much was the dogs caretaker. I told her she could go but to leave the dog.
    Now I wonder if the Parvo took something out of him because he isn't the same at all Energy Wise and gets tired very easy, he is 8 months right now. If we go on walks (Its summer and I am in Atlanta) within 30 minutes he is seeking shade/a puddle and taking a break/refuses to move and has to be carried back home.

      aw...poor little guy - s glad you were able to get him off that horrible room mate - people like that should be banned from owning animals for life. So irresponsible! And keeping dogs in crates is just inhumane - if you have to lock a dog up in the box then your lifestyle just doesn't suit having a dog! No do should be left caged and calling it a "crate" doesn't make it any less a cage.

      There's no such thing as a purebred kelpie. There are no breed books and they aren't AKC recognized as a breed. They're still bred to be working dogs, not to look a certain way so the priority is to get in good working genes, wherever those genes come from, and not to maintain a certain look or particular bloodlines. Kelpies vary enormously in appearance as a result. Some are lean and gangly, some tall and muscular, some small and fluffy.

    • @danh7135
      @danh7135 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah they may not be recognised by the AMERICAN kennel club, but that doesnt mean that it isnt a breed, just not recognised in the USA, it is a recognised breed in its place of origin (Australia).

    • @anniesamuel4787
      @anniesamuel4787 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wanted to register my kelpie with the Australian Working Kelpie Club (as opposed to a stud book) and I had to show her breeding. I could track her parents and her dad's parents and her mum's dad to a particular kelpie stud in Victoria and he mum's mum was put down as "stationbred" which is acceptable in those particular books. There most certainly ARE breed books, though! There are breed standards for sure. You are correct though with the working genes. I went to a stud to have my bitch serviced and I had to show that she was a natural herder (let her go in a paddock of sheep and see what happened) before the breeder would even consider her for a match with one of his dogs.

    • @Ocelot80524
      @Ocelot80524 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      working lines of many breeds look different from the show lines. in reading about kelpies, the biggest thing that stands out to me is the variation in appearance. coat color and type as well as size just varies a lot in this breed, and which lines the dog comes from can have an impact just like in many others.
      a show gshep vs a working one is vastly different and to some wouldn't even look right if it's missing the sloping back for example. i've seen blue merle cardigan welsh corgis called heeler dachshund crosses. without a dna test you can't really say, you're just being a judgy internet person lol. i think the average american would call these dogs husky german shepherd mixes so calling out purebred vs not purebred on pure speculation is silly.

      Kelpies vary a lot, as they were a mixed breed to start with with plenty of variation in the original litters that created the lines. Black and tans, black and golds, brown and tans, reds, red an tans... some have thicker coats, big size variations etc.

    At least you love your dog and take care of it, great work - just because he is a Kelpie doesn't mean he has to herd sheep, as you already know.. obviously you give him enough mental stimulation and exercise, some people just like to bring others down because they are jealous or don't know any better.
    One of the best dogs i owned was a Kelpie, who got alot of exercise but never herded sheep, and this is coming from an an Aussie who loves Kelpies :)

    Also, there are show kelpies as well. And tons of people have border collies without sheep, and under the right circumstances they too make wonderful pets!

    Germany is actually breeding some nice working kelpies. I know a few people who have imported them. They look exactly the same as other kelpies imo.

      Yeah man, I've taken my girl on bikes with a long lead sometimes when I'm near roads and she doesn't like to heel beside me on a lead, she wants to pull me and keep going harder, I mean I don't care but I don't want to strain the poor girl, finding it hard to teach her to heel

    I have a Kelpie too :)
    His name is Dingo. We rescued him from a lady that was fostering him.
    We thought we would have trouble with him living in an apartment since they are herding dogs, but he's never tore up anything and we do take him to a dog part regularly.. I would like to start taking him to some type of agility courses.. He loves to jump real high!

      Kelpies love agility. They're not just full of energy, they're about the smartest dog out there, they excel at the course work, love every minute and are such fast learners.

    Okey so if I have a Kelpie and I have paper and all that it is purebreed, it is till a fake one?

  • @LadySmartcat
    @LadySmartcat 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Don't listen to people like him. I have a Kelpie and so long as she's mentally stimulated and getting enough daily exercise she's very happy.
    What Ossters said makes no sense. If you thought like that, then you wouldn't be allowed to own any dog, as majority dogs are working dogs, even alot of the toy breeds.
    BTW, Auzzie is gorgeous! He looks happy and healthy to me. He's lucky you found him.

    Are you an Idiot?... or just Naive to the fact that 99% of Dogs were bred to do a specific job. Less then 1% of dogs actually do the jobs they were bred for. The Fact that I give my dog exercise, Mental stimulation, affection, and love makes him ALOT better off then the majority of dogs out there. He's cool where he's at. Thanks

    possibly the difference in standards in other countries like the American lined GSD are longer not as deep chested and more slender then their german bloodline counterparts....its is also like the american akita and the japanese akita

    i have nothing but working breed dogs Kelpies and ACDs and they do not need work, thought they need adiqate exersise and mental stimulation....I used to do flyball and agility with my dogs and every day 1 hour exercies + tones of mental stimulation and sometimes half a day at dog parks on the weekend etc....my dogs were healthy and well balaced dogs

    I need help figuring out my dog's breed. she looks like a kelpie (but she isn't as big, she is a medium sized dog. she is bigger than a terrier.) she sounds like kelpies (the way they whimper and bark) she has all the markings they do, all the behavior except she doesn't herd. she would rather run or hunt. I would like to say she is a kelpie mix but I'm wondering what she is mixed with. anyone want to make any guesses?

    I got a similar question the other day. I said, well i spose i could have let her rot in the pound till they killed her. But I give her a minimum for 1.5 hours of hard running a day, in grass and sand and water.
    I have been worried about introducing her to a skate board, but ill try it!
