    I grew up in Nigeria. Swam in the azumini river, or sakoba river. I went to school in port harcourt, lived in sapele , or aba and warri. I've seen relics from the war of Biafra. I consider it my home, the most beautiful people , I ever met. I am white though. I had the most beautiful images, but also the most horrible, that beeing burning tyres among people. Wont go into that. But, I cry , when I see the waters, the green life and spicy food, that , I miss. Man, my parents , I grew up with, are long gone. God bless. All mothers and fathers, god bless.

    Yes! I love this! My family is Jamaican and when I here Nigerians speak I feel like that is where we come from. That is original patois. And I admit Funke looks very much like my cousin so feel an affinity to her. Nigeria is definitely on my bucket list. I just know I come from there.

    Ehen is my favorite Nigerian 🇳🇬 pidgin slang that can mean anything from “as I was saying” 0:15 , to “no wonder”, to “continue” 😂🤣 ( extremely versatile) depending on the context. In addition Nigerian Pidgin is unique due to the mixture of tribal Nigerian languages with pidgin, Nigerian Pidgin is TOO SWEET ❤️☺️🔥.

    Also its good to emphasize that Naija pidgin keeps growing, as we begin to infuse some of our common Naija languages.
    I wan chop....also means I wanna enjoy, prosper, do well...(chop money) just depends on the situation/ context.

    Thank you, Funke. These are not only Lagos or Nigerian phrases. These encompass the West African Pidgin. Of course, Naija being the 10,000-pound Gorilla influences the language enormously. Nice job.
    One of my greatest frustrations with the recent crop of Nigerian movies is the deliberate avoidance of these elegant pidgin phrases that give West African English a specific character and beauty. That's a shame.
    Greetings from Cameroon.

    What does "just dey embarras me O" mean and " be like say na big thing"

    • @TosbeLeo
      @TosbeLeo ปีที่แล้ว

      Let me give this a shot:
      ① just dey embarass me oo. = continue embarrassing me / continue making a fool of me.
      This will usually be heard during a conversation between two people. You could hear some slight modifications like:
      - see how you dey embarass me = look at the way you are mocking me
      - make you no dey embarass me like that = do not embarass me in that manner.
      ② be like say na big thing = it is as if it is something big/important.
      - "be like say" usually translates to "it is as if" / "it looks like" / "it appears to be" / "it seems as if".
      - "na big thing" can mean "it is important" / "it is huge"
      So you may see a large crowd gathering somewhere and someone may say:
      "Be like say na big thing dey happen" = seems as if a large event is going on
      Hope that helps.

    is there a simple explanation to understand dey??

    • @TosbeLeo
      @TosbeLeo ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In general:
      dey = the verb "to be" (are am, are, is, was)
      ① How you dey? = How are you?
      ② I dey fine = I am fine
      ③ Body dey cloth = I am fine. (My body is still clothed)
      ④ Where you dey now? = Where are you presently.
      ⑤ You dey craze/mad? = Are you crazy?
      However, note that "th" is pronounced as "d" so "they" will become "dey":
      ① If dey catch you, dey go kill you oo. = If they get a hold of you they will beat the hell out of you.
      ② No mind dem., na so dey be. = Don"t mind them (pay them no attention), that is how they are.
      ③ Na so dem dey. = That is how them is. [here dey = is/be].
      Compare this with: Na so dey be = That is how they are. (That is how they be)
      ④ Dey dey here oo. (They are here.) = Dey don come (They have come).
      After awhile you get to understand when dey is used as "they" or "to be"

    Is pidgin similar to Yoruba or they are completely different languages?

      It is completely different from Yoruba, closer to English than any of the local languages.

      I learned pidgin in Cameroon (similar to Nigerian pidgin). Once, I went to Belize; the taxi driver and I talked easily in pidgin. It is pretty universal in former British colonies.

    Does chop not refer to chopping food? Rather than chopsticks? I wouldn't imagine many people in Africa using chopsticks in the past.

    Still trying to find out all the meanings of "chop"😫

    • @TosbeLeo
      @TosbeLeo ปีที่แล้ว

      Chop = just means "to eat" in its simplest form. So you could have:
      Make we go chop = Let's go and eat.
      However, just as some regular english words can be used in other ways apart from their original meaning and so can "chop" .
      Examples:
      ① Come and chop my money = Come and spend my money [that is say come and eat my money where "eat" means "to spend" in this case. When you eat something it is gone just like when you spend money it is gone.]
      ② That guy wan chop me for free. [A lady may be complaining a guy wants to get into her pants without even a date or taking care of her 😂. You get the point as to what "eat" means in this case😅.]
      ③ A beg, make I chop life small. = Please, let me enjoy life a bit.
      Usually, enjoyment comes hand in hand with spending money to enjoy. The relationship between chop and spend was explained in my first example .
      ④ That 419 guy won chop my money.
      If you can figure this out then you understand "chop"😂😅. [Hint: "419 guy" is a fraudster.]
      So if you think of all the slight variations of what "to eat" can refer to, I think you will understand how "chop" has come to be used in various phrases..
      Hope that helps.
