Leston Paul had to have spent a long time arranging this one. The musical arrangements are out of this world, no pun intended. The musical arrangements are clear, crisp, and masterfully done. It is fantastic if you have heard this song blasting on a well-balanced sound system in the open air. I dear say, the best I have ever heard (my opinion). Kudos to Mighty Swallow and Leston Paul for this one. Thanks for the joy!
I couldn't think of the name of thus jam right here! Back in the 80's in Nyc i dated a guy Tyrone from Antigua if i got only one thing great out if that relationship it was SOCA!
The good old caribbean fell good music that grew op on in the eighties. Swallow may have been known internationally for a cliched over simplified version of a soca song called 'Hot Hot Hot', but to caribbean folks he would be remembered more for Soca hits of this ilk. Makes me remember Trinidad Carnival in the Eighties when my parents used to take my brother and i to witness the spectacle.
I always felt connected to Sir Rupert after being tasked to write a summary of his life story for my History class. Truly a legend of not just Antigua, but the entire Caribbean. Rest In Power King Swallow!
I had the Pleasure of meeting Swallow back stage after performing this song for the calypso King in Antigua . What a blast that was. Tobago Crusoe was the MC . What a performance that was. DJ CITY from Tobago was in Antigua for Carnival along with a contigent of supporters. The DJ rocked Antigua from its core blasting Swallow music. Swallow best piece was " Trinidad the Caribbean Godfathe", and Man to Man . Ride high with the Angels Swallow
Another epic soca by one of the grandmasters. This song like 'subway jam" showcases Swallow mastery. It takes a songwriter with vision, understand and a keen sense of his surroundings to be able to carve out such epic songs. Again like his understanding of the NY subway system in "subway jam" he is able to use his knowledge of space and come up with this classic,
One of the baddest calypso song ever made. That was my last year of carnival in Antigua. The mood was somber cause swallow got robbed by crockery judging and king obstinate. Road march king that year though along with rude boy bacchanal. Wow! What a year, 1983....
This is one of the big tunes of all times. Breaking the sound barrier from the slow type calypso and pioneering the way for the soca genre as we come to know it.
Omg this song has me moving! back then had so much great calypsonians and music! Wish my era had more music like these other than the music we hv today.
Yo where do you get your info from? i dont remember Pelham Goddard being anywhere in the room when we did this record. It was Leston and Franky MacIntosh who did the arrangements. Marcelino on bass (me) Erroll Wise on drums. Junior Wharwood from Charlies Roots may have been on this that i dont remember.. But i assure you Emanuel Ector (at the time bass player for Charlies Roots was not the bass player on this one)
Hey Marcelino! I see now that I misread the backcover of the record, sorry! It says Pelham Goddard did horn arrangements on "long and sweet" and "Antigua". It says Leston is the arranger of the record and nowhere I see Frankies name? Also Emanuel Ector is credited as bassplayer along with you on this record. Anyway it´s good you let me know when I might have get some info wrong.
@@ScorpioPetey 😄 Funny fun session with Errol Wise on live drums. Just me on bass on this track. Charlie was in the studio giving good vibes and energy. Frankie and Leston were present. If i remember correctly Frankie played Fender Rhodes.
You're right. I spoke to Frankie, and he said he didn't do it. Charlie used that studio a few times i must have forgotten which session Frankie was present for. present@ScorpioPetey
It was not an average tune he was beaten with. King Obstinate bang him with "Antigua's True Heroes" & "Children Mele". You can't win Calypso Monarch with a party tune only. King Obstinate's message tune was far superior!!
Sorry...this song trump both children Merle and ATH!! I was there! Highway robbery. I remember distinctly speaking to swallow that night as he walked the street. He didn’t even appear mad; maybe because he began partying.
There is nothing average about the Flying Swallow or his Songs..Each Calypsonian is in a class of their own. Everyone knows that I’m a Swallow and Socagirl to de bone. Plz don’t ever use de word Average and Swallow in the same sentence. It’s an insult to the Man his Contribution to the Calypso Artform and his Legacy.
@@rumpel43 - I know Swallow very well. He is never mad if he loses a competition. He always said that somebody must win and somebody must lose. He still echos the sentiments that even if it appears to be robbery, forget it, it is just a competition, prepare for next year and try again-a very humble and gracious competitor.

I was there , I felt he was robbed also. Tobago Crusoe was the MC, he did the count down for the blast off . I ran away from work on sick leave .

@@rumpel43 I so agree with you. No offence, but Swallow was 10 times better than King Obstinate that year.
