I loved this song in St Lucia I was about 5yrs old when this song, my older sister was in carnival that year. The stories they had when this song played lol
Many would say good things about Penguin. Many would remember him for his songs. But there will always be more one can say about him. And let me be the one to say something about him no one else may remember....He was also a school teacher at Mt Hope Junior Secondary School. But there is one thing I didn,t know, he was also the brother of Martin Joseph, former National Security Minister. Rest in Peace my brother.
If my recollection serves me right, this was the runner-up of the Road March in 1980. I can still see Penguin singing this Master Piece at the OYB Tent! I was 16 years.
On holiday in Antigua as a teenager for two whole months with my mum and two sisters in 1980. Great memories.......happy times! I remember many of these awesome tracks..............also jouvet morning and Antigua carnival. We went to St Kitts too. My parents are from both these Islands. Talk about paradise on earth..............I didn't want to go home!!! I cried and almost made us miss our flight, just so that i could stay. Would've gladly stayed there if i could've, but we had to fly back to the U.K :( That was the first time i had been abroad. I bought the 12 inch King Short Shirt track, "Disco Dumpling." which was a big hit in the summer of 1980 in the West Indies 💟
When I was small, I used to get on dancing like a little maniac hearing this song play. My mother must have thought how ironic. I was a little misbehaving devil myself.
OMG What memories this brings back,, picture me 9 years old with a lil pitch fork covered in oil and ashes from a burnt car tire on the streets of Trinidad (SIparia to be exact) jamming on jouvert morning..!!
iI had the ultimate honor of meeting SEDLEY JOSEPH.....HE ALWAYS HAD A SWEET SMILE ON HIS FACE...LOVED HIS ICE COLD GUINESS:))THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SONGS.....STILL SOUNDING GREAT AFTER ALL THESE YEARS....R.I.P PENGUIN.....YOU WILL BE MISSED:(
I was 6yrs old my friend, we grew up in an era of great sokah and it's evolution 👍👍👍. I remember blowing my whistle and ponging something whenever this was played 🤣🤣🤣
I have a half brother who is no doubt, possessed by a legion of demons,...right now he's out there ranting & raving, while I singing along to this tune..."look de devil dey..wheee.
This is as mischievous and irreverent as it gets, that's why it's one of my all time favourites. I'm really happy to read that so many people agree with my view that ol' time soca is vastly superior to its modern incarnation.
I can remember this song very well it was a jouvert morning my parents wasn't home went to the stand pipe to bathed and this man in blue chase me from one street to another and this particular song was playing I was only six from that day I'm afraid of blue devils and now I'm a big woman I can listen to this song and laugh 😂 or carnival was carnival ❤
This is the very first Jab Jab Soca track that was recorded in the history of soca music in 1979. All the other Jab Jab Soca recordings that we know of whether they feature whistles or the conch shell, came after this one.
Good kaiso for Jou Vert mrng for Paramin Blue devils. I could just see d whole band of 20 coming down the road; and every body doing a diff.devil dance. 👹👿😈
Charlie's Roots were one of the best soca bands in the history of soca music with top class musicians throughout the band all being conducted by Dr. Pelham Goddard on keyboards.
This song here by the late Penguin is one of the first fusions of Jab Jab style rhythms with soca music and it was recorded in late 1979 with backing by Charlie's Roots and arrangement by Pelham Goddard and was a massive hit for the 1980 T&T Carnival season running 2nd in the road march race behind Superblue's "Soca Baptist". Regards Jab Jab Mas you can go to link below for a well researched accurate history on the subject: facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10155578038710931
@chaoticustt I strongly agree on your comment. The old school soca is better than the Shit they play these days. I can't stand it. It's a bunch of rubbish. This Soca Music can definitely beat the Soca Music that exists now.
you all forget molasses on the skin, then it migrated to blue ....ot forgettin the jab jab and papa bois the stickman....and the stickman song "when ah dead bury meh clothes"
Idk what SOCAPRO talking about... I'm a born and raised GRENADIAN... and Jab Jab (old oil) BEEN our thing WAAAAAAAY before the 2000s! LoL... that's a joke right??? It's the rest of the world that found out about Grenada and our Jab Jab culture after Tallpree made it POPULAR... but Grenada has ALWAYS been the home of SHORT KNEE/VECKO & JAB JAB & CONCH SHELL!! So idk where you got your history from... but you need to check it... cuz you're very far off!! This is TH-cam... and you can search Jab Jab on here and find videos outdating your year 2000 claim. Stop put down my island man... cut it out!!!
Speak!! I remember jab jab coming down Market Hill as a child back in the 70's and being frightened as all hell!! Ask any Grenadian about it....jab jab oh-le-oh-le-oh jab jab.
+Selekta Supa The problem is we didn't document our history like Trinidad did, and take pride in our culture. This is why Trinis, rightfully so, are able to make the claims that they do. Their history is documented on paper and in song. Try finding a picture of carnival in Grenada from the 70s or earlier. Or even a calypso from prior to the 70s. French slave master brought carnival to Dominica, Haiti, Martinique, St. Lucia, Grenada, St. Vincent, then Trinidad. OUr culture is very similar. Trinidad isn't the only ones who know of Jab Jab, Canboulay, or stick fighting. That is all of our culture, but they did something with it that none of us were able to do. We need to record our history, so others can't claim it then call us followers afterwards. Big up Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique
I loved this song in St Lucia I was about 5yrs old when this song, my older sister was in carnival that year. The stories they had when this song played lol
I remember this song! I was about 5 or 6 but they would play it on the radio back in the mid 80’s in Trinidad 🇹🇹.
Dave Elcock, Phil Simmons were the radio personalities back
Even more appropriate and relevant today than 43 years ago. Long live Caribbean music!!!!
A strict disciplinarian I was told as a school teacher
BIG TUNE!!! CLASSIC STUFF! You don't hear tunes like this again!!! LOVE IT!!
If my recollection serves me right, this was the runner-up of the Road March in 1980. I can still see Penguin singing this Master Piece at the OYB Tent! I was 16 years.

This was the song and Soca Baptist when I went to my first carnival and was introduced to Soca music. After that I was hooked!
OMG What memories this brings back,, picture me 9 years old with a lil pitch fork covered in oil and ashes from a burnt car tire on the streets of Trinidad (SIparia to be exact) jamming on jouvert morning..!!

This music goes back to the 1960s and earlier in Trinidad and Tobago. It also has a lot to do with Devil mas on jouvert morning and Carnival Monday.
You are correct. You can check this link for more of the history: facebook.com/SocaPhD/posts/10155578044090931

Selekta Supa I agree with you. tallpree was my first taste
Trinidad's Carnival and Jab Molasse is about 200-300 years old. Not something new. It is as old as Carnival itself.
Selekta Supa is Granada in Spain?
