    Excellent channel and great work, Alastair.
    Some years back I found that two-pack repairs or large hole fills in MDF were often visible when returning to previous jobs due to slight movement/shrinkage. I found a better solution was to CA a small piece of MDF into the damaged area, or in some cases simply create a hole and plug with an MDF pellet. I carry MDF scraps and pellets of various sizes with me at all times now. Works especially well on exterior jobs if using Tricoya MDF.
    Your attention to detail on your projects is top-notch 👍

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Yes we have observed that any different material tends to eventually ‘telegraph’ through a painted finish however perfectly you sand it smooth in the first instance. Mdf plugs are a good idea!

      @@Alastair_Freebird I'm about to binge watch some of your back catalogue. Massive respect to you for how honest and open you are.
      I see you use water-based paint for spraying wardrobes and furniture. I got kitted out with a HVLP set up three years ago and have settled on Benjamin Moore's Scuff X (quite pricey) as my paint of choice. I've never come across a one-part with such a durable finish (they claim it's close to a two-part). Have you ever used it? And are you still happy with Sayerlack?

      @@bertie4127 hi are you in the UK? I tried Benjamin Moore paint once and was very impressed. I’m tempted to try this scuff x. We do get on well with the sayerlack though. Thanks for your interest in the channel! I do white often hear of people binge watching!!! Obviously it appeals to others doing this kind of work. I wish I could find time to keep making TH-cam videos but lately I am far more active on Instagram stories

      @@Alastair_Freebird Yes I'm in the UK. And Scuff X is definitely worth a punt. I'm a long way from mastering spraying yet, but I'm very happy with the finish you get from Scuff with a drop of extender chucked in. Your finish looks flawless so I've no doubt you'd get fantastic results.
      Your videos are quite unique in how you explain the reasons for taking certain directions, and the personal stuff you chuck in the mix will certainly connect with other people in the game. I'm just watching 'Wardrobes: CNC Construction and Problem Solving.' Those shadow gap box shelves are genius!

  • @braddalzell2942
    @braddalzell2942 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another tip from experience with filler, in an area where 2 part filler will have difficulty bonding or better your chance of bonding sink a screw just under the surface so the filler sticks onto the threads and the pozi head, works well especially on areas where there's a lot of filler filling a difficult area, smaller areas mitre fix works well on mdf, guaranteed bond and it sets like plastic, downfall is it takes a little more sanding and pairing off.

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You mean you would use mitre fix / superglue on its own as a filler for small holes? Interesting... yes I can see it would have no trouble bonding. I suppose you’d have to take a lot of care not to spread it beyond the hole

    • @braddalzell2942
      @braddalzell2942 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Alastair_Freebird yes exactly, but if you do what you did with tape before applying filler and applied that same method I think you'd be okay, sometimes it's about building layers of mitre fix 👍

      If it's got wet and really fluffed up, there's not much you can do. If there is enough sound material to cut away then do that and repair with 2 part filler as above. It's hard to say more without fully understanding the situation.

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. MDF is finer, like compacted dust. Chipboard has a core more like weetabix! Melamine faced boards used in kitchen cabinets are most often chipboard core. Repair can be difficult. Water damage may not be redeemable. But if it’s just localised damage. the principle of cutting away all loose or ‘blown’ (de-compacted) material with a sharp blade holds true. Then use the 2 part filler. In many cases replacement is easier!

    • @jesuschrist736
      @jesuschrist736 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Alastair_Freebird I thank you so much for being so thoughtful.Well,my husband does nothing at all and i must fix them😀.The damage is localised on the corners of the bottom two cabinets,because of the water ,i think (above them ,there's the basin where i do the dishes etc)All the others are ok.In Greece is extremely expensive to replace your kitchen.I have 20 cabinets(10 up and 10 down) .The mistake is that we didnt put wooden cabinets from the beginning...Wood has its own value,though it wasn't popular at the time we ordered the kitchen...Forgive me for my awful English!I will follow your advice! As far as i am aware, 2 part wood filler is the best wood filler you can buy, but it definitely sinks slighty over time. I fitted a new door casing in my own house, filled and painted the fixing holes and it looked perfect and the fixing points were invisible but over time you can see where the filler has sunk. Does anyone know if there is a better alternative to 2 part filler on market? If there is, i can't find it.
    Thanks, Joe

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did the filler sink or did the wood slightly expand perhaps? It might just be like trying to hide the end of a tenon in the edge of a door. You can make it perfect then over time it will show because of relative changes in the 2 pieces of wood
