  • Extracts from a 60 minute DVD I have made of a visit to the Isle of Lewis in March 2009 called Blackhouse Weekend, containing video taken around the restored thatched blackhouse village of Gearannan, where we stayed - ancient relics like the pictish broch at Dun Carloway, and the Standing Stones at Callanish and a visit to the town of Stornoway and its castle grounds

Excellent video. To a softie like me living in the gentle climate of Northern California, it is amazing that people have made lives for centuries in what appears to be a very harsh environment. I maintain a correspondence with a friend who lives on Skye, and following up his mention of a visit to the Isle of Lewis led me to your video.

My wife & I were at Lewis-Harris in 1992. Callinish, the peat fields, NO shops open on the weekend. Fond memories all; many thanks for this video.

good that. I love those croft houses, they look so cosy in winter. I would hqve liked to see the tunnels between the houses being explored. Sounds like a great way to visit friends and family when the weather's wild outside. Great upload.

Been to the isle of Lewis it's very mysterious, and kind of feels like you're going back in time in a way. Really want to go back. I would want to stay in a black house next time.

David Keir In truth, you do go back in time when you visit Lewis and Harris. There is an undeniable tension between traditionalists who wish to maintain the old way of life versus the modernisers who see the islands getting left behind by modern society. The introduction of Sunday sailings has done much to bring about change of late, the Sabbath no longer feels quite so restrictive but one is still conscious of a certain time warp, which is certainly not the case in either Orkney or Shetland.

I love this video. I have never heard the name Lewis Island before until I read some article on BBC and googled it which brought me to this video.
I really enjoy seeing all the beautiful things. I would love to visit this place one day.

@noneil100 I am delighted that this meant as much to you as it does to me - my mother was born on Lewis - I love the island and I love the people - I just can't get up there often enough. I am glad you enjoyed the Gearrannan clip.

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching this video, it was for me a lovely journey down memory lane! I stayed in Taigh Thormoid 'an 'ic Iain in 2003. Spookily, your stay in March 2009 (which I imagine commenced on the 27th) was just two days after I had departed after living at Achmore for six months over the winter of 2008-09. I've recently (June 2015) made my own return visit to Lewis (and the rest of the archipelago) and found everything to be reassuringly the same as I had recalled many times during the intervening years.

I really enjoyed this. Its been a few years since I have been to Lewis. It brought a little tear to my eye as although from London I have strong connections to Lewis and on my many trips to visit have always felt sad when leaving on the ferry or plane. Thanks. It was lovely.

We were a wee bit luckier than you and were able to camp under good weather at Uig before catching the first ferry in the morning to tarbert. The blackhouses look fantastic and after showing the wife your video I think we have the seed planted for a future holiday, she has family in Stornoway too, it would be a good visit.
Keep up the good work, I'm away to watch some more of your clips :-)

For Translation: A "Minch" is a sea channel between mainland Scotland and the Outer Hebrides islands. 25-45 miles (40-70 km) wide. Most of the 'Minch' between Ullapool and Stornoway is used by the UK for their nuclear submarine excursions.
IF I could live without worry of Healthcare, housing, food, beer, scotch and the Internet . . . THIS would be where I'd spend my future. And my past, though merely imagination, can also find a wonderful place on Lewis.

Oh right, I suppose I'm a scrooge then :-))) I prefer to store the media electronically and reuse the tapes, saves money that way.
With the Canon XHA1 I have been using Pro HD Tapes at 23 quid a pop, if I was paying I would be using something cheeper to be honest :-)
But I'm not, which reminds me I'll need to get an order in for a 5 pack when I get back to work, we'll be needing them.
