As an Argentine, I initially thought that the novel might be difficult for readers from other countries to understand. However, after watching your video, I realize that it deals with quite universal perceptions. Excellent review!

Im from Argentina and read it in spanish when it came out and god, she's amazing, there's not much of a tradition of horror in Argentina and mariana does it great, it was the first time i actually read something horrifying of a horror that was close, that could reach me. Absolute recommendation

I love how when we're introduced to Adela she's in a yellow rain slicker, and of course she's missing an arm. Lovely nod to King's IT. The empty house gave strong Neibolt Street vibes too. Great review!

I’m so grateful for this review. I finished this book a week ago and because I am practically friendless, I had no one to talk to about this book, which affected me greatly. I’ve listened to podcasts and watched video reviews but they just couldn’t capture the feel of it. You did in a short time, and the way you spoke about family trauma touched me so much, I’m on the verge of tears right now. Im now following you. Can’t wait to hear other reviews. ❤

Great review. I admire the way you are able to talk about a book's themes, how you can summarize the really important stuff. This book is a journey. I'm from Argentina (I've been living in the US for many years) and this book took me back to very well known places, and I'm not talking about physical places only. I was born and raised during the dictatorship and grew up while democracy was being restored (actually Mariana is practically my age) and she captures the social and political atmosphere of that time perfectly. She is my favorite argentinian contemporary author, by far. Thank you for your thoughtful and passionate review. You rock!

I just finished reading the book, and I loved it. Now your review is just assuring me it's even better when I reflect on everything the book talks about and its themes. The version translated in my language is only 600 pages with a smaller text font, and that was a bit of a struggle for a slow reader like me to see those long paragraphs on the pages, but the book was fantastic so I can ignore that this time around 😅

I'm so happy you read this!! I knew you would love it. Mariana Enriquez is my favorite author alive, the feelings I had reading this! There's also a character that appears in one of her short stories, maybe you noticed, she's the protagonists of the short story and here we get to know what really happened to her. Also the magic and rituals here are so real, I couldn't help but think that Mariana ✨knows things✨.
So much pain and darkness, loved it. I'm from chile and I lived in argentina too so the dictatorship and post-dictatorship (cause I wouldn't call this a democracy) themes always hit home. Please read Pedro Lemebel! Very punk, queer, and disruptive.

In an interview (Caja Negra, en el canal Filo News) Enriquez said she is writing a book about ghosts and part of her research is playing with a ouija. She takes research to the next level.

I was initially drawn to that book by its wonderful creepy cover and pre-ordered it from Blackwell’s since it’s not available in the US until Feb. 2023. I often feel daunted by big books, but after seeing your review it’s made me eager to dive in after its arrival. I love books that are different!

I had put this book on hold at my library many months ago. When it finally became available, I wasn't sure if I still wanted to read it. I'm so glad I watched your review before I sent it back unread because I loved it. This is my favorite book of the year so far. The history and themes Enriquez explores mixed with the atmosphere she creates is perfect. Thank you! As an aside, the length of the book didn't bother me at all.

I read that book few weeks ago, and I am so happy to have followed your recommandation. I am not fond of horror movies, I avoid them « like the plague », and still, I decided to « take a risk » by reading a few horror books and this 100% out of comfort zone novel. Of course it’s, oh oui, tough, but I was amazed to realise that I can appreciate this genre anyway, thanks to help me to « open my eyes » with that. I was very impressed by the father/son relation, the violence despite love and love despite coldness and cruelty. Very powerful, made me think a lot… and I will definitely read more for Mariana and Argentinian authors 😊, Merci!!

I'm glad a stumbled across this video. It's convinced me to go back and read it again. I was completely overwhelmed on my first read through that I ending up missing out a lot of the points you brought up in this video. This is one I will need to get a psychical copy rather than a digital one so I can annotate it and take my time with it. It was such a beast the first go through. So glad I watched your video. Now I know what to look for the second go around.

I just wanted to express my thanks for such a wonderful and erudite review.
I have just begun reading this stunning book, and after just over 150 pages I already have a sense it will be one of my favourite books of the year.
I don’t anything about Argentina and the military incidents that happened in the early 1980’s, but this doesn’t affect my enjoyment at all.
The characters are beautifully drawn, and although there is a difference in their physical looks, I would love to see Justin Theroux play Juan.
After watching Justin Theroux’s incredible performance in ‘The Mosquito Coast’ tv series, every time I read about Juan I always picture this actor.
Thank you again for the book review.

It'll take me more than four days to finish this whenever I can get myself a copy. I am a suuuuuper slow reader lately. I read a book of short horror stories called Tiny Nightmares: Very Short Tales of Horror (edited by Lincoln Michel and Nadxieli Nieto). It is less than 300 pages and it still took me 3 days to finish it. lol Anyway Our Share of Night is now a higher priority thanks to your excellent review. 😊

Thank you for this great review! I definitely want to read this book soon. It sounds perfect for my book club (full of horror lovers) but from what i've found looking at the content warnings there seems to be animal cruelty/animal death in it (which is something one of the book club members isn't ok with). Would you say that part of the story is minor enough to skip past? Or would it be a deal breaker?
