I ran the course Saturday night as one of the lucky participants of the Marathon Pous Tous and it was absolutely stunning! And during the men’s and women’s race, it made things very interesting already early in the race. Loved it!
The course really made the race! As a lifelong cycling fan I was getting ‘spring classics’ vibes, with the hills AND the descents influencing the racing outcomes. So interesting to see how certain runners came into their own on the hills.
They even ran on plenty of cobbles on this course, granted they weren't muddy and falling apart in a farmer's field... but still. The wooded area of the course did have an Ardennes vibe to it.
The Olympic Marathons were great races with the competition and the sites. I also really enjoyed the commentating, especially when Clayton Young was brought on the broadcast. The story of him sitting down with one of the elite women during a meal and discussing the coarse being faster due to the hills was fascinating. Overall, props to the Paris Olympics for the awesome coverage of the Marathons.
@@SagasuRunning Agreed. Such a great series and gives a look at what it takes to compete at the top level. Makes it easy to root for him, Mantz, and the rest of his training partners.
Love your recap on those highlights of both men and women marathons. Incredibly races that captivated my eyes and minds for more than 2 hours, especially Hassan's last push into the finish. Agreed all your wonderful comments, but I will also add the Japanese runners, Akasaki and Suzuki, in the highlights -- both went 6th in Men's and Women's Olympic Marathon. Akasaki actually led the way at 29K in that crazy hills. Suzuki battling to close the gap with those five top runners in front of her. Absolutely brilliant runs. Both of them held their composure very well even they were in a battle.
I actually had two sections about Akasaki and Osaka…. And then Suzuki. I cut them out of my final ends due to time. Wa so happy to see the Japanese run knees do so well. Suzuki’s final 10k was all fits too. She was alone for most of it. Agree in Hassan’s kick. Here 10,000 race was great to watch too. She is incredible. As always thank you for the support and watching! 🤙🏻
Really interesting to see why Eliud went with Alphafly 2 when it such a brick (blister both feet after 2 runs, stable, heavier and shitty ZoomX, returned it asap, never ever again with my experience) 😅 but if it works for the Goat (2:01:09, Berlin) then who are we to say Shoutout to adidas and Pro Evo 1, sweeping the major podiums. If Emile Cairess managed to got 3rd, it would've been a clean sweep for adidas. Nike has some catching up to do in that space imo. Also Conner Mantz finally opted for Alphafly 3 instead of his beloved Alphafly 1. As an Alphafly 1 lover myself, I now prefer v3 so it's great to see.
My favorite post-race Chris discussion. It was definitely a cornucopia of brands. All the major racing brands were well-represented: Adidas, Asics, Brooks, Puma, Nike. That 10.5% hill was Tour de France steep. The Tola story was similar to Kristen Faulkner in the women's road cycling. She was a replacement and ended up winning over the cycling elites. The story of the female runner from Bhutan was heartwarming.
Hassan in my mind goes down as one of the best overall distance runners of all time. She still has a couple more marathons to cement her place as the best female marathoner, but I have no doubt she will do that given her track ability hasn't faded yet. And who knows, maybe we will soon be considering her as the best (male/female) marathoner of all time.
I have to agree on both points. She really is something else. That track kick is devastating if she is positioned right in a marathon. I look forward to her further marathon performances!
Assefa could have buried the field had she just pushed from further out. Hassan was struggling up the hill and Assefa was comfortable. Perhaps she thought Hassan wasn't a threat. But as usual, Hassan surprised all of us.
True, that was Asefa's moment and perhaps she should have pressed more there but it's easy to say watching on TV in the comfort of my living room. As a Sifan fan I was screaming to not let herself get dropped on that hill. When she reattached to the group and the hill was over I knew if they don't tire her before the sprint she is going to turn up that deadly kick of hers :-) . It was such a nail biting finish!
Two things....Assefa seemed to be running scared. Of the hills or of Lokedi/Obiri/Hassan...but she never looked settled, she was always darting her head around. I think she stuck with everyone as she was worried about the course...but once they got over the hills she couldn't shake anyone. Hassan ALWAYS looks like that in a race, she had the same look in the 10,000m...that is just how she runs it seems...because she is often there at the end ready to kick regardless...
I am new to running, but I think the course was amazing. Beautiful scenery for people watching Challenging for runners, planning and strategy was needed. And after all OR was beaten ;)
That’s the “available” model most can go buy. The Evo 1 is still rare and not every athlete is sponsored or have connection to the brand or get priority for top gear form their country’s federation. Plus, some Adidas pros still prefer the AP3. So it’s definitely still relevant and still in widespread use.
Yup. I counted 3 of them. Geleta was in a pair in the Men’s race…. I didn’t catch who was in the two pairs I saw in the women’s. Also, I only saw maybe 6 or 7 Vaporflys overall, equal between VF2 and VF3. Changing of the guard for sure. Especially looking back on the Tokyo 2020(1) marathon.
I completely agree with your thoughts on the course. The uphill section, while absolutely brutal, really added to the overall appeal and challenge of the race. Sure, tackling an incline, especially one with a gradient of more than 5%, feels like pure torture for any runner-but it’s precisely this kind of challenge that makes the course so much more engaging. Without those elevation changes, the run would have been as monotonous as doing 106 laps around a sports ground. As for Sifan Hassan’s performance, it was nothing short of extraordinary. Watching her win was a reminder of what true athletic greatness looks like. I have no doubt that she’s on her way to becoming the GOAT in women’s running.
I mean the course, even without the elevation, was beautiful to watch racers on...but it would have been a very different race without those hills. Regardless, we got an outstanding event! Hassan's olympic performance was remarkable. I look forward to see where she pops up next.
I think having hills makes the race more dynamic and exciting and separates the good all-around runners from the flat specialists. Who can tackle the gradients and manage and control the downhills makes for a better watch. Just like pro cycling the stages that produce the better races are the mountain and hilly races rather than the flat sprint stages. A lot more tactics involved. One thing I noticed in the triathlon races both the men's and women's races there was an overwhelming amount of Asics metaspeed sky Edge & Paris & Pumas and a sprinkle of Adios Pros and On Cloud Boom Echoes. Not as much Nike's which was a surprise.
Agree on the course. It definitely changed the tactics of the racers and made for much more interesting race strategy. Asics has been a leader in the triathlon space for a few years now. After the AF1 hype died down there, many seems to move to Metaspeeds. On has been spending in the space quite a bit too.

I kept thinking about Kelvin Kiptum during the men's race, so it was a bittersweet affair, but I did enjoy Abdi going from third in Tokyo to second this time. That moment where Nageeye cheered on Abdi at the Tokyo Olympics has stuck with me tot his day. Sifan Hassan is simply a madlass though, no idea how she did the 5, the 10, and the marathon in such a short timespan. Her Tokyo performance as mad enough already!
I'm surprised Nike hasn't yet released their version of an Adidas Evo 1 equivalent for single marathon use. As it stands the Alphafly 3 weights 50% more than the Evo 1 and that's got to cost a few seconds over 42.2km.
Li-Nings Feidian Ultra 4 for many women and by the men for Samsom Amare surprised me (finished 10th). I do have 3 pairs of the ultra 4 (neeeerd) and from talks with chinese friends its a shoe that the athletes did not welcome thaaaat much. I also have seen the Feidian Ultra 3 more often on the podium than the 4 and it got released in march! Surprising still is that the ultra 4 is often out of stock in China, yet I rarely see it. Besides its 42mm stackheight (39mm at the point where olympia measures) its a very very veeeeeeery firm shoe that punishes you a lot when the fit is losing during a run because then you start to pronate and the arrowhead carbonplat works against you. The Ultra 3 was boring, but it worked. The Ultra 4 is super fun, but for many maybe too firm and too complicated plate tech. What is fun, in my feidian ultra 4 review on reddit many people trashtalked that it is a cheap knockoff of the AF3 - they do not have a single similarity, be it the foam, the tech, not even in the upper. Oh, they do have a similarity, both retail are translated into 320bucks ... lol I also missed the Xtep 160x... yeah female walking won gold in the Xtep 160x 3.0 Pro, so - also in the 2, almost 3 years old model. The point you mentioned... change for the sake of change. I'm very excited about the Peg Plus and the VF3 that will arrives soon, since these will be my first - real - full zoomX experience.
I saw a handful of Chinese brand shoes in both fields. Many I didn’t recognize…. But there were a handful of them. The most I’ve ever seen in an Elite level marathon, outside of China. Oh man… first real ZoomX experience. That’s a special moment. We all remember our first time. Enjoy it…. I’ll be curious how you feel about them after 4-5 runs.
It certainly made for far more interesting viewing this time. I’ve run one hilly marathon Leeds here in the UK, that had an elevation gain of around 400m, though the max gradient was something 5%. I actually found running the downhills more challenging than the uphill sections.
I fully trust, as usual, Nike's ability to lose the lead. The guys from management are their own proctologists, looking more at / in their rear instead of reading the market.
This post race analysis are great, very lucky whoever got the EK shoes, best souvenir from Paris ever haha. Do you think will see something new from brands for the fall marathons?
Adidas has some important shoes to announce and release (in small batches) and Berlin is their main stage....though it seems the main release for them will be early 2025. Asics seems to have a surprise in the works but everyone else seems done for the year as far as super shoe and marathon shoes go. Lot's of color ways coming I'm sure. Thank you for watching! 🤙🏻
It 's amazing to see both men and women champion broke the OR in such brutal track and hot temperature. Those shoes are part of the reason but I think more and more talent runners go into marathon race is even more important. It may could be explained by marathon runner has the highest income compared with other athletic sports.
I was thinking along the same lines. The super shoes really made this brutal course, less brutal. The athletes were (mostly) all well prepared, but the shoes definitely helped. As far as cost...I don't know. I just bought a pair of super spikes and they were much less than a super shoe....
I agree that throwing actual terrain at runners makes the marathon a much more interesting event. Boston is iconic because of the Newton Hills, for instance. South Africa does a great job with hosting a bunch of marathons that have a lot of local character and nots of hills -- it may be due to the cultural influence of Comrades influencing the character of all foot races in Souther Africa.
On Running seems to have done well. Are they on your radar? I can’t help but wonder of the midsole holes (or whatever they’re called) are a technological feature or a marketing design?
I've actually run in On quite a bit over the years, especially back in 2015/16 and 2018/19. I have alot of experience with their "cloudtech" (the holes) and speedboards. They are on my radar but nothing is overly compelling to me. Alot of flash and things that look/sound innovative in PR vidoes but in reality aren't that special. I am considering the Cloudsurfer Next...I'm actually going to put a community post up about it next week with a poll to see if anyone is interested in me covering the shoe and talking about On. Besides Obiri...they aren't really on the global elite stage heavily (yet)...but I think this will change drastically in the coming years as they have money to burn on sponsorships.
Shout out to Emile Cairess 🇬🇧 for his 4th place in men’s race. Qualified via London Marathon this spring and showed there that he’s a gritty runner. Hoping we can look forward to great things from him.
I didn't see any Saucony on course. It's one of the only brands I didn't see anyone in. They must have been there somewhere, but I didn't see them (and I looked).
I think people many people shot for fast times, hence faster courses are more popular for the avg runner… For pros/elite agree tough courses are interesting but a world e record still takes the cake in garnering excitement and support for the sport
Fast courses give you better chances at running qualifying times for other races like Boston, the Olympic trials, and most importantly the Olympics themselves. The qualifying time for men is 2:08:10 and qualifying by rankings is a crapshoot. You only have about 2 times a year getting a qualifier. I believe Elroy Gelant with his 11th place finish was the top qualifier by rankings. He crushed other runners that had a way faster PB. They need a slightly slower qualifying time and allow the marathon field to grow by 20 to 40 runners. Supporting a slightly larger field would not be difficult.
I liked the field size. It was a good mix of favorites and wildcards that the strict qualifying standard enforced. I'm totally fine with what I saw there. The Olympic qualifying standard should be a reach for all but the best...
Fun fact: the Mongolian runner was running his 6th Olympic marathon! I could have sworn I saw Mantz training in some electric Alphafly 1s the other week but may be wrong.
I have doubt that Mantz had a pair of electric AF1s and he was testing which one felt better. Glad to see him in the AF3 finally though. Especially as well as he raced.
@@SagasuRunningthink my other comment was deleted but there’s a video of the shoes - 9th most recent post on Mantz’s feed right now, a collab reel with Clayton and USATF
I read that the Ethiopian team lodged a formal protest after the women's marathon alleging Hassan impeded Assefa at 150 metres before the finish. That is bollocks as I saw Hassan was already gone past Assefa who clearly was the aggressor in changing her line and giving Hassan a shoulder barge from behind. Thankfully the Jury of Appeal quickly dismissed this protest.
It looked even more innocent to me. I don’t think either of them realized they little kink was there in the wall. It must have looked dead straight and that kink caught them both off guard.
@@SagasuRunning I wish you to succeed in running the authentic marathon and visiting Athens, and why not also ancient Olympia, the Temple of Apollo, and the Acropolis. If you're feeling more adventurous, you can try the Spartathlon, which ends in the city of Sparta. Greetings from Greece and thanks for your replies.
Nice content thanks, and the silver medal in the Marathon has been won by Bashir Abdi with Asics Metaspeed Edge Paris, shoes that i'm trying and considering really amazing and fast for my feet.
I think the Kipchogue era is over, his legacy will remain forever and will hardly be matched, but it was clear that he was not the favorite, after Boston and Tokyo.
@@SagasuRunning As a key long run workout shoe, the AF2 is GREAT. But after racing it in, I found it was just too much shoe past 32k (bulky/clunky). That's where they did such an amazing job with the AF3. I plan to wear my same pair of AF3 at Chicago and again in Boston (assuming 8:36 buffer holds, run in the AF3). AF1 I reserve for 5/10k it's just WAY too much shoe for me and my calves at or past the half.
@ATREU850 When tie AF2 released was struggling with plantar fasciitis in both feet and bought two pairs of AF2, so I could use one for long runs and the other for racing to see if a more broken in one was better for my PF… neither were at the end of the day. In fact I think all the time I spent in the AF2 contributed to my PF getting out of hand. Never again.

Exactly, regarding the unique course profile.
💯
It’s the best marathon because it’s not a procession of a time trial ….small country teams and a free for all to win medals, I love it
I fully agree. 💯
nice takes. agree on the americans. they ran amazing
Thank you. 🙏🏻
Comrades is immense and has it's own gravity...I can definitely understand this.
Agree...he did it in the Evo 1 v1 (with the slick outsole) as well. Great racing!
I was waiting a lot this video :)
Hope you enjoyed it! 🤙🏻
Anyone know if Endorphin Elite 2 was represented?
I didn't see any Saucony on course. It's one of the only brands I didn't see anyone in. They must have been there somewhere, but I didn't see them (and I looked).
I believe Female Canadian Malinda Elmore wore the E2.
I think people many people shot for fast times, hence faster courses are more popular for the avg runner… For pros/elite agree tough courses are interesting but a world e record still takes the cake in garnering excitement and support for the sport
Berlin will always exist. It’s good to have a mix but the Paris course was exciting and dynamic. I really enjoyed it.
@regiseal woah that's sick.
@@SagasuRunningsurprised but he actually did
I read that the Ethiopian team lodged a formal protest after the women's marathon alleging Hassan impeded Assefa at 150 metres before the finish.
It must have looked dead straight and that kink caught them both off guard.
assics, saucony, newbalance, hoka, puma
Saucony was the only one I didn’t see in the marathon or any event I watched (and I watched many). 🤷🏼♂️
Great comments and style.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Does anyone know what were the shoes worn by the Italian who led the men’s marathon at the beginning?
I’m sure someone will chime in…
The early breakaway was by Italian Eyob Faniel. Looks like he's using a new Kiprun shoe acknowledge by the shoe maker on its Facebook page.
Yes yes…. I was trying to place it. But it did see Kipruns on one of the Italian athletes. There you go. Thank you! 🙏🏻
There is nothing like the original marathon in Marathon, Greece.
All iterations of the course I've seen have a profile similar to Boston. Which is very good.
@@SagasuRunning Have you ever tried running a race in the Athens Authentic Marathon?
Nope… but it’s on the list for someday.
The MSEP is fast. I have a review and some comparisons up on the channel. I'll have an update video on this in the coming weeks as well.
@@SagasuRunning Thank you
I think the Kipchogue era is over, his legacy will remain forever and will hardly be matched, but it was clear that he was not the favorite, after Boston and Tokyo.
Agree.
The new On looks like it’s on to something
Hahaha....
Kipchoge and me... Prefer the Alphafly V2 😂
You may be the only two. If I never need to put a AF2 on my foot again…. It will be too soon. 😂
Fully agree. I also preferred it as a long run shoe… but racing in it, that last 10k was like running in mud. I never want to experience that again.
Since i have AF3 my AF2 is basically one of my long runs shoes now lol
@ATREU850 When tie AF2 released was struggling with plantar fasciitis in both feet and bought two pairs of AF2, so I could use one for long runs and the other for racing to see if a more broken in one was better for my PF… neither were at the end of the day. In fact I think all the time I spent in the AF2 contributed to my PF getting out of hand. Never again.
14:44 - LMAO I noticed this, honestly I thought Nike maybe were doing a covert marketing campaign or something
I feel like we will need to endure that recycled content ever 4 years...
Paris Marathon isn’t very flat but certainly not as hilly as the Olympics one
Ya, I looked up the normal Paris course and it's definitely not as compelling as the Olympic course.
I think Adidas is at the top right now and the Evo 1 proved to be super suitable for slopes with its aggressive rocker, the bar is very high for Nike Hasan won for being Hasan more than
I do thing the Evo 1 has the edge current;y, but the AF3 isn't far off. Weight is the next battle ground and Adidas made the first move.
big city marathon have to be flat so they can brag about world records at their location
No… those who beg are the ones with net downhill…. So you can BQ. 🤦🏼♂️
Eliud is just a shadow of what he used to be. ( Father Time is 1003 and 0).
Agree...I'm curious what his next step is here.
