I got both shoes today and is just back after trying both. I did 2x2k with both and 5k pace and preferred the Edge. Then I did 2x2k with both at my marathon pace and very much preferred the Sky. One noticeable difference between the shoes you didn’t mentioned is that the rubber on the outsole extends further back on Edge. I think that implies that Asics think Edge will be preferred by heel strikers. I’m a heel striker, but after this quick test my preference will be Sky anyway. When you pick up the pace they feel softer and more enjoyable - but I was faster in Edge because they keep pushing me forward in a different way. Sky is just great feeling and squishy, but it feels like I need to work a little harder to keep the tempo. I will keep both just for fun. And BTW, Sky felt quite more accommodating than Edge but both shoes were actually shorter in length than I anticipated. I think they are closer to original series in length (still little longer) but not longer than + series.
One things to add. I’m disappointed at Asics quality control, in Sky my right shoe is 165g and the left 174g. 9 gram difference! In Edge the right shoe was 172g and the left 167g. I think 5g is on the limit of ok. Also on the Edge pair the front of the shoes are not identical, the rubber goes up to a higher toe on the left shoe and the rocker therefore is not identical. On Sky they look identical but has this huge weight difference.
Wow very informative comment thank you! What you say it’s in line with kofuzi’s review and in my case the cadence /stride length data I extracted from my watch. My conclusion after watching this video is that if I buy the Sky I can keep it for Half Marathon /Marathon and use another shoe i.e., Adios Pro 3 that I already own for 5k -10k. Thank you for your comment and thank you Chris for making this video.
Great info! I found both Paris series for longer than the Plus series and TTS for me with absolutely zero fit issues or foot/toe problems. Asics race uppers are outstanding as well. While I don’t think Asics has designed either shoe for a specific foot strike… I think years of Vaporfly running has shown us that it is optimized for a forefoot striker. It’s not that they can’t work for heel striking (they can and do) but that configuration just seems to favor the forefoot.
I had a 4g weight difference between mine. No QC issues at all… everything is symmetrical and clean. I actually have never bought an Asics shoe with any QC issues. Maybe I have a low bar coming from years of Nike. 😂
Really, an AP3 for shorter stuff? That is one shoe I think prefers longer steady stuff, more so than any shoe I can think of. It is because of that that the Takumi Sen exists.
One of the best videos on the Metaspeed series. But the best in categorizing the shoes based on industry similarities. It answered my own questions based on my best marathon performances and the shoes I’ve worn those days.
This is, without doubt, the best video I've seen on either of these shoes and the differences between them. Anyone can tell you about the plate placement, but he breaks down the mechanics of what the plate placement really does. Great work.
Most informative comparison video I've ever watched about shoes. Absolutely brilliant! Thank you for helping me to decide on my London Marathon shoe, looks like the Edge is for me 🙌🏽
I dont necessarily totally agree. I got both and the Metaspeed Edge Paris feels both natural for my stride and I perceive it as softer. I think the closeness of the plate to your foot (just as it can close to the ground) can impact your perception of softness/comfort. I tend to agree that if you have a big powerful bounding stride and are really putting a lot of force into the forefoot to load it, the the Sky Paris is for you. If you tend to not have as big and powerful of a strife or roll over more (including midfoot or rear landings) then the Metaspeed Edge Paris is for you. Furthermore, the Alphafly 3 is more Vaporfly than ever with more roll, higher drop, etc. As someone who wasn't a big Alphafly v1 person for similar reasons to the Metaspeed Sky+ (although Alpha v1 worked better because it was softer), the Alphafly V3 is better for me than ever. Similarly, the Endorphin Elite also works well just like the Pro 3. These shoes don't absolutely destroy my quads by forcing a big powerful stride that changes my gate like the Metaspeed Sky+ did (and to a lesser extent Alphafly v1). Similarly, if you listen to how Puma talks about the "powerful propulsion" vs "lightweight propulsion" of the Fast-R 2 vs the Deviate Elite 3, it appears they are trying something similar and trying to have the Fast-R 2 be that big powerful stride type of shoe. I will say that on the run the Metaspeed Sky/Edge Paris are closer than ever and the difference feels more nuanced. I can run in the Sky Paris without totally trashing my legs now because of the foam improvement, though the Edge Paris does still seem to work better. Both versions are much better than the + versions because of the new foam and lower weight. They still aren't the softest and are kinda on the Pwrrun HG side of things. They are no longer harsh, but are still one of the firmer super foams.
I agree fully that the difference between the MS SP and EP is very nuanced now. It’s as drastic as it was with the Plus series. It is why I feel strongly it comes down to feel (and perception as you pointed out) more than anything now.
Finally a expert based comparison of the Edge and Sky! Really appreciated. This year I ran 3 marathons: London in the VF2, Sofia in the Sky Paris and Eryri on the AAP3's - one of each of you explained configurations! (Obviously can't compare Eryri to Sofia on London as it's much more trails and undulating) but still - found the VF very aggressive but fast, the Sky Paris more comfortable but not as fast over the last 5K and the Adidas very comfortable for the whole distance which absolutely helps on those last K's.
Very insightful! The Superblast has turned out to be my favorite workhorse marathon trainer after watching your thoughts on them. Would you say the Edge Paris would be closer as a racing companion to the Superblast?
On paper the Sky has always been the companion to the Superblast. Mostly due to amount of foam underfoot. However… I’m a big fan of the Superblast and prefer the Magic Speed 3 and Edge Paris greatly for a plated shoe… so it can work well.
This is by far the best video I have ever watched with regards to running shoes. Great explanation and I can now go away feeling much more informed. As someone who has hypermobility, I have never loved the Alphas and maybe this is why...they are too unstable. Thank you.
Ya, that would be my guess. Your biomechanics need to rigidity of the plate near the ground to give your a stable platform to work from. Thank you for the kind words. 🤙🏻
So this is fascinating. Having tried so many of these shoes and been Goldilocks (too firm, too soft) with them all, i recently became very attached to my Adios Pro 3 and Cielo X 1 shoes. To see them called out the way you did is validating in a way.
Those two shoes are a bit unique in the super shoe space at the moment. I’m a fan of the AP3, even with the upper issues, definitely. I’m glad this was useful for you!
I don't think I've ever heard a simpler, more complete explanation of the carbon plate shoe configurations. I would consider myself a stride runner who likes to feel the ground. That probably comes from getting my start as a sprinter. What would you consider the Adidas Takumi Sen or the Puma Fast-Fwd Nitro?
Definitely the Takumi Sen for you… the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite is another one I’d look at… also you may really like the Vaporfly if you have never run in it before. Avoid the Puma Fast-FWD could be interesting for you but I think the Deviate Nitro Elite is a better bet.
Great video! I actually wear 3/4 length orthotic inserts and tried last years Metaspeed Edge+ and found that the ride was too stiff and loaded my calves more than I wanted (I sold them shortly after purchase). Your above video (and the other new video on the Metaspeed Paris) really illustrates the changes Asics made to the foam geometry and I commend you for that... great graphics! The Paris models are similar now with differing plate locations in the forefoot. I now see that last years model for the Edge+ had very little heel stack/foam which I certainly felt in the few runs I did (pace approx 4:30/km) and they seemed very "slappy" with the low plate configuration. I thought my orthotics were the issue but now I'm considering getting the new Metaspeed Paris Sky (based on your video!) as I really like the bouncey feel even though I'm a cadence runner primarily (plus I train in the Novablast 3 and 4 currently). I think the thicker softer foam in the Paris (softer than last year's model) up front and along the entire shoe for this model, will help soften the overall feel when wearing orthotics. Any thoughts on my reasoning? My race distance is typically half marathon as I focus on IM 70.3 triathlons. Thanks for doing these technical videos!
I think you may be on the right track with your logic… assuming they your orthodox and the high plate of the Sky Paris don’t interact somehow. They will be very close to one another.
Clearly the best review between those two 2 shoes! My cadence is: 170-175 easy pace (4:45-5:00/km), 178-180 Threshold (3:55-4:00/km). 180-183 5km-10km pace (3:35-3:45) I think my cadence is medium-high? Therefore better the Edge? Mainly I want it for 10km races
I'd call that medium cadence. your Threshold pace. My 5k pace is around 3:40/km and my cadence can get well over 200spm, 1mile pace, it's over 210spm...honestly too high (I always need to remind myself to "glide" in my stride). Honestly, per my video, you can go either way. Just depends on the feel you prefer. Both shoes will work. Asics's stride vs cadence thing is meaningless. Go for what feel you prefer...
@ Thank you very much for your answer! Also do you think Vaporfly 3 is better? I can’t find the Sky/Edge Paris for less than 250€ and the Vaporfly I found them by 220€
Personally I think the VF3 suits me better. The MSP are fast… but the VF3 is faster for me AND I recover better with them. I did a “super shoe efficiency” data video that digs into all of that.
Love the deep dive technical videos. They’re always so interesting to watch. I’m definitely more of a cadence runner and tend to gravitate toward the rolling category of super shoes (mainly Vaporfly). But after trying the new Sky Paris, I could definitely see myself picking it over the Vaporfly for Marathon specifically. 5K - 15K, I think Vaporfly is still better. HM is a toss up, but still leaning Vaporfly. I feel that the bouncier, less aggressive plate configuration is more sustainable for races that last 2+ hours. It’s hard to ride a Vaporfly with good biomechanics for that long. I think foot strike is irrelevant tho. It’s more about how much you’re engaging the ride. I still need to get my hands on an alphafly 3! Trying to dial down my marathon show for Chicago this fall. 😅
You are echoing my same feelings on the MSEP & VF3… it’s not about distance to me but I am finding the less aggressive plate in the MSEP is easier for more steady running. It’s not that the VF3 isn’t… it’s just use average runners can have sloppy mechanics, especially when fatiguing… the MSEP feels like it has a bigger sweet spot. I need more running in it… but it’s feeling like that early.
My wide feet will never fit in these shoes, so I can only imagine running in them. However, I still really appreciated your explanation. I learned a lot about plated shoes in general. Thanks.
Ya, sadly the Metaspeeds are very narrow shoes, some of the most narrow on the market… so wide feet are not an option. Even if you could get your foot in the upper it would likely hang off the edges of the midsole.
Considerably more narrow than the Boston 12, both fit AND midsole/outsole width. They are similar with to the Takumi Sens… though the upper last isn’t as narrow.
That is really a bummer. Just started running 6 months ago at 44yo (played basketball for 25years) and I'm looking to buy my first marathon shoe. Been training in Velocity and Deviate Nitro 2 and Boston 12. Boston 12 is wide enough in the forefoot and Pumas made 4 of 5 nails on my left foot black. Love Puma shoes, DN2 fells more comfortbale and softer then Boston 12. I think i'm a midfoot to heel striker. Was really looking forward to Edge Paris but knowing how narrow it is.. What shoe would you recomend (as a suggestion to look more into)? Would Vaporfly 3 be ok or maybe Superblast (as i'm going to run halfs but not full marathons in a year or two)?@@SagasuRunning
If you like the Boston already… I’d look at the Adios Pro 3… the fit will be similar too. Adidas Lightstrike Pro and Puma Nitro foams are the same compound (though tuned differently)… so their feel is similar too. The Vaporfly 3 isn’t a great option for heel striking, it has some durability problems there. The Alphafly 3 is another option if you want to try Nike… but it is MUCH softer than anything you have been running in (that you mentioned) so keep that in mind.
Amazing Work! I always get Knee Pain with Low Plate shoes and this catigorization is on point! Vaporfly, RocketX2 doesnt work for me. But running really well and painfree with the Sky and Alphafly! Need to check out the Endorphin Elite 😉
You know what you respond too and what works for you! Excellent. That takes a while to figure out with running but once you do it makes a world of difference. Thank you for the kind words on the content. 🤙🏻
Great video. Your explaination made a lot of sense. Based on this and other reviews, I went with the Edge (love VF1, 2, and 3; rear foot striker). Unfortunately, it just didn't seem to transition easily for me at my marathon paces. Reminded me of the Alphafly v1. If I focus on my form, I can get the shoe to pick up the pace. I also don't notice the transition issue at faster than marathon pace. On top of that, I had a quality issue with my pair where the right shoe heel bowed in more than the left heel and caused irritation afer 8+ miles. I returned the shoes and I don't have the energy to try the Sky. I will stick with the Vaporflys for now.
The MSEP is a great shoe, fantastic shoe, but it is still not a Vaporfly… glad you could return them. It’s odd to have a quality issue with Asics… their fit/finish is usually so high.
I have the magic speed 4 and looking forward to my first run in them. When I hit the lottery I’ll get one of these. I think I’m a heel striker naturally
As a heavy forefoot striker, I think the Sky Paris is for me. I loved the v1 (600km) so with the Paris with a softer and more responsive midsole and the significant weight reduction overall, this is a sure buy for me. Asics are onto something.
The v1 Sky has a low plate configuration… so you might want to check the Edge Paris first. Unless you did run in the Sky+, which introduced the high plate.
Vaporflys have low plate and I love that and Alphaflys have high plate and I love that too so I don't know, I guess it's just the midsole for me not the position of the plate. However, Sky Paris will give the light and snappiness of the Vaporfly with a Alphafly-like setup which is going to be awesome especially with the amazing weight reduction.
@NeillyVille On paper that should be the case for the Sky Paris. That’s what I tried with the Sky+ last year but couldn’t get over the late stage rocker and massive amount of foam under the toes.
Jees. You totally nailed it. You’ve articulated what I felt but couldn’t express when I made my first foray into carbon plated shoes last year - I hated that feeling of sinking through the foam when I tried on the Hoka Rockets, Nike Vaporflys and Saucony Endorphin Pros. Now you’ve explained it’s because the carbon plate runs along the floor of the shoe! I ended up buying the Alphafly 2s, and loved them, so I guess it is the Metaspeed Sky Paris for me! Thanks man.
I’m glad you found your way. Running is often alot of trial and error… but some things can be clearly said. I’m glad this helped with the Metaspeeds. 🤙🏻
Bloody brilliant review I wanted to know what shor would be similar to the endorphin pro 3 and I ended up getting the edge after watching this video. However I do like a 8 to 10 mil drop from the endorphin pros... For a 5K to 10K race shoe I hope asics are gonna serve me well... Keep up the great content quality!
Thank you! this has been been very informative. These shoes are very difficult to try in India because of low stock. Your video narrows down the choice for an over pronator like me.
Thank you! An excellent breakdown of the 2 metaspeed shoes and greatly aided my understanding of the shoes. After watching the video, I ordered the Skys ... It'll be interesting to see how they perform when they arrive. I have the Saucony Endorphin Pro4s (& Speed 4s) and enjoy running in them but wanted something a little bouncier ... Fingers crossed - the Sky's will fit the brief 😊 Keep posting such informative videos! Thank you 😊
I hope they work for you. The Skys will feel more bouncy, especially after 20-30k into the foam to help it loosen up. You'll notice a difference form the EP4, for sure. Do keep my posted here. I'm curious how you get on with them.
@@SagasuRunning sure - will do. My very first impression when I slipped them on this afternoon was actually about their stability or rather the lack of 😂 but I've got to get the foam activated and a bit more accustomed to the foot feel then I'll be better placed to give you fair & balanced f/b.
@@SagasuRunning Hi - hope you're well? My thoughts on the MS Sky ... So after several runs totalling around 50 kms in the ASICS MS Skys P, stability turned out not to be a dominant issue for around 25 Kms. Up to that point, the shoes felt generally comfortable and dare I say spongy. I was always conscious that the heel is narrow so perhaps I was more careful about heel landing than normal to avoid a misstep and twisting my ankle. With the UK Stevenage Marathon on the 20th Oct, a twisted ankle would have been especially bad news! They clearly appreciated me leaning forward and putting some extra effort into front to mid landing and returned the favour. On both of my long runs, at the 25 kms ish stage, my feet rapidly became uncomfortable and I was delighted to finish shortly afterwards. Clearly my feet will have to adapt to the Sky's - suggestions? Just put in the Kms with them I guess. Actually I experienced something similar with the ES4s but not the EP4s ... The EP4s just seem to keep ticking the Kms off for me. They don't change or evolve much on the way, incredible! 😀 I had some difficulty choosing my marathon shoe this weekend and was very tempted to opt for the EP4s. Ultimately I selected my Superblast2s - I didn't want to risk using a plated shoe this time ... I'll have to do a full marathon in the EPs but another time 🙂 Anyway, hope you found my comments interesting 😁 BW. David
@dgcadogan The sore feet in the MSSP could be from the overall stiffness of the shoe. It’s a VERY still platform. Shocked by you saying the foam felt “spongey”, that is one word I’d never describe FFTurbo+ as. If the EP4 also gives you similar foot soreness..the EP4 is also a stiff shoe but much less so than the MSSP… I’d say your feet need to get used to running in plated shoes more. If you train a lot in non-plated shoes your foot is used to flexing and moving a certain way in your gait. Adding a stiff plate in there causes that to stop and work other muscles, which is likely where toe soreness comes from. The only real answer is to run more in the stiff plated shoes, specially focusing on mechanics when you are in them and paying attention to where you direct feel discomfort. Once you know where the discomfort is starting from you can work on strengthening those areas. My guess it’s also not directly in your foot, thats just where you feel it set in… the stiff shoes are changing your stride in a why your body isn’t used too.
Wow, what a great explanation, very entertaining to watch as well! One question is still open for me though, being: At what cadence/ stride length should you rather go for the sky or the edge?
There is no specific universal number. In everyone’s data both a stride length AND cadence will go up the faster you run. However, one will go up faster than the other. According to Asics that is what you “are”. Though in the Paris series the two shoes are so similar it really comes down to which feel you prefer.
@@SagasuRunning Oh ok. Thanks a lot for clearing that up! Great explanation right there. I decided to buy the vaporfly 3 because they were on sale and 50 euros cheaper than both of these, I hope they fit me well
Oh my gosh, how a so great video can even exist??? Thank you so much my friend, unbelievable job done here! would love to see this detail in each next shoes reviews and overall, to know if a shoe is made for light or heavy runner please. It could be so helpful!👏
This was so useful, thank you very much. I love the Alphafly1 and the Adios Pro3, both for their bouncier/firmer characteristics. Using your info suggests the Sky should be a far safer bet than the Edge. Great video!
I have watched tens of videos about super shoes and ALL the shoess mentioned. I have owned almost all of them too!! hands down best simple in depth breakdown of the carbon plate tech as a whole. thank you. I am now more confused which to buy though. I love saucony pro and the speed but found them too aggressive for marathon. love the alphafly for bounce but the Nike heel arch was a killer. thank you again
Given all that you have tried… at this point I’d try an Adidas Adios Pro 3 or the New Hoka Cielo x1… both are less aggressive and offer the roll and a bit of the bounce from the AF without the arch issues. Thank you for the kind words on the content. I’m glad it is useful!
@@SagasuRunning thanks for the tip! I went crazy and tried the Adidas prime X strung 2. they were good for 20k then felt sore. maybe a bit tooo much foam! I have heard that the light strike takes a while to. warm up but once it does it's golden. I found that the ASICS superblast were a bit like this. I completed a marathon just this w.end in the superblast, they were lovely but didn't seem to warm up until 5 km. great til 35k then they didn't seem to have much uuummmpphh. cold also be I was tired !! thanks again.will look for more of your vids
Asics crushed it with these. Thorough engineering concerning addressing the unique force characteristics of stride vs cadence running. Combined with the incredibly light weight and ultra high performance critical foam, these shoes are exhilarating
I agree. After a few years of ALMOST being in the top tier of super shoes… they blew the doors off of it and possibly have made the best super shoe or 2024… though I think Adidas may one up them with what they have coming…
I went TTS and on the same size as my Superblast. I have no complaints. The fit is ideal for me in both shoes… especially so in the Edge Paris. I also found that the Sky Paris fit my foot TTS. I have over 30k in the Edge Paris, most of it marathon pace or faster and have had zero fit or foot problems. It goes to show how personal fit is. I will talk a lot about the fit in my initial impressions on Sunday.
I did a Asics ID foot scan when I was in Japan and measured my foot as 255mm and was recommend 265 for the superblast which was great. Perfect fit. Got the Sky Paris in 265, toe to tip spacing felt the same, but I think is slightly narrower vs superblast. Cause I got a little sore on the outside of both pinky toes in the Sky Paris. I'm hoping my toes toughen up over time that it doesn't bother. Btw I'm using pretty thin socks.
@intosite7279 the Sky and especially the Edge Paris are noticeably narrower than the Superblast. They are true race fits. The Superblast is almost a race fit but has a little room in it because it’s a trainer mainly.
Very well explained. I bought the sky Paris after briefly doing a very short treadmill test in store. The edge felt too much like the VF3 which I’ve just bought a few months ago and are too squishy for me (I’m 195lbs). I have the AF1 which I like but I’m surprised given the plate configuration similarities, the sky feels very side to side unstable. I’m concerned it wouldn’t be supportive enough in the latter stage of the marathon. I’m aiming for 3:05-3:10 and was looking at the CieloX1 and returning the sky’s but worried that the extra 100g or so at my shoe size would be a big trade off. The reviews for the sky has been so good I really want to give it a chance, any suggestions?
Honestly, try the Alphafly 3. It has the same bounce the Sky has but infinitely more stability and comfort. It's also not as soft as the VF3, at least the Air Pods add another dimension to the ride. It's the faster shoe for the marathon by alot.
@@SagasuRunning I really didn't want to just go with the crowd (I know there's a reason they sell so well), would you recommend any other options for a heavier but not necessarily slow runner?
The Saucony Endorphin Elite v1 is worth looking at…it’s also similar to the Sky. The Cielo X1 is in there too but it’s not REALLY a shoe focused on speed, it’s more for comfort.
Hello. First time I come across your channel. I enjoyed this video! Very informative and exactly the information we all needed! Please keep on posting videos!
Been revisiting your analysis - great analytical framework which gets me to rethink what shoes are good for me. I'm a forefoot striker with cadence range of 180 - 200 (5.15min/k - 3:15min/km) easy to short interval. I feel I'm in the cadence camp. Are you also a relatively high cadence runner and would you say that has something to do with your preference to say VF3?
I would say our analytics are very similar. My paces are nearly identical to yours and my cadence range is nearly identical. There are a few things I find I prefer about the VF3 but the ability to accelerate, via cadence, is one of them. I have a data deep dive video publishing tomorrow (Sunday) going into my own data over a range of paces and I I evaluate what works for me and what doesn’t…. You may be very interested in that.
I may have decided to buy both so I can try them out. I thought at first I was a cadence runner, but then I realized I might be a stride runner, and then I just didn’t know because I think it changes depending on the workout or the race goal since I’m still learning and developing my running style. Luckily I found one pair on a BIG discount, so I could justify the splurge to experiment and see which is better for my needs.
This is the ideal way to do it if you want to buy both. This is the issue with cadence be stride. Every runner increases both when going faster, just one is more prominent than the other. However, as I pointed it… it really comes down to the feel you want under foot more than anything else. Enjoy them. You can’t go wrong with either.
I don’t think it makes any difference. Neither the Sky or Edge are great for heel strikers. It still comes down to what type of feel you want off of the toe.
The Saucony Endorphin Pro 4 is a good heel strikers option. Maybe the best. To be clear, as a heel striker, you can very much run in the Metaspeed Paris shoes…. You’ll just not get great outsole durability in the heel.
I find it interesting that the Edge is supposedly firmer than the Sky due to the plate positioning - my experience is the opposite! I just bought the Edge Paris, and in the shop I tested the Sky and Edge back-to-back for 2 minutes at 4:00/km. I found that the Edge felt much softer and more comfortable. That said, the Vaporfly Next% v1 has been my favorite shoe for 5 years, so it makes sense that the plate configuration in the Edge works well for me. I could also mention that I run with a high cadence, 190-195 SPM in races.
You are used to that plate configuration and know how to load it. You are also used to the main chunk of foam under your foot. I’m not surprised you felt this. I do too, as another vaporfly runner. Generally though the low plate configuration is considered more aggressive, harsher and more stable.
This has made the choice easy, I have a high cadence at any pace so ASICS says edge However i absolutely love the Aplhafly 2 (did not like the 3, although very fast), can’t run in Vaporfly’s at all. So sky it is :) should be much more comfortable for me
It was. I tried the Sky on Sat at the Asics store, now I have to go back and try the Edge, because although I'm a midfoot striker, based on yours and other people's comparisons to the Vaporfly (I have two pairs of the first version), I might be better off with the more aggressive feel of the Edge
Thank you for the breakdown and information! I kept thinking how Invincible gets complaints from both sides and plate configuration change ZoomX trainer into supershoe for specific runner who likes the foam but can't overcome specific things about it. I loved the video, keep them coming!
I'm definitely a stride runner. I'm 6'2" and weigh 240 lbs with a fairly long stride and a low cadence rate. However, I'm wondering if in your opinion one of these shoes translates better as a 5 to 10K racer, regardless of stride versus cadence? My goal this year is to improve my distance running by increasing my overall speed in short/mid distances. I'll be running multiple 5k's and a 10k in the spring/summer, then I'll be running a half marathon in the late fall (using the Hoka Cielo X1). Would the Edge provide more benefits given the higher stiffness and stability in the shorter distances, even for a stride runner?
I would think you are the Ideal Sky Paris runner. The Cielo x1 will give you the lower plate, even with the craziness of the geometry. You are heavy enough and likely strong enough you need the extra foam in both shoes. You’d probably do fine in the Edge Paris but I don’t agree with the distinction they one is for short distance and one is for long distance. They are designed to cover the same distances and use cases.
That’s brilliant. Thanks. I’ve had 2 low plate shoes but don’t feel like I get a lot of benefit. Might try high plate and see if that makes a difference
Thank you for your great review. When you say that the edge would be “stable” can you compare its relative stability to the Endorphin Pro 3/4 and the Vaporfly? Currently I've been racing in the endorphin pro but the Edge/Sky look very interesting for fall marathon season
Stable is very relative here… it IS a super foam super shoe… but compared to the Vaporfly I’d say the MSEP is better given the FFTurbo+ isn’t as compressive as ZoomX. Also the Vaporfly is actually wider in the forefoot and midfoot compared to the MSEP (which is very narrow). The Sauconys are wider and more flared on the sidewalls so would offer more stability over either, even with their compressive foams.
Do you think sole wear on other shoes can be a helpful buy indicator on whether to buy edge or paris.? Ie Edge for obvious worn out heel striker, that could be a cadence runner.?
Not really. Foot strike doesn’t determine cadence vs stride, both types can have any foot strike. Again, it comes down to the feeling you want. That being said… the Metaspeed Paris series have very minimal heel rubber… wear for a heel striker will be harsh on them. Though it seems the FFTurbo+ foam will be a good choice given it’s on the firmer side.
The thing is that the first Metaspeed Sky had a low plate. The Sky+ initiated the high plate. Looked my Apple Watch data to understand if in Marathon pace my stride or cadence increase the most, turns out they both increase by ~25% from Zone 2 to Marathon Pace. Tried both shoes in the shop the Edge seems more fluent to my feet, but in shop you don't really run.
Ya, the first generation of the Metaspeed was more about how much foam, not really about differing plate configurations… there were minor differences but the stack height and rocker differences were more how the shoes differed. I ran in the Sky+ last year, knowing I am a cadence runner per ASICS’s definition but it was an experiment that was interesting. But in the Paris series I’m definitely an Edge runner. The Sky just felt awkward. Not as bad as the Sky+… but not for me.
@@SagasuRunning I always thought I'm a stride runner -but now I doubt about it. Data shows that I become stride runner at 5k -10k pace not so much at marathon /half marathon pace. Original Sky, which was also marketed as a stride one, was my first super-shoe and the first shoe I fell strongly in love with (the other one being the Superblast). I haven't run in Sky+. The other super shoe that I've run in is the ADIOS PRO3, which gave me some PBs and great races, but I never fell in love. Oh wait! I've run 20km in Vaporflies 2 and hated it, so much so that I gifted them to a friend. Have you run in the original Sky or Edge? If yes, how you'd compare them with the current models? What was your preference then?
I ran in both at an Asics demo event when the shoes launched and did eventually buy a pair of Edges…. But I always found them too stiff. The super still Asics plate with FFTurbo was too much for me. The Edge Paris feels very different. FFTurbo+ is very resilient without being too softer… but it’s not harsh like FFTurbo could be. The plate feel is similar to the Magic Speed 3, which was like eh OG Edge to me… but the foam adds a totally different level to the shoe now. It’s a big change.
@@SagasuRunning Thanks for that, I couldn't hope for better answer. Great video by the way as many of your videos. I subscribed immediately after my very first visit here not so long time ago and I'm not easy to subscribe. Then it was well below 3,000. Completely different approach than other channels. I live in the other side of the straights and couldn't comment all this time, yesterday I changed a setting in my VPN and it works.
Was perplexed on the weekend ... Everything about my running is edge paris: A) high cadence runner i average easy runs and well paced runs at 180, on tempo would be 190+ ..170 and under can get very awkward for me (not genetically gifted, got short legs) B) got vaporfly and endorphin pro, shoes of which i love/run the most in.. they're the only carbon plate shoes i ever own C) My stride length doesn't go beyond 1.00 m, it usually stays steady at 0.92 D) reasearched long enough, to decide the edge is for me, incl. this video Went to the Asics store, to find i preferred the Sky.. though, ran only like 10 meters for both of them, not long enough to determine anything.. by definitely Sky over Edge, for me, not even close, by a long way.. Btw never had any intention in owning a pair, just wanted to understand,... But now im confused! But actually, walked in the store as an exclusive saucony runner, walked out knowing asics is gonna one day join the family... Damn, that shoe felt amazing.. its like the vaporly 2 (esp. the upper) but made with my idea of comfort in mind
We are very similar as far as our run dynamics, cadence and stride length. This is why I stress it’s not cadence vs stride…. Is run feel. Do you like bounce or roll. That’s determined it and either shoe will work for either type of runner, though there likely is biomechanicaly a “correct” shoe for you. I’ve been quite impressed with the Metaspeed Edge Paris and have been spending quite a bit of time in it lately.
@@SagasuRunningtks for the reply.. late reply here.. I kinda do both bounce and roll.. definitely a roller, but with bounce sprinkled here and there when picking up the pace Been doing more intervals and reps since my last comment, prepping into my favorite race now 4 weeks out.. I have a better picture of what I might need, and concluded, it's all about that bounce .. Gonna get the skys next week! (Too bad the all red are sold out, and it's now the less appealing (to me) "safety" yellow, but whatever) Tks again
Thanks a lot for this great video. When looking at my data, it seems that I am more a stride runner than a cadence runner (comparing the percentage of increase for both). However, I am more used to low plate shoes like the Endorphin Pro/Speed which I appreciate a lot. I have always thought that low plate shoes were softer and more comfortable for half-marathons/marathons and this was a reason I have made this choice in the past. But the new Paris version seems the opposite, with the Sky being a bit softer and still very comfortable. So I am a bit lost now to decide between the Edge/Sky. Also, I am still waiting for some durability reviews about these two shoes (the Endorphin Pro had a great durability)
It’s one of those days things that you need to try both. Moving to the different platform (low to high plates) will take some trial and error. Durability is one of my biggest questions about the Paris Series. I’ll be testing them as much as I can in the coming months.
Neither distinction matters...it's about the feel he enjoys more. The two Metaspeed Paris shoes are nearly identical, beyond the plate position, so there really is little difference in this generation beyond feel.
Heel-forefoot, stride-cadence, I think those are just proxies for foot power/dynamics. My spm is ~80 (LR=1) on easy runs, up to ~100 on 30sec hill sprints. In theory, that makes me a cadence runner; my stride also lengthens as I go faster, as do most. However, I also have a powerful foot strike. I don’t like rockers or shoes that till you forward. I want to do the work, to take advantage of my powerful foot strike. Thus, I think the Sky is better for me. The Edge is likely better for people who like to roll forward.
We seem to have run similar dynamics… I too don’t love a lot of rocker in the forefoot… but I much prefer the low plate configuration (Edge/VF)… in fact it my be why I stick to the VF so much as it doesn’t roll me as much as other shoes…
@@SagasuRunning#NoNike so I can't comment on AF/VF. I have the original Edge. It's good for shorter races. I don't think I'd want it for a full marathon. I didn't like the Sky+/Edge+; I felt like they forced you forward and weren't good for slower efforts. That's not there in the Sky Paris (tried it on, haven't run, haven't tried the new Edge). I generally don't like squish. E.g., I prefer the Hyp Max for up tempo, but the Rebel for easier & steady. I love the Sinister for track work. Although I don't like squish, I want to give the Sky Paris a try. I think my powerful foot strike might give me a good bounce return. TBD. And, although I'm primarily a midfoot striker, I can vary my stride from forefoot to heel.
Neither Metaspeed is great for a heel striker, not much outsole coverage on the heel. However, it doesn't matter which one. As I said in this video it comes down to the type of feel you like off of the toe.
Generally speaking the Metaspeeds are ok at best for heel strikers. They are a very narrow platform, especially in the heel, with little rubber coverage. That being said… either one will work. It still depends on the type of ride off of the toe you want.
Very nice video, I have the SKY TOKYO and was in doubt which one to pick but it looks like that for the PARIS generation I should move on to the EDGE version.
Hands down, this is the best video to explain the edge/sky dichotomy. Categorizing other super shoes was incredibly helpful as well. Thank you.
I’m glad it was helpful. That is definitely what I was going for. It really is a simple choice.
I agree.. Great video.
Agreed!
Agree!
Not even Asics themselves did this. Absolutely mind-blowing. Thank you!
Thank you. I hope it was helpful. 🤙🏻
Amazing, enjoyed the breakdown towards the end of the high plate / low plate shoes, thats really darn useful to so many
I’m glad it was useful. The matrix isn’t complete but it should cover enough models to be able to find one frame of reference for most runners.
Can this channel just blow up already? Literally the best running content on TH-cam
Thank you for the support. Working hard on growing the channel for sure! 🤙🏻
I bought a pair of Metaspeed Edge Paris because of this video. I had no idea what the difference was but this explainer was perfect.
@paulcargill I’m glad this was helpful. Enjoy them! 🤙🏻
The matrix at the end was awesome, amazing and appreciate the effort you took to make it and put it together! Congratulations!!
I’m glad it was useful. I appreciate you watching! 🤙🏻
Your videos are unique. I like all this technical nerdy breakdowns.
It’s what I do here for sure! Glad they are enjoyable. 🤙🏻
The BEST video explaining these shoes. Thank you!
That’s what was aiming for. It really is a simple choice for me.
Dude this was incredible. By FAR the best explanation. You should teach (if you don’t already).
Ha. Partly that is why I started the channel… to educate… so win/win! 🤙🏻
One of the best videos on the Metaspeed series. But the best in categorizing the shoes based on industry similarities. It answered my own questions based on my best marathon performances and the shoes I’ve worn those days.
I'm happy this video help to contextualize the other shoes. 🤙🏻
This is, without doubt, the best video I've seen on either of these shoes and the differences between them. Anyone can tell you about the plate placement, but he breaks down the mechanics of what the plate placement really does. Great work.
Thank you. I'm glad this was useful. It really is a simple feel difference for these shoes...
Most informative comparison video I've ever watched about shoes. Absolutely brilliant! Thank you for helping me to decide on my London Marathon shoe, looks like the Edge is for me 🙌🏽
I’m happy to help. A great shoe for sure! Have an outstanding race. 🤙🏻
this should be watched by anyone before getting any shoes, man, you explained it very well,
I'm going to update and add to this for ALL super shoes, not just the Metaspeeds, sometime in May or June. Stay tuned.
Finally found a video to know the difference between sky and edge, great work ! Thank you
I’m glad this was helpful! 🤙🏻
What a brilliantly researched and delivered review!
Thank you. Thank you. 🙏🏻
Best breakdown to date on differentiating the low/high plate super shoes! Now I see why the AF and Adios Pro 3’s are my favorites for race day.
I’m glad it could connect the dots for you. Hopefully it was time well spent. 🤙🏻
Sounds like you had a great racing year in some great shoes. Congrats! Thank you for watching…I’m glad it was time well spent.
Thank you!@@SagasuRunning
This is by far the best video I have ever watched with regards to running shoes. Great explanation and I can now go away feeling much more informed. As someone who has hypermobility, I have never loved the Alphas and maybe this is why...they are too unstable. Thank you.
Ya, that would be my guess. Your biomechanics need to rigidity of the plate near the ground to give your a stable platform to work from.
Thank you for the kind words. 🤙🏻
Best comparison video out there for these two shoes. Thank you so much for making this!
Thank you for watching! Hopefully it was useful.
By far best explanation of the difference on TH-cam.
Thank you. I hope it helped! 🤙🏻
180-183 5km-10km pace (3:35-3:45)
I think my cadence is medium-high?
@@SagasuRunning 👍🏼 Thanks so much!
Brilliant Review. Only review that covers form fit and function with essential explanatory information to make an informed purchasing decision.
I hope it was helpful for you to pick the right one for you! 🤙🏻
The best explanation and video as well. Kudos
I hope it was helpful. 🤙🏻
Super informative and helpful!! Shocking no one else has been able to describe it this succinctly. Thanks so much
I’m glad it was useful. 🤙🏻
The best video on Paris series!!!
Thank you for watching. 🤙🏻
Great info. My favorite race day shoe is the alphafly 2, hoping the sky paris is close
Of the three AFs, the Sky is closest in feel to the AF2… you should feel right at home.
How would you compare the narrowness to Boston 12?@@SagasuRunning
Brilliant!!! Thank you!
What category would the New Balance Supercomp Trainer fit into?
Thank you. I hope it was helpful. Both SC Trainer versions are low plate configuration.
Best shoe review I’ve come across, clear, develops a higher level perspective and offers meaningful comparisons using the perspective . Thank you. 🙏
I'm glad it was useful and thank you for the kind words on the content! Plenty more on the way. Stay tuned. 🤙🏻
The best video so far I watched to describe which one to choose between sky or edge. You did a great job bro, well done!!
Thank you for watching. I hope it helped! 🤙🏻
Great video as always, the best video about the differences of these two shoes and the categoization of racing shoes in general
Thank you. Thank you. 🤙🏻
New to running. Very good educational review.
Welcome. I'm glad this helped out.
The BEST review…. All questions asked in one video…. Thanks!!
I’m glad this was useful. 🤙🏻
I have the magic speed 4 and looking forward to my first run in them. When I hit the lottery I’ll get one of these. I think I’m a heel striker naturally
Enjoy the MS4...
Well worth my time spent watching your video. Excellent job and extremely informative.
Thank you for watching. I’m glad you found this useful. 🤙🏻
Thank you for the kind words on the content. The low drop in the MSEP is noticeable… but it’s a great shoe and hopefully it works well for you.
Thank you! this has been been very informative. These shoes are very difficult to try in India because of low stock. Your video narrows down the choice for an over pronator like me.
Excellent. That was what I was trying to do! I'm glad it helped you decide. There are so many options out there.
very informative video, especially with the cross section explanation
I’m glad it was useful. Thank you for watching. 🤙🏻
Fingers crossed - the Sky's will fit the brief 😊
Keep posting such informative videos! Thank you 😊
I hope they work for you.
@dgcadogan That stability, never gets better. They are always a high and narrow platform. But that also is what makes them fast.
I had some difficulty choosing my marathon shoe this weekend and was very tempted to opt for the EP4s. Ultimately I selected my Superblast2s - I didn't want to risk using a plated shoe this time ... I'll have to do a full marathon in the EPs but another time 🙂
Anyway, hope you found my comments interesting 😁
BW.
I decided to buy the vaporfly 3 because they were on sale and 50 euros cheaper than both of these, I hope they fit me well
You can’t go wrong with a VF3… enjoy them. 🤙🏻

This has been one of the most useful running shoe tech videos ever. Thank you!

@@SagasuRunning edge Paris for me when it’s released in the UK.
Only the Sky is out in the UK?
@@SagasuRunning non as of yet. Is was meant to be the 4th March but disappeared off the ASICS website and now just says coming soon.
They explains why most UK reviewers are only covering the Sky and/or proclaiming it the best shoe already. How odd.
fantastic explanation and i love the addition of the graphics and the detailed information you've managed to add. thanks a lot for that
Thank you for watching. I’m glad it was useful. 🤙🏻
This was so useful, thank you very much. I love the Alphafly1 and the Adios Pro3, both for their bouncier/firmer characteristics. Using your info suggests the Sky should be a far safer bet than the Edge. Great video!
It definitely should be for your preference. Good luck with them. 🤙🏻
thank you for the in depth videos you make , verry informative!

Just found your channel. Loving the few videos I’ve watched. Awesome job👍🏼👍🏼
Glad you are here. Welcome. Hopefully you find more value here. 🤙🏻
Received an Edge this morning and it's much too small, got the same size as my Superblasts which actually fit big.... so definitely size up.
I had this problem too! Ended up going a size higher
Thanks for this, new sub here. Non-elite runner from the Philippines 🇵🇭.

I appreciate the support. Working on the growth thing here. Glad this helped you find the right one for you. 🤙🏻
@@SagasuRunning thanks! Looking forward to that!
Great explanation, low plate gang!
Low plate life! 😂
Great video . What do you think about the “popular wisdom” that a Heel striker should go for the edge ?
I don’t think it makes any difference. Neither the Sky or Edge are great for heel strikers. It still comes down to what type of feel you want off of the toe.
@@SagasuRunningwhat would you suggest instead?
Great video...thank you. Just bought the Edge Paris. Looking forward to trying it out as I loved the Edge +
I’ve been really enjoying my Edge Paris lately, even more than I did out of the box. They are a great shoe! 🤙🏻
Absolutely stellar explanation of the two types of super shoe. Thank you thank you thank you!
Thank you for watching. I hope it was useful! 🤙🏻
This has made the choice easy, I have a high cadence at any pace so ASICS says edge However i absolutely love the Aplhafly 2 (did not like the 3, although very fast), can’t run in Vaporfly’s at all. So sky it is :) should be much more comfortable for me
Yup, sounds like the Sky Paris is the one. Enjoy them. 🤙🏻
Great explanation of the differences between Edge and Sky's design.
Thank you. I hope it was helpful. 🤙🏻
Thank you for watching. I hope it was useful! 🤙🏻
Spectacularly informative and helpful video, the best I have seen on this topic. Just outstanding. Thank you!
I’m glad this was useful. Thank you for watching! 🤙🏻
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!
I hope it helped you make your decision. The Paris series are excellent shoes. 🤙🏻
I’m glad it was helpful! 🤙🏻
Thankyou for a brilliant video. Much appreciated sir.
I hope it was helpful! 🤙🏻
Top tier content. Love your comparisons of the top super shoes
Thank you. Thank you. 🙏🏻
That’s brilliant. Thanks. I’ve had 2 low plate shoes but don’t feel like I get a lot of benefit. Might try high plate and see if that makes a difference
Always worth a try, especially if you can try them on before you buy them. Usually it is a rather instant “yeh” or “neh” feeling.
@SagasuRunning Thank you. Just managed to buy Edge before sold out it my size based on Endorphin pro 3 curved low plate that I got on with.
That’s the right pairing… enjoy them!
Thanks for this breakdown, much appreciated!
Thank you for watching. I hope it was useful.
@@yiann1sk I’m glad you found my content then. Also… keep on top of that VPN! A very important thing to be aware of!
Was perplexed on the weekend ... Everything about my running is edge paris:
A) high cadence runner i average easy runs and well paced runs at 180, on tempo would be 190+ ..170 and under can get very awkward for me (not genetically gifted, got short legs)
B) got vaporfly and endorphin pro, shoes of which i love/run the most in.. they're the only carbon plate shoes i ever own
C) My stride length doesn't go beyond 1.00 m, it usually stays steady at 0.92
D) reasearched long enough, to decide the edge is for me, incl. this video
Went to the Asics store, to find i preferred the Sky.. though, ran only like 10 meters for both of them, not long enough to determine anything.. by definitely Sky over Edge, for me, not even close, by a long way..
I kinda do both bounce and roll.. definitely a roller, but with bounce sprinkled here and there when picking up the pace
Been doing more intervals and reps since my last comment, prepping into my favorite race now 4 weeks out.. I have a better picture of what I might need, and concluded, it's all about that bounce .. Gonna get the skys next week! (Too bad the all red are sold out, and it's now the less appealing (to me) "safety" yellow, but whatever)
Tks again
Sounds as if you are on your way here. Good luck! 🤙🏻
This was absolutely superb, thank you !

This would be for my son and he's a "stride runner" as opposed to cadence. But, IMO, he would benefit from more cadence so I would get the Edge shoe.
Neither distinction matters...it's about the feel he enjoys more. The two Metaspeed Paris shoes are nearly identical, beyond the plate position, so there really is little difference in this generation beyond feel.
Very clear. What would be better for short vs long distance racing distances?
Again, it depends on the feel you want. Both shoes are capable of the same things.
Amazing review!! Very detailed
Thank you. I hope it was useful for you. 🤙🏻
Gosh this is an absolutely fantastic explanation. Thank you!
I hope it was helpful! 🤙🏻

Being hype and hot sauce free sounds good. Thank you for the support! 🤙🏻
Hello, I’m a heel striker and I have the endorphin pro 4 but I’m not a fan of it for my running, should I try the Sky Paris?
Neither Metaspeed is great for a heel striker, not much outsole coverage on the heel. However, it doesn't matter which one. As I said in this video it comes down to the type of feel you like off of the toe.
Thank you for this simple and direct comparison. Subbed!
I’m happy to have earned the sub. Thank you. 🤙🏻
Really enjoyed the video. Do either of these options / super shoes affect heel strikers?
Generally speaking the Metaspeeds are ok at best for heel strikers. They are a very narrow platform, especially in the heel, with little rubber coverage.
That being said… either one will work. It still depends on the type of ride off of the toe you want.
Very nice video, I have the SKY TOKYO and was in doubt which one to pick but it looks like that for the PARIS generation I should move on to the EDGE version.
Yup, the Edge Paris is not exactly but it should feel familiar. Enjoy them.
