John Dawson "Johnny" Winter III (born February 23, 1944) is an American blues guitarist, singer, and producer. Best known for his late 1960s and 1970s high-energy blues-rock albums and live performances, Winter also produced three Grammy Award-winning albums for blues legend Muddy Waters. Since his time with Waters, Johnny Winter has recorded several Grammy-nominated blues albums and continues to tour extensively. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, he was ranked 63rd in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Johnny Winter has been a guitar hero without equal. Signing to Columbia records in 1969 called largest solo artist deal of it's time, Johnny immediately laid out the blueprint for his fresh take on classic blues a prime combination for the legions of fans just discovering the blues via the likes of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. Constantly shifting between simple country blues in the vein of Robert Johnson, to all-out electric slide guitar blues-rock, -- Johnny has always been one of the most respected singers and guitar players in rock and the clear link between British blues-rock and American Southern rock (a la the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.) Throughout the '70s and '80s, Johnny was the unofficial torch-bearer for the blues, championing and aiding the careers of his idols like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.
Today Johnny Winter is enjoying an unparalleled resurgence performing to sold out shows worldwide even after a long life full of honors and accomplishments such as a triumphant appearance at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Festival with Derek Trucks, Buddy Guy and Clapton that has been immortalized on the Emmy award winning DVD. In a ceremony with Slash presenting in Nashville, Gibson Guitars released the signature Johnny Winter Firebird guitar that has been his beloved trademark for years. A Live through the 70s DVD is a hit along with his Live Bootleg Series CDs that have all entered the Top 10 Billboard Blues charts. Two unique instructional DVDs have been produced by Cherry Lane/Hal Leonard to the gratitude of players around the world. Always one for special appearances he recently performed with the Allman Brothers at the Beacon Theater in Manhattan on the 40th anniversary of their debut
Winter produced three Grammy Award-winning albums by Muddy Waters, Hard Again (1977), I'm Ready (1978), and Muddy "Mississippi" Waters -- Live (1979). Several Winter albums were also nominated for Grammy Awards.[6] In 1980, Winter was on the cover of the first issue of Guitar World and in 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame. There was a character in the video game Heavy Rain named after Winter.

This is how I see it his playing is that actually better here than the final years of his life just slower but cleaner he could still bend notes. His manager at the time is he even worth mentioning overmedicated him just shy of death and stole him blind. Johnny was a kind man and a talent like no one I've ever seen or ever will see again. Seen him many times in 40 year span & cherished conversations with him also I just wish Paul Nelson could have came into his life earlier I think Johnny could still be with us with us he was simply the best of the best I miss him.

what is not impaired is that TONE! Johnny still sounds like Johnny here, however, having seen him 31 times, it's sad, last time I saw him in 1997 he was worse than this, I went outside and wept..

This is interesting..Johnny is fretting strings with his thumb that are not being strummed...additionally he frets other strings with his ring and middle fingers that are not being strummed at other times...seems very strange and inefficient..can someone explain why some guitar players do this?

Thumb over top can help mute the strings not in use, a common technique especially when using slide.
