    The Marine Corps does a quality spread for MOS selection. The number one grad will get what he/she wants regardless. To make this example simple, if you take out all the Lieutenants with flight contracts and law degrees and you have 210 left, those will be divided into thirds - top 70, middle 70 and bottom 70. To prevent all the top officers going into a single MOS, the Marine Corps also divides the available MOS's into thirds as well so the officers in the top third can't select all combat arms MOS's, which are what most want. So is you are at the top of your third, you will probably get what you want.

      I have heard it a little differently. 1st of top third picks, then 1st of 2nd 3rd, then top of the last third.
      The sucky thing is, if you are in the top 25 percent, you will be in the last 17 percent to pick.
      The Army used to do it a little differently with top 10% getting their first choice and then it cascaded down with limits on how many officer s branch could have

    I was prior enlisted before going to TBS... I was told to work hard and I could get the job I wanted (Intel)... Well by dumb luck I carried the radio during our very first field op. I tried to kick ass in that job. Well during each successive training field op my instructors said, hey you, you carried the radio before right! Carry it again. Well come time for MOS selection and I was really wanting Intel, but my instructors said, wait you carried the radio this whole time, you get to go to comm school (S-6). Moral of the story, inertia sucks ass and working hard does not really get you want you want.

      How could a prior enlisted get a chance getting pilot or some mos within aviation?

    • @Skyhawks1979
      @Skyhawks1979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Leanne_is_not_okay I was an enlisted A-4 Skyhawk Avionics technician. My Company Commander (Major) just happened to be an Aircraft Maintenance Officer (highly unusual). At MOS selection there were only two quotas for Aircraft Maintenance Officer, one in the middle third and one in the bottom third. I was high in the top third and was locked out of the MOS because a quota didn't exist in my third. The Company Commander pulled strings at Headquarters Marine Corps (Colonel level) and I was assigned the Aircraft Maintenance Officer MOS non competitively. I later served again in the Fleet with the Company Commander (now a Lt Colonel) and the Colonel that pulled the strings. They got a free beer from me every time I saw them at the O'club.

    You should have talked about the thirds and quality spread concept used at TBS. Officer MOSs are typically split into thirds and based on your class standing could have more impact on what you end up doing than any prior experience. Example: Thirty 0302 Infantry officer slots assigned to a TBS company could likely be split between the top 1/3, middle 1/3 and bottom 1/3. That way there is a quality spread based on performance at TBS. That concept typically applies to all MOSs, but prior service and a few other exceptions could be a consideration when final decisions are made and you are assigned an MOS. So, becoming an officer of Marines needs be the number one priority as well as being the best leader possible regardless of what MOS you end up in.

    '95 TBS and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the exact same method I describe below. At the time it didn't matter what 1/3 you were in really as long you were in the top of that 1/3 grouping (1/3, 2/3, 3/3) since HQMC did "quality spread" assignment of each MOS required that was sent down to TBS to fill for that class. If HQMC wanted 18 Infantry slots filled for that TBS class, 6 would go into each 1/3. So guys in the bottom 1/3 of the class still had a shot at getting infantry. We lined up in order of class rank 1-250ish(minus aviation and law contracts) and went into a room with the SPC's with a 3x5 card written down with our top 5 ranked. Whatever 1/3 you were in the SPC's would look at the card and put it on a nail on a 4x8 sheet of plywood with a matrix of MOS's. We did that 2 times for practice during TBS and after the final "straw pull," the SPC's met in private and may move people around within the 1/3 still for "needs of the Marine Corps." I was close to top of my 1/3 and got my first pick. I got what I wanted...but I would have been happy with any of my 5 selection as I just wanted to be there. If you wanted to be a Marine Officer, there was more to it than just your MOS, and I agree with the quality spread method so that high quality officers are spread across all of the MOS. Some people definitely got screwed though (perspective) but you deal with what you are dealt and drive on and be the best officer possible regardless, and you will be rewarded with many challenges throughout service. Regardless of MOS, the cream rises to the top, resulting in various positive opportunities that will be presented throughout service. Some guys/gals I knew moped around after MOS assignments, others sucked it up and drived on, as is expected. Yut and good video.

    Interesting because I've never seen anyone try and explain this. However, didn't really explain the grouping of thirds for Lt's & MOS slots. Where not only are the people ranked and divided into thirds but the allocation of MOS slots are as well. That is (or at least was as I've been out a few years) the ultimate determining factor. You can be a prior enlisted CI Marine, speak five languages, and have a PhD and be at the top of your class however, if the one slot for HUMINT isn't in the top third, you're doing something else for the next three & a half years. One of my best friends was maybe five slots ahead of me at the bottom of the middle third and got his 14th choice (we ranked all the MOS's we were eligible for), while I, at the top of my third (the bottom) got my second choice (only because my first choice only had two slots that were assigned to the top & middle third). The philosophy being that you're here to serve the needs of the Corps and a quality spread across the MOS's is infinitely more important than what you want.

    There’s NO accurate info here about Marine officer selection.
    Here’s the short version. You get a commission. Go to TBS. It’s a damn hard school and it lasts 6 months. You’re graded on everything, written tests, physical fitness tests, and leadership scores. The class is ranked 1 to whatever (about 250 officers in a class). Lawyers and aviators aren’t ranked. The class is split into thirds, and the available MOS’s are split into thirds. You pick starting with #1 in the top third, #1 in the middle third, #1 in the bottom third and so on. The bottom of the top third get screwed, as they did well but get the last few choices.
    Assignments based on prior skills are rare. There is always some wiggle room on available MOS’s so HQMC will always squeeze out a few more infantry slots as they go quickly.
    Everyone who gets a combat arms MOS gets a secondary MOS in support. They’ll serve one tour in combat arms followed by a tour in their secondary MOS.
    For those asking above about MARSOC and Special Operations, those are assignments not an MOS. You pretty much have to be infantry to get selected, just as you pretty much have to be infantry to become a general officer. That’s just how the Corps is.
    I was an officer of Marines 1985-1993. I got my first choice (tanks) at TBS. I went back after my first FMF tour to be on the staff at TBS.

    • @treyellis3
      @treyellis3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They wear the woodland and desert digital marine corps pattern (MARPAT). The woodland pattern is more densely woven for cold weather but they're both a cotton nylon fabric blend. They're also impregnated with permethrin insect repellent. The repellent is reapplied as needed for deployments and training. As far as the effectiveness of the patterns regarding concealment, they're both very effective in the appropriate environment.

    • @treyellis3
      @treyellis3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Typically, the woodland pattern is worn in the winter and the desert is worn in the summer.

    Hey General discharge, love your detailed videos. I’ve got a loaded question so bear with me. If your in an mos that has warrant officer opportunities, but can’t make a certain rank to qualify can you request a transfer to another branch to become a warrant officer? Example: I’m in services in the Air Force, but want become food service technician warrant officer. Since we don’t have warrants in the chair force this was the first thing that came to mind. Thanks for taking the time to review my comments and questions

      @@CarlosGonzalez-zl9vg Well artillery is being minimized so not entirely get rid of but I read somewhere that they are shortening enlistment terms for Marines who are in artillery now so there won't be a need for a whole lot of Officers is all I was trying to say.
