    0351 RIP button. The MOS was known as "Assaultman". We specialized in things that went boom. Claymores, C4, breaching, sabatage, anti personnel/vehicle rocket launchers, the SMAW and the Javelin missle launcher. The difference between rockets and missiles is missiles are self guided and rockets you have to aim. The power we had: to out rock-paper-scissor a f'ing tank. I suppose CAS and drones is also why the USMC got rid of tanks all together.

    I was in from ‘66 to ‘70, Vietnam in ‘67-‘68. In those days 0311 encompassed all jobs in the rifle squad, and every grunt could pick up any piece of gear and run with it. We were taking so many casualties with so few reinforcements that it had to be that way. Also, the typical squad was only around 9 or 10 snuffies, sometimes less. At times an entire rifle platoon was mostly PFCs and L/CPLs, with maybe four or five corporals and two Sergeants. But we definitely got by and made it work.

He had fought in World War II in the invasions of Guam and Iwo Jima and at the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War. My MOS was just a regular 0311 and then 0369 when I made Staff Sergeant.

      Non standard issue gear was common in my battalion (army) 10 years ago. As I was transitioning out, they started going back to everyone using the same equipment in cookie cutter fashion. I think that may have been rescinded by now. Those of us in weapons squads, especially we gunners, had even more freedom of choice due to a complete lack of standard gear being provided to us.

      @@michael2810 i doubt that is going to happen anytime soon. That doesn't make for pristine OERs and NCOERs. I left due to the micromanagement and careerist bullshit, which the army thrives on. It doesn't help that I was in 25th ID, where shit leaders are put to pasture. Most of the officers we had were more interested in chaptering out soldiers than they were anything else, apparently that makes you look like a beacon of discipline to field grades and such.

      @@Wotan-Born wet weather gear was something I never got to use, even if it was pissing rain (Hawaii). Then there was the MOPP boots, just more stupid shit we were accountable for. Oh and the pup tents, I never even had mine out of the case i think. Flashbang pouch, I never used that. We didn't get the boonies in garrison until we were jungle qualifying, then it became mandatory to have in the field because you could camouflage it. A lot of times these decisions were being made as personal preferences of the senior leadership, I'm sure the Corps is not far off from that. I had a 1SG get on my case because I used a BDS assault vest and he just either didn't like me or the vest. He himself would use the chicom ak mag vest, which just served to confuse me even more. I still have the vest, whereas the flimsy FLC set I was issued likely would've disintegrated by now.

I yelled his name and we locked eyes. He was wondering who was calling his name. I thanked him again for saving my life, we shook hands and what a beautiful family he had. It's crazy how many different jobs fall under the Army's 11B compared to the Corps. As a member of a battalion recon platoon we were trained in about 10 of these different MOS's. • @jmackinjersey1
      @jmackinjersey1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Keep in mind that a lot of these MOS are secondary. There are a lot of Marines with multiple Secondary MOS, making us the Swiss Army Knives. This is pretty much Corps wide, not only in the 03XX field. As a 3521 (diesel tech) I had several Secondary MOS both in the 35XX field, as well as other Oc Fields. I was also a Machine Gunner M240, as well as Training NCO and then Operations NCO. But along the way, we were also sent to CBRN school, as our BN Cmdr wanted at least 2 Marines in every platoon CBRN trained. So, with a lot of rotations/transfers, I was sending Marines to as many classes as possible. We would do a lot of other types of cross training, as in the late 90's and early 2000's, there were a lot less Enlisted Marines, but the mission tempo stayed the same. We had a lot of FAST Marines as well in and out of our BN, mainly our Company, since our CO was a Mustang and absolutely loved being involved in anything that was "HI Speed, Low Drag", and kept us on our toes, instead of covered in oil and grease.
      And then there are those of us that do a Lat Move into a completely different MOS all together and perform as much dedicated cross training into our new/next MOS as possible before even transferring over.
      The Marine Corps is the smallest branch, yet we do more than most, because we have a lot of training and flexibility.

    I graduated basic in the mid-1980's, and was assigned an 0300 MOS (infantry). After arriving at ITS (Infantry Training School) at Camp Pendleton, we were asked to select from the 0311, 0331, 0341 or 0351 occupations. While we were deciding this, several slots opened up for 0313 (LAV-crewman). After completing my ITS training, I was assigned an 0311 designation, but several schools had immediate openings, so my MOS changed to an 8151 (Marine Security Guard), where I attended Sea School and became a Sea Duty Marine.

    The Marines are a Corps. within a broader fighting force. The Corps. concept was implemented by Gen. Napoleon. That concept gives commanders the availability of maneuver absent orders. Basically to plug in gaps when they are identified or realized. Although small, but highly mobile in nature. The greater view is the Army. Large groups that are commanded to establish strongholds in the area of opportunity. Marines bring with them their own air/ground support, including battlefield intel.
