  • The following video is taken from my introductory Akkadian course where I introduce the idea of determinatives. A determinative is an orthographic sign used to indicate what type of word is being used.
If you have questions about determinatives and their usage in Akkadian, or anything else about this video, please post them in the comment below.

Never expected that level of emotions about Anaheim in a video about Akkadian writing conventions... Truly LA is beyond time.

The rant on the Anaheim/LA angels and charlie's angels were completely 100% true. lol
I also enjoy how the determinatives can be obvious. The symbol for the mountains look like mountains. The symbol for a city look like buildings, the sign for divinity resembles a star/sky/etc. Excellent work, please keep it coming.

Yeah, I about lost it when the California Angels went through like three name changes in as many years... and the 1970s Angels... oh yeah!

Very cool. What came to my mind was the Aramaic word for "angel" which is "malakha" meaning "messenger, celestial being and God's thoughts." Curious what the determinative would be for messenger and God's thoughts.

@@Dasyuhan well, _on paper_ I am proficient in Old Babylonian, colloquial Neo Assyrian, and Neo-to-Late Babylonian legal language; at the moment I'm practicing Standard Babylonian in its North Mesopotamian flavour.
_In practice_ I'm proficient in _the use of the tools I need_ to translate any edited text and even some manuscripts from OB times onwards-and if I can't get ahead, I am proficient in " _finding out where I could find out_ (sic) what I need".
