    - Orchestra: Berliner Philharmoniker
    - Choir: Chor der Deutschen Oper Berlin

    - Year of recording: 1965
Te Deum in C major, for soloists, chorus, orchestra & organ, WAB 45, written in 1881-1884.
    00:00 - I. Te Deum laudamus
05:59 - II. Te ergo quaesumus
    08:45 - III. Aeterna fac
10:12 - IV. Salvum fac populum tuum
    16:11 - V. In te, Domine speravi
Although they speak much of the same language as the symphonies and masses, Anton Bruckner's other choral works tend toward a certain conciseness, being epic by implication. This can be said of his Te Deum, arguably the crown of his sacred music. Bruckner singled out this work as his own personal favorite, referring to it as "the pride of my life." It is certainly one of the most positive, joyous, and compelling ever to come from his pen and is believed to have been the last music of his that he attended in live performance. Composed from 1881 to 1884, it is contemporary with the Seventh Symphony, with which it shares some very significant thematic material. The Te Deum reflects the contemporary frame of mind of its composer, being one of elation and thankfulness for his long-delayed success and acceptance. The then-recent performance of the Fourth Symphony by the Vienna Philharmonic under Hans Richter had been the breakthrough for Bruckner.
As with the later Psalm 150, there are moments in the Te Deum where barbaric opulence coexists with intense spirituality, a quality harkening back to the Baroque arts.
    - The work opens in blazing C major, propelled by a powerful open-fifths motive in the strings. The chorus and the rest of the ensemble enter as the music moves through processes and modulations distinctly Brucknerian.
    - The following F minor section, "Te Ergo," is serene yet imploring in nature, featuring an expressive tenor solo and a solo violin which can hardly fail to bring to mind the "Benedictus" from Beethoven's Missa Solemnis.
    - The central section, "Aeterna Fac," is in Bruckner's favored key of D minor and is almost apocalyptic in its fury. Propelled by a rhythmic device similar to one used in the Sixth Symphony and String Quintet, it draws on the full resources of the chorus and orchestra before coming to an abrupt unresolved cadence.
    - The "Salvum Fac Populum" section follows essentially as a repeat of the "Te Ergo," this time with women's voices accompanying the tenor. This leads to the "Per Singulos" which recalls the fervor and energy of the opening.
    - The overall symmetry of the work is now apparent, but the final section is an apotheosis built entirely on the words "In Te Domine Speravi. Non confundar in Aeternum" ("In Thee, Lord, I have trusted. Never let me be confounded"), words which form a motto for Bruckner's life work. The section culminates in a joyous fugue and is followed by an intensely haunting and impassioned chorale, the latter of which would later be used to great effect in the slow movement of the Seventh Symphony. The opening string figure returns as the full ensemble carries the Te Deum to a terse yet powerful conclusion.
Bruckner dedicated the piece "to God in gratitude for having safely brought me through so much anguish in Vienna".

Bruckner was always very harsh on himself and critical of his work. But if he was alive today, and attended a performance of his own work, he would flat out cry with happiness and surprise at the standing ovation. He would know that he actually DIDNT suck as a composer.

It's rare to hear a piece recorded in the 60's sound so crisp. Immaculate performance and recording quality.

If Bruckner uses this kind of musical language when putting such harsh and intimidating music to such devotional words, I am further convinced of the Symphonies' similar devotional qualities when similar music is at hand. Harsh, minor key, and loud does not necessarily mean tragic and apocalyptic! Especially so in Bruckner. It seems like he is portraying divine power!- Daniel

Jochum's performance may be 54 years old but it's hard to imagine it ever being bettered. The definitive Bruckner Te Deum.

If you love Anton Bruckner, than you should really listen Gloria from his Grosse Messe (Mass no. 3). It is so majestic as this Te Deum :)

There is something so divine and eternal about this masterpiece! As if people could listen to this for thousands of years to come and it would never ever fail to impress!
Music usually makes you see pictures and sequences through your inner eye. Bruckner is different though. As if he goes straight for your strongest and purest emotions, giving the consciousness a glimpse of what even your inner eye isn't able to visualize.

Another interesting thing about this piece not mentioned by the uploader is Bruckner's remark "I will present to God the score of my Te Deum, and He will judge me mercifully." Bruckner really thought highly of this work, and for good reason.

Omg this is awesome!!! Bruckner was way ahead of his time, about 100 years. His music feels so modern and right today! I wish he would have known how appreciated he would become.

On his copy of the score, Gustav Mahler crossed out "für Chor, Soli und Orchester, Orgel ad libitum" (for choir, solos and orchestra, organ ad libitum) and wrote "für Engelzungen, Gottsucher, gequälte Herzen und im Feuer gereinigte Seelen!" (for the tongues of angels, heaven-blest, chastened hearts, and souls purified in the fire!)

According to Hans Roelofs' critical discography, out of more than 100 performances of Bruckner's Te Deum, Eugen Jochum's performance of 1965 remains still the reference performance.

+olla-vogala When Bruckner was unable to finish his 9th symphony, he suggested that this Te Deum be used as the 4th movement. This has been tried, but seems not to have caught on.

I didn't know that. Are there any recordings at all where it is used as 4th movement?

    • @anbruck1
      @anbruck1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+olla-vogala The more than 100 recordings of Bruckner's Te Deum are mainly added to a Bruckner's Mass or other religious works, less often to a symphony (mainly No. 7). See Roelofs' critical discography of the Te Deum ( www.brucknerdiskografie.nl/php/index.php?pag=100 ). I am not aware of a recording, in which it would be specifically used as the 4th movement of Symphony No. 9.
