    It seems like the filter & force carb routine is a winner!

      Absolutely, the only change would be a counter pressure filler instead of the LastStraw. We are going to
      Start making 7 gallon batches too so its worth all the time filtering!

    Hi folks, great show, you are starting to get a good rhythm going. two question, what was the abv of that 1 gal/6.7% after adding the juice.Do you think filtering wil stop fermentation after back sweetening. Cheers

    • @CideryFromScratch
      @CideryFromScratch  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! It means a lot :) By adding the additional apple juice, we dropped the ABV to just under 4%...knowing this, we will plan on starting with a higher gravity or adding slightly less juice in the future. We want to keep the ABV between 5-7%. The main reason we have decided to start filtering our Cider is to remove that inactive yeast, sooooo ideally Fermentation wont be able to start again after we add the sugar! However, we will find out in the next few months as some of these bottle sit on the shelf!

    Will you have an opportunity to blend with some bitter sharps and/or tannic juices, or are there generally no sources for those juices for the home brewer? I know we have some orchards here in NY that offer juice in quantity for fermenting, but I can't say that they're offering any specific cider varieties. I really need to get my feet wet and do as you guys are! Thanks for the effort you're putting into this content!

      Hey Andy! Great question and a problem we are actively working to solve. We have a few contacts for Michigan orchards that claim they can provide specific juice and we plan on reaching out to them in the coming weeks. Worst case, we know of an orchard in VA that has juice but i dont think they ship……in other news we just ordered 30 cider apple trees for the spring of this year so we look forward to experimenting with them :)

      I can't wait to hear what varieties you chose! I'll have to send you a list of varieties I have (158 apple cultivars and 20 pear at last count this past fall). I'll do my winter pruning late Feb/early March, if you're interested in scion to trial varieties let me know. I have a lot of multi-use and cider varieties. Andy S

      @@southernadirondackoutdoors We are struggling to find large quantities of Cider Apple specific trees at the East Coast nurseries so for this spring we grabbed some golden Russet and Porters Perfection, the goal is to get some hands on experience maintaining these trees prior to planting the other 2,000 at the orchard next year! Then if all goes well, we will try our hand at grafting from them. We would love to hear about the apples you have, how many acres are you working? Scion in the future would be amazing, we would love to test out some heirloom varieties - David :)

      Maggies is a 12 acre lot and the orchard footprint is probably 6 acres of that. There's an Orchard playlist on the channel that will give you a feel for the space I'm working with and the work we've put into it so far. Over 600 trees already planted out and 48 remaining trees to be moved to the orchard from the nursery bed.

    just an observation, once you have proved cider is going into waste container isnt it just as easy to turn the pump off (to reduce spill risk) place into new empty container and start pump,

      Hi Kev, thanks for the feedback! We are newer to the filtration process so any thoughts are appreciated. We will give your suggestion a try and see what happens......the only thought is that turning the pump off will cause a loss in pressure and potentially add some air into the lines? we were worried about negatively effecting the pump and cider with Air

    • @kev22263
      @kev22263 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CideryFromScratch Im unsure where the air would enter the system, as you have created a open loop and purged with water, therefore the air has been purged from the initial dry system, just my thought, and if the suction line is submersed all the time then you have eliminated induced ingress of air. I dont use filters and im new to the hobby but we do use many a different pump for work applications. Does the pump have a non return valve built into the pump and or a bypass for over pressure? If a bypass is fitted then you can valve the suction and discharge leg and close when flushing is complete, this will also reduce induced air ( my opinion only) great vid keep up the good work love it
