Winter Pruning Our Micro Apple Orchard
มุมมอง 30610 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this episode, we take advantage of the weather and decide to prune our 30 apple trees in our micro orchard. Last year, we planted this orchard to get hands-on experience with tending to trees before we plant 2,000 trees this coming Spring. In our micro orchard, we have 10 Porter's Perfection apple trees and 20 Golden Russet apple trees. We take you with us and show everything we have learned...

How is the calculation made so that 32 oz of apple can supply the proper amount of priming sugar for 5 gallons of fermented cider?
Had some of this on the brew master tour and omg it’s night and day different than any bud that hit the stores
If I decide to plant this way can I pull it with the mower using a rope while the wife walks behind the broadcast spreader? We have 17 acres. Of course we'll take a break after the first 10 acres so she can make me a sammich.
Hi the fence looks really good. Can I make a suggestion my Father was a Farmer in NZ and he taught me a excellent piont and this can apply to any stock fence he always strained a barb or sometimes a plain wire as first wire about 4 inches above ground ( this is also used as your gide to drive or dig in Posts in a straight line ) , then fix your Netting wire above. Now this does two important things Firstly - stock especially sheep won't try to work there way under the fence over time. Secondly- this strand wire will keep your more valuable Netting above grass more and will greatly extend the Netting's useful life. Hope you consider this on your next fence as it's a proven good practice learned from experience.
You're missing the bottom of the blade 😓
Did you have to cold crash prior to filtering your cider?
Does not adding more apple juice after racking not cause a second ferment which could cause exploding bottles ..... there could still be live yeast
Very cool. I don't think I've ever seen anyone use apple juice as a priming sugar before. I like it.
Works like a charm! Thanks for watching :)
Fun fact: the French word for potato is pomme de terre, which means “apple of the earth” Made me think of that when you were talking about your golden russets
We found it cranks a lot easier if you quarter your apples before putting them in your chipper mill.
Great idea!!
Was this the factory edge or had it already been sharpened at some point?
Nice. Will be experimenting with G890 and G214 in the tropics.
Excellent!! How soon do you expect fruit?
@@CideryFromScratch My guess would be 2-3 years. Since I'm in the tropics, i mostly graft on seedling rootstocks. I currently have 2 g890 and 6 g41, which i got earlier this year. The g890 rootstocks got grafted with lady williams while the g41 rootstocks got grafted with enterprise and lady williams. Also, I just place my order for 10 G214 on the cumminsnursery last week.
@@MaluseedGrowers very cool, thanks for sharing. We always like to hear what others are doing. Is this your first order from Cummins Nursery?
@@CideryFromScratch 1st order was back in January. Both G890 & G41.
Beautiful. I’ve been following your journey ! Ive been very happy with my trees on Geneva rootstocks.
Thanks for watching and following along!! Happy to hear about Geneva rootstock success from others
What nursery did you use to get your trees?
Two NY nurseries - Cummins nursery and Wafler nursery
Everything looks incredible!
Thank you!!
I signed up for chip drop and never got any. I know some people in my area call arborists directly and they are happy to drop off wood chips. 🤷
Hey Dan, hope you are having a good fall!! Free chips have indeed been hard to find, we have called a few places and either we are too far away or they actually sell the wood chips - my buddy lives a few hours away and he’s going to start bringing us some every few months but he can only haul 8 yards at a time!
@@CideryFromScratch I’m honestly surprised more people aren’t looking to get rid of wood chips.
@@SustainableDan agreed!!
Lookin' good! I was wondering what root stocks you had chosen. I have one and a half rows left to plant out and have been putting new varieties on G.214 with the thought I may do some high density plantings. If you want any scion wood let me know, I can send you a list of what I have available when I do my winter pruning in Feb/March. I have many cider varieties. David, you should definitely do some grafting. If you're going in that direction, be sure to get your root stock orders in soon. I'd recommend Willamette Nursery and CopenHaven Farms, they're both great to deal with for purchasing root stocks. Oh, almost forgot, where is the brew-house going, on the hill overlooking the orchard? ;)
Thank you! We wanted to start with high density for the early yields, we may plant more free standing in the years to come depending on the space we have available. Thank you for offering us your scion wood, we are all set for this coming year but for the 2026 plantings I will definitely take you up on that offer. Do you have any russet varieties? Appreciate the nursery recommendations 😁 You are correct, the cidery is going just past the orchard in the rolling hills area! We are finishing the driveway now and should be able to start construction in the spring
Great walk, things are coming along well. Can you use legumes as a weed control, here in Aus we have some non-climbing varieties, good for trees. Carboard does work well with wood chips, but can keep the ground dry under it. Cheers
Thanks for the insight, love the idea! We have some Red clover that I want to plant but the rain has been non-existent! Hope to plant more in the spring! Thanks for the support 😃
Great progress guys. I recommend against cardboard - it's a haven for voles. Ask me how I know. Have a good and mild winter!
Thanks for the insight. What do you think about cardboard underneath wood chips? Same issue ??
@@CideryFromScratch Yes same issue. Think of a safe haven for voles. We use sharp gravel with no cardboard. It works pretty well but a pain for weed management. Other orchards around us just maintain a large population of cats, which I suppose could be effective until the snow flies. I also recommend getting hold of the latest issue (fall?) of the NYS Horticultural Society Bulletin. Great article on the economics of various rootstocks in organic systems. G41 looks like a clear winner.
How did broadcasting work out? Did you get decent germination? Anything learned?
Thanks for the comment. The growth was very spotty because of the lack of rain. I definitely want to try and do it early in the Season so we get more of the May/June rains!
@CideryFromScratch Thanks. Thinking of trying the same thing to improve soil on a small area before starting a garden.
Things are looking good.
Things are coming together :)
Always enjoy seeing your progress!
Thank you for the support!!
How much Go Ferm did you add? It looked like a tablespoon but I want to make sure I'm doing it correctly. I'm in the early stages of researching how to make home made hard cider. Thanks!
Also, does the bottling sugar carbonate the cider? Thanks again
@@josh-d2z hi Josh, I usually add 1.2grams of goferm per gallon of cider. The added sugar after fermentation is indeed meant for bottle carbonating the cider. The yeast will convert that sugar into CO2
@@CideryFromScratch Wonderful! Thank you for the response
@@josh-d2z happy to help
Great video! Thanks for answering all the questions below. It was very helpful as I had a lot of similar questions. I live in Phoenix and the indoor temperature this time of year is between 75-80 degrees. Is this too warm or is it ok? What is the ideal temperature?
Thanks for the kind words!! We are happy to help the community :) The lower the temperature the better. Lower temps slow down fermentation and help develop a more complex cider. However, you can make cider in a vast range of temperatures. You just need to pick a yeast that can tolerate your fermentation temps. So 75-80 deg is acceptable as long as the yeast can withstand it
@@CideryFromScratch Thank you for your help! I'm planning on making my first batch of cider this weekend. I'm going to start by making 2.5 gallons in case I screw up. I have a packet of champagne yeast rated for 1-6 US gallons. Would you recommend using the whole packet or just half? And based on your answer, how much yeast nutrient should I use (it recommends 1-tsp per gallon? Thanks again...Cheers!
@@DaveH-d5b sounds like a good plan! I would follow the manufacturer recommendations and then tweak your methods as needed in future batches. For champagne yeast I usually add 1.2grams per gallon of cider and just 1gram of nutrient per gallon.
@@CideryFromScratch thank you! For bottling, can you use growlers with screw on tops or is that not recommend? I noticed you used bottle caps for yours.
@@DaveH-d5b flip tops, corks, or caps are the preferred method - we have tried reusing twist top wine bottles but the seal wasn’t good enough
Is it at all possible to back sweeten this recipe, instead of the 32 oz of apple juice, a different fruit juice.. Such as blueberry? Would that ruin the carbonation that the apple is going to create? Or perhaps its not even enough juice, (32 oz) to make a taste difference?! Either way.. Excited to be bottling my first batch of cider!
Congrats on your first batch - you can use any juice to carbonate with as long as it has sugars and doesn’t have preservatives. However, be careful though because this is not for back-sweetening. The left over yeast in your finished product is going to eat all the sugars when they are added to the bottles and left to age.
How did you figure out how much apple juice to add for cabonating the bottles?
I’m not sure if our way is the right way but it seemed to work, we found how many ounces of juice we needed to get 25g of sugar per gallon of cider. This was for carbonation not for back-sweetening. Hope this helps!
It does. Just wondering what your math was to figure out. Iam making my first batch and would rather use apple juice than other sugars thanks for your time.
You will continue to press for 100 years.
If not us, definitely our kids :)
Your micro orchard is absolutely beautiful ❤
That burning ring of fire.
FIIIIRE! 🔥
HOT FIRE 🔥
This is insane!!! The drone footage really shows just how huge of an operation this was. You go guys!
Thanks Dan! Lots of great memories made for sure! 🍎🍏
looking good.
Thank you! Cheers! Something a little different
So will you buy rootstock and use your starter orchard for the scion wood?
Yes absolutely!!! We were busy planting about 2000 trees this year however we plan on grafting from our micro-orchard next year!!
Informative…
Holy apples! The trees are looking great!
It’s crazy….we only got one apple last year and now we have tons hahhahaha
Did ya try the apples? 😊
Not yet..but we are looking forward to trying many this fall
Fantastic video! So happy to watch your guys grow your future.
Thank you, Pete! It’s fun to see our hard work start to pay off with some apples!!🍎
Our crabs yield heavy yet grow as fast as the others. I think the net apple load (total weight) is not as bad as it seems. Why not try not thinning a few and see if they keep up with the others. Our experience here (varieties golden hornet, robert's, wickson) shows they do. We are in upstate NY.
Very cool insight! Thanks for sharing, i definitely will try that, especially if it seems to be working for you guys. I also noticed that we lost quite a few of the apples to wind so maybe they have a good natural selection process
