- Our new silverback, Mbeli, is now being housed with the Chew Crew full-time. They continue to do well, learning how to act as a cohesive group. With gorillas, animal care professionals know a troop is doing well based on key social behaviors. Spending time in proximity to each other, sharing food, and lots of relaxed lounging are positive signs we see frequently with Mbeli's new gorilla family! I really like how low-key and subtle gorillas are with each other. The whole not looking at the male directly, and walking near him but not directly up to him, and him doing the same.
Its exactly where the melanin community gets their habits from. That's why they get so obsessive, aggressive and belligerent when you look at them, often escalating into shootings
With gorillas they only make eye contact if they want to mate or threaten. Obvs if a female makes eye contact with a male it's to mate for a male to make eye contact with another male its a threatening dominant thing. They actually say if you ever go travelling and stumble across a silver back you make yourself as low as possible and put your head down... for the reasons I've just said above x

Oh my goodness! I loved the way the three female gorillas huddled up and had a conversation about him, but that last moment when he reaches over and pulls the other gorilla away from the edge. That was so sweet and so gentle. He’s gonna make a great dad, but of course he’s got to mate with one of these lucky ladies first.😉 any bets on how soon that might happen?🫢😉

You can see a lot of human traits in how the male gorilla acts. He's being totally non-threatening with his body language, keeps his shoulders low, doesn't flex at all. Never stands on his hind legs or bares his teeth. When the other females are huddling wondering what to do he doesn't invade their space and sits down with his hands and arms down. He lets them approach him, they come 90 he comes ten. Dudes at the club might learn a bit from this guy about how to approach women.
well I doubt many women at a club would approach a man first. especially a quiet one whose keeping his distance.

A dangerous situation.
I heard that one time in a zoo a male gorilla struck a female so hard with his arm that he killed her.
That's what can happen when they are first introduced -
the males are just so powerful that they can kill with one blow.
They do these introductions very carefully now, give the gorillas plenty of time to get to know each other through a barrier before ever letting them physically interact with each other. Most zoos that have gorillas know a lot more about their natural behaviours than zoos used to, and watch for cues telling them it's safe to let them in the same space together, while always giving the females the option of "escaping" if they want to.

Is that a young male at the end? The head shape looked like that of a male and the mouth looked like it was sticking out more like that of a male. Looked a bit confrontational at first but then the young one backed down and Mbeli accepted him and pulled him away from the edge.
No, it's a female; all the other gorillas in the group are females. I think that one is the biggest and oldest female.
He was all sweet and gentle until it's time for the boom boom. Then the gorilla strength is useful when hanging from trees, tossing logs and generally being the king stud that he was put there to be.

That was a female, not a young male. This troop contains only Mbeli and his four females. There are no other males.

Never mind I found out that there is a female named M'beli who is the sister of Shabani and Haoka in Taronga Zoo. So, I answered my own question. LOL This was such a great Video. Thank You!
Does the "Troop" consist of 1 male and all the rest females or are there multiple males in the "Troop". If there are multiple males, do they work together OR is there a competition to determine hierarchy?
I believe in this troop, there is one male, Mbeli, and three females who have recently joined him…😊

@@danielvalenzuela8814 From the previous videos I’ve watched from the Cincinnati Zoo, initially Mbelli was the only gorilla in the enclosure. They were allowing him to get familiar with it before they introduced the females. They indicated that 3 females would be brought in to join Mbelli. It’s possible that another male could be there, but I did not see him. I believe this video introduces the 3 females…😊
This troop with Mbeli has 4 females - Gladys, Chewie, Elle & Mona
I have seen bachelor troops in some zoos. I believe San Diego has one. There would have to be just due to the numbers of males and females. Hopefully someone that works with these animals will pop in with an answer.
