    What kind of bedding do you use for your chickens? 🐓🐓
    ⚠️Warning!⚠️
    Video will show chicken 💩.
    (If you're easily offended by chicken 💩, you probably shouldn't be raising chickens!)
    I used pine shavings for years with my chickens. I was annoyed that even after cleaning out the coops - I would still collect dirty eggs. That's when I discovered hemp bedding!
    Aside from cleaner eggs and faster composting, there are other benefits to hemp that I didn't mention in the video.
    Hemp bedding is a LOT less dusty than pine shavings. And less dust makes it easier to breathe for you and your chickens.
    From a sustainability standpoint, hemp renews itself annually. Pine trees can take years before they are ready to be harvested.

    I just started hemp bedding last year with 18 hens. Absolutely love it. No smelly coop any more and it last longer than the pine shavings and the poop dries up. Worth every penny in my book over all

    Ordered my hemp just yesterday. Received notice today that delivery is scheduled for Friday. Awesome!! If it doesn’t work out, all the folks from the office want to come by my place for a little hemp party. LOL!!!!

      I'm glad that you discovered hemp bedding. I'm sorry for the late reply but it looks like its been a month since you have purchased the hemp bedding. What are your thoughts about the hemp? Are your chickens loving it like mine are?

    Love hemp bedding. It's not just for chickens. It's great for small rodent bedding also. Greatly reduces odor, because of it's drying qualities I only have to clean their cages once a week as opposed to twice a week, also it is safe for their respiratory systems. Hemp is great bedding and it's made my life as a small pet keeper much easier. I only started using it this year, and I'm slowing phasing out the use of Aspen shavings and going 100% with Hemp. I'm very happy I found your site and that you sell Hemp bedding at a a reasonable price. I and my nose thank you!

      That's great news Lee! Thanks so much for letting people know that its not only for chickens. It's funny, it started off as a better bedding for horses. And then chicken people discovered how amazing it is. And now other small pet owners are discovering how great the hemp bedding is! I know people who have used it for their snakes. And I think it's great that it can be used with small rodents! I spoke with the vendor and the only thing that he doesn't recommend with hemp bedding is pet turtles. I'm not sure who uses bedding with turtles but I thought it was worth mentioning.

    I've used hemp and like it, but where I live it's $9 for a cubic foot ($87 for a 44 lb bale of Aubiose shipped that makes 9.5cubic ft) and pine shavings are $1 per cubic foot. I can't afford hemp with that price difference! I don't think hemp lasts 9 times as long...

      Thank you so much for your feedback! I agree that hemp bedding can be expensive. At the moment, most of the hemp bedding is produced overseas and shipped into the U.S. Fingers crossed, there will be more US grown/ manufactured hemp bedding in the future that will drive the costs down.

    I used to use pine shaving for my chickens....
    That was until I learned that pine shavings are toxic to chickens and can kill baby chicks😥.
    I purchased hemp bedding and will be trying out with my new chicks.

      Pine shavings do not kill chicks. I use pine. It’s CEDAR that is toxic

    I have tried both, the hemp is nice but expensive so I'm going to stick with the pine until I can grow some hemp and make my own bedding.

  • @WelcometoChickenlandia

    I REALLY want to try the hemp bedding. Does it smell good? The thing I like about the pine is that it's so good about cutting down the ammonia.

    • @CityChickAtl
      @CityChickAtl  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In my opinion it smells better. Pine shavings have a neutral order to me (maybe it's just the ones that I use??). The hemp bedding acts like a wicking material and sucks out the moisture from the 🐔💩. I have never noticed an ammonia order ever - but we are pretty diligent on cleaning out the coops every week. There are some people who use the deep litter method with the hemp. I'm not comfortable with recommending it but there are videos out there on how to do it!

    • @WelcometoChickenlandia
      @WelcometoChickenlandia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CityChickAtl I used to do deep litter before I had ducks in the coop. Now I have to really stay on top of it, lest the ammonia creep in!

      I don't notice a lower level of ammonia smell and I have to change my pine shavings out every week because it's nasty smelling. And my 10 week old girls are dust bathing in it too. Yuckkkkko! I just spent $50 on a 33lb bag but if it works, it will be so worth it.

    Do you do Deep Litter with either or both?

    • @CityChickAtl
      @CityChickAtl  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is a great question. I don't use the deep litter method. I worry about the ammonia build up and I'm a little OCD about having my coops cleaned out. I like the idea of the deep litter method, and how it can keep the coop warmer in the winter but it's just not for me. The deep litter method works great for some people, I'm just not one of them.

    • @desertdee1

      I read where people that used coffee grounds regretted it. Most said it was a mistake. Since I have no intentions of using it, I didn't pay much attention to why they didn't like it.
