    Today, Matt and Amber add a new hemp layer to the hen house. The immediate impact of what hemp does for the deep litter system is truly amazing! It's a great way to reduce smells and keep your chickens happy!

    Thank you for doing a short version of a deep litter video, I appreciate the brevity.

    I know you don’t have to do it, but I screen my hemp once a year. I have a garden. I use a piece of 1/2” hard wear cloth fencing. I’ve use the same hemp for four years and never had a problem. I add some to cover up the chicken waste every so often. Mix it up. And in the summer screen it.

    Another great informative video. Welcome, Amber, to Carolina Coops. Yes, I really like the new hemp too, the lack of dust makes it a super bedding. What a wonderful idea to have a real coop at the shop, complete with chickens. Can't wait for the first eggs to appear. Smiles from Wyoming.

    Yep! I just removed our deep litter of hemp after a year. I could have left it for a while longer, but decided to pull it out and put as an underlayer to more compost in my garden beds. We have the same size coop.

    Stopped by your place in NC yesterday to see this coop, and stuck my head inside just to check out the smell. Not bad at all and it had been raining for the last couple days! This thing is the Cadillac of coops!

    Couple questions:
    1. How much of the hemp should you be adding when needed? Just enough to cover, 1-2”, more than that? My hen house is 6’x12’ for example
    2. Do you recommend turning the hemp with a pitchfork every so often, or just adding on the top only?
    Thanks!

      We recommend about 4-6 inches to start and you can add to that over the years. Our coops have 12" deep litter beds. You find it will break down over time. You can turn it every so often, it's not required, but some people do and that's fine too.

    Has anyone had the problem of leaving their nesting boxes closed for too long and now the chickens just lay on the ground everywhere?

    What is the white material you have in the bedding area? I heard from another video but forgot, it is great :)

    Hi! Can I use this in my duck coop?

    Does this material/method work in humid environments as well?

    • @CarolinaCoopsVideos
      @CarolinaCoopsVideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      yes absolutely. Because the hemp keeps the droppings so dry, so humidity is not an issue at all.

    Hi, a question for you. I already have pine shaving started in my deep litter, can I just add hemp over it when the time comes to add more?

    • @CarolinaCoopsVideos
      @CarolinaCoopsVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes you can. Or you can remove the pine and start with just the hemp. Either way is fine. thanks for your question.

    About how much does one bale of the hemp yall sell weigh?

    • @CarolinaCoopsVideos
      @CarolinaCoopsVideos  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi. Because hemp is a natural fiber the weight can fluctuate. It can weigh anywhere between 28-33 lbs depending on the shipment. The drier hemp will weigh less but be even more absorbent. The weather conditions as it grows and is harvested will effect the weight on the hemp in the packaging.
