Hemp bedding for chickens is game changer when it comes to your backyard chickens. We've been using hemp bedding in our main coop for over a year at CityChick.
One of the downsides to hemp bedding can be the price. So what's a backyard chicken owner to do? There are ways to make the hemp bedding last longer. We receive a lot of questions about the deep litter method. We don't use the deep litter method at CityChick. I know many people who use the deep litter method with success, but we choose not to. If done incorrectly, the deep litter method can lead to ammonia build-up. I prefer to clean out our coops every week. If you don't want to clean the coop out every week, you can stretch the use of the hemp bedding by using the method that I talk about in the video.

Great tip. I use one of those larger metal ones. Work a bit better for me. I pick it up every morning. No smell. No mites and no mold. So wortth it in the long run.

Hemp bedding is a game changer. I have it in the coops and in the run. I pick up the poop daily and put it and the excess hemp in the compost heap. Hemp is nitrogen rich, unlike wood and it composts down quickly. Good for the hens. Good for the garden. Win win.

I finally made the switch to hemp bedding and I'm really liking it so far!

Oh my gosh! I'm so glad that you are enjoying it so far. I can't even tell you the difference it made with my composting. The pine shavings would just sit in my compost for what seemed to be forever!

Oh my goodness, I LOVE your hemp bedding and started scooping it with a large litter scoop about 6 months ago. It makes a HUGE difference in how long it lasts. Thank you CityChick!!

Built my own coop, and took delivery of my four birds Labor Day weekend. Did lots of research on coop bedding because I have no idea what I’m doing. I went with hemp after watching the product reviews on City Chick. Awesome!!! It’s all I’ll ever use. I clean my coop daily; it’s just so easy to do that way. Absolutely no odor. Very little dust and very clean eggs. I need help, though, on what would make a good bedding for the run itself. Suggestions anyone??

I got my hemp bedding a couple days ago, but now the hens won’t go in the henhouse at all! They act terrified of it. Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance!!

@@rebeccalatham8670 Hey, Rebecca. This is a new one. You may try putting a favorite treat inside the coop just to bait them in. My girls love a slice or two of a pumpkin or a sliced tomato. Keep us posted on your progress!!

Thanks for the quick reply! I’ll give it a shot tomorrow. I had to toss everyone in and lock them up tonight😬 They immediately jumped to the roosting bars!

@@rebeccalatham8670 You’re welcome!! That may be all it takes. My birds came to me from a shavings and wood chip coop environment. They were crazy as a bat in a bell tower, but never hesitated with the coop. They were delivered to me after dark, so it was their roost time. I did just what you did. I locked them up in the coop, and we’ve never looked back. Let us know how it goes.

Roger Knight thanks for the advice. I just threw in a bunch of cherry tomatoes, their fav, and they’re not having it. They think the floor is still lava. I have a funny video of it😂

Do the chickens toss the hemp out of the nesting boxes? I used to buy nest pads but they would break them into pieces and kick them out of the nesting boxes.

Yes. Mine want straw for nesting. I’ve started layering with the hemp being the absorbent layer below the straw. The like building up their nest with the straw so mine are getting both. Straw only is stinky and not very absorbent but w the hemp and some clay granules added it does well for nesting.

Are you ever going to have an option to pick up hemp bedding from you directly? We are out of your delivery area.

Hi Susan - GREAT question. I do have a pickup option available for folks that live in the state of GA that aren't in the delivery area. Please e-mail me at Heath@citychickatl.com or you can call me at 470--375-9969 and I can give you more details about the hemp bedding pick up.
      Thank you!

Oh no! Chickens absolutely hate change! If your coop locks at night, I would pick them up and lock them up for the night in the coop. By day number two they should have gotten used to it!
