    I love how it ended up! As you were making it I was just thinking how awkward it might be to drink out of (particularly for hot stuff) given the inward angle of the lip, so I think you made the right choice to pivot. I can imagine if you'd planned from the beginning to make the teapot, you could have sized the rings to kinda slot in together so your lid is a little more secure.
    I'm pretty excited about that scorch marker though, had no idea that was a thing, got some research to do!

    What would be a great idea is if your tea set was self contained for a journey or something. Like maybe have a way to secure the cup as a lid and then mount the whole thing to a bag on the go or something.

    Cool project man, Argentinian here. Just wanted to clarify some terms, because we really are a bit complicated. The drink is called "mate" not "yerba mate". Yerba mate is the name of the herb that is used for the infusion ("yerba" is an old Spanish word for "hierba", herb). The recipient from which the mate is sipped is also called mate. Anyways, as always, awesome content. Cheers from the south!

    A good idea, but I have a couple observations and suggestions. First, hot liquids make metal hot, which can feel uncomfortable against one's lips. Second, using two metals, steel and aluminum, might create a unwanted galvanic reaction. Third, if you wanted to make a pitcher, maybe leave the upper part of the gourd so that you can tie handles in the neck like you did with the water bottle, and; fourth, you can carve a spout. Fifth, you can create a set of cups by using the tops of several additional gourds, and; sixth, you can use the bottoms of those additional gourds as jars with lids of cork and/or wood for holding dry herbage for teas, tisanes, and tinctures or other sundry items.

And attaches to the larger vessel, but can still be detached. Just an idea.

    Personally I would have added a couple horizontal bands to tie the whole "cauldron" bit together. I'd also want to add a carrying/pouring handle of some kind to the pot, maybe using leather cord. Oh, and I'd want to add some kind of straining mechanism, like a sieve or slotted plate inside the pot that would keep the tea ingredients from pouring into the cup, or perhaps a separate little sieve/mesh catcher to hold over the cup while pouring. Maybe get overly ambitious and try to make the rim of the sieve a locking mechanism that holds the cup and pot together for transport/storage. Not sure how, exactly, but the idea is there.

    You used a heat sensitive glue to glue down your thumb stud. I’d change that before you spill hot tea all over yourself or any equipment. Good job on your project though and I might do this for a Christmas present

    In the first one, you used beeswax to make it waterproof. unless I spaced, you didn't use any sealant for this? was the beeswax un-necessary?

    With the epoxy resin, did you rough up the spot on the gourd where it was attaching? The surfaces can be really slick and it may not have been able to hold firmly to the gourd.

  • @fjolliff6308

    Ah. The gourds are all sold out. I'm noticing a trend here...
    As for the project... I'd have used the food safe silicone glue instead of the epoxy. Epoxy just doesn't seem to like organic things. It can work for wood, but anything else is unpredictable at best. Maybe there's a way to treat the gourd surface, maybe a thin layer of epoxy and let it cure before trying to use more epoxy to glue down the aluminum. Maybe also using a couple bands of wire would help hold the legs into place in a decorative way. If you want to try the cute cauldron style again. (P.s. I hate 2 part epoxy. It's always a disaster, probably because of my climate or time of year or whatever, so, biased I am.)
    It could be cute to use more of the aluminum strip to make handles, but you definitely need decorative wrapping to reinforce it, or silicone to waterproof the rivets that would hold the handle on. Those would be easier than cutting a couple of slots for the aluminum to feed into- and seal gaps with silicone, of course.
    I can go on forever with ideas, so I'm going to stop here...

    Really neat little set. Those gourds are really versatile. I'm concerned about the metal rings you used along the rims, though. Unless they are food-safe you may end up with metals like nickel, lead, aluminum, etc. leeching into your drink. Also, your beverage may heat them up while you're drinking, which gets pretty uncomfortable on the lips (I know this one from personal experience with a camping mug I purchased a while back).

    • @startrek2365
      @startrek2365 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That was myu concern too. I know that aluminum is not good to use for hot drinking vessels, and uncoated it isn't good for cold either. He did use Aluminum for the wire in both so that will come in contact with the drinks.

    I actually use nontoxic food safe resin to coat. As long as I’m careful when I turn it to coat it. It works and I also use it to make custom bottles with mica and edible sparkle dust.

    • @shauntoochaos235
      @shauntoochaos235 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Skill Tree the main concern related to the use of fully cured epoxy resin as a food container is identical to the concern surrounding other plastic items that hold food, BPA leaching. A hot drink does increase the amount of leaching compared to a cold drink but many containers also use plastic with BPA so if you are replacing a plastic container your consumption of BPA doesn't change. Additionally as this device would only be used a couple days per year the increase would not be a problem, mostly because we are constantly consuming BPA all the time and have bee since the 60s

    1. The legs didn't adhere because the skin of the gourd is not just waterproof, it's glueproof too. I didn't particularly like those legs so yay failure!
    2. If you can find a tea strainer that's the same diameter as the opening on the pot, you'll have an easier time with using loose tea. I bet you can.
    3. Every single project I've ever worked on is a repurposed version of a previous project I made. I think it must be part of my creative process. Or I just can't leave things alone.
    4. Great job!

      @@SkillTree That looks almost the size of the drop in strainers from the cups David's Tea sells? I might be miss reading the size, but if the opening is roughly 70% the size of a standard skinny coffee mug it should fit?

    I love the tiny cup, and the fact that you're using it as a lid while your tea steeps in the larger container means that your cup is heated a bit before you pour the tea. The set looks amazing!
