  • The Canned Monster is a 1956 Ford Customline gasser project and features a custom built high compression Y-Block engine built by the Y-Block Guy. The car has a top loader four speed and a 8.75" Mopar rear with spool and 4:11 gears. The rear has been moved forward nine inches making in an altered wheel base race car. The car was built to run at Eagle Field in Dos Palos, California. The car is a nod to the 1960's drag cars and was heavily influenced by the Two Lane Blacktop '55 Chevy which was also the same '55 Chevy used in American Graffiti.

    I was a Y-block guy many many decades ago - ran a couple of freak 312's that would run with the 283's in full body cars on the street (three speed Hurst of course). But I have never seen anybody successfully campaign a Y block. Good luck to you - I am looking forward to this.

      I had a really radical 312 in my 56 ford 2 door Victoria in high school back in the 70s. My uncle who was a drag racer built the motor and I helped as I learned. Super quick and would hold its own in the area where I grew up. Gosh the memories! Really neat ride to build man. Not many out there. Way cool. Good luck and God Bless.

      Bruce McIntosh , I was a Y-block guy (kid) too, we were rare. I am 75 now. My best build was a 54 Ford 2dr post Mainline. Built the baddest 312 I could for the time 1963/64. I had reworked heads and a good thumper of a cam, a large Holly and Mallory ignition, dump tubes. I worked for my dad who owned a auto repair business so I had access to a lot knowledge and connections for help. It was light and quick with a T-10 4 speed with 4:11 gears. My biggest thrill back then was handing some of those 62/63 SS 327's their ass Fri and Saturday nights in Tacoma WA...fun times I can't wait to see this 56 do its thing it will be a screamer I'm sure !

      Hey George, your car is probably the easiest car to turn into a gasser with a straight axle. Its literally a bolt on deal. No cutting or welding. Have you seen the '66 Nova that Speedway Motors built? They have videos of what they did step by step. Speedway sells all the parts to do it. A thousand times easier than this old Ford.

    It perplexes me, that you are not going to use the Best Rearend out there, the FORD 9", you can get any gear combinations and they are used everywhere. I thought You wanted it to last.

    • @SpeedandChromeTV
      @SpeedandChromeTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A 9" would have been great, but thats not what I had at the time. The 8 3/4" Mopar is a very strong rear and this car won't break it with the Yblock I'll be running. I'll be lucky it its 400 hp at the engine. It will be fine for what I"m using it for. Later on if I end up putting in a much larger, higher HP engine, putting in a 9" would be the right choice. This is a budget build, just using what I already have around.

      @robormiston2841 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've put those Dodge 8 and 3/4 rear ends. They hold 600 h.p pretty good. I had 36,000miles on my 72 Challenger before it have me any notions of trouble.

    I just picked up a 56 Fairlane I'm trying to get a wider tire on the rear any suggestions thanks bud

    • @SpeedandChromeTV
      @SpeedandChromeTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The '56 is the best looking 50s Ford cars IMO. Wonderful lines on those cars. I would go to a good tire shop and have them measure the biggest wheel and tire you get get on there. If you want bigger you can move the leaf springs in board with a kit. The Chevy guys have been doing that for a long time. If you want bigger then you can find a narrower differential to swap in, maybe out of a Bronco. They aren't cheap but it gets it done. I would start with figuring out the best backspacing on one wheels to tuck it up in there, a good tire shop can help with that. Hope that helps.
