You seem to have your accommodation in kariakoo which is expensive you can look for cheap accommodation in areas like sinza magomeni etc. The areas you visited is considered as old Dar, mombasa like, and people who live there are mainly Indians.

It's like you are moving in the same place, try to find natives to take you around that's is just a small area within a city, you need to move by boda boda otherwise you can't manage to move the whole city, Dar is very big !! there are different CBD madam, try go these areas, masaki, mwenge, ubongo, makumbusho, mikocheni, Magufuli bus terminal, msasani, kinondoni, coco beach, osterbay, mlimani city mall, sinza, mawasiliano,Kivukoni fish market, msasani, mbezi beach and they are very far from where you are, you can't go on foot
It's not expensive but you choose expensive hotels ,but there are very reasonable clean and affordable hotels around kariakoo,Kinondoni,Ilala and mwenge areas .
To enjoy my advice is to look for locals to guide, as u can see they find it hard to speak English. I can help when you take a trip to Dodoma, i can assist you I'm currently living in Dodoma if you don't mind.

I live in dar es salaam and I know a lot of restaurants from top middle and lower class, try these areas next time samaki samaki, wavuvi camp, holiday inn, karambezi cafe, cape town fish market, kuku kuku, warehouse, element, jangwani sea breeze, Ramada resort, Juliana, psssf tower there is new one, Tanzanite park I know a lot of places or you can try kigambonii area where you can find restaurants near the beach
