a nice loveletter to a real sleeper synthesizer. my 12 was a deeply discounted thomann b-stock that arrived essentially new in 2019 and it's been a cornerstone of my synth tower since. while i struggled developing a workflow around the mod matrix and some other button combos, the deepmind is a sterling example of immediacy and flexibility and feels purpose-built for the studio, and as you've shown, dedication to understanding the controls unlocks everything. while it's not strictly a 106 clone, it does borrow a lot from that form factor, which pays huge dividends. in the (semi) modular world, the neutron is a similar concept - a fantastic and original design that punches way above its weight.

Whenever I read comments on the subject of synthesizers, there are always guys who seem to have paid absurdly low prices for their instruments... I would really be interested to know what I'm doing wrong that people always get their synths so dirt cheap compared to what I have to pay🤯! €600 four years ago you say? In our country Thoman is currently selling the DM12 for €830!
Really nice programming work, (and nice chord voicings too). You seem to have taken a lot of time to dig into the DM12’s two superpowers, the mod matrix and the effects. Sub’d, hoping to see more. (Edit: Also enjoyed the Radiohead patch vid.)
I really like my deepmind, but it's not exactly beginner friendly in my opinion, even though the controls seem in line with what'd get on a Juno, you still need to perform some tricks to make it shine. With the Pro-800 now being available, I think it's a better choice as it's super immediate thanks to a mostly knob-per-function and quite traditional in terms of subtractive synthesis approach. It also sounds really great even without FX. The tradeoff - you need to have an external midi keyboard as it's a desktop module. That said, I have both and neither are going anywhere :)
That’s a good point, the Pro 800 probably has an easier learning curve for true beginners who are trying to grasp fundamental subtractive synthesis concepts. I’d argue that the DM12 does more to introduce users to higher concepts (modulation matrices, different types of digital fx, etc.) without forcing them. I think it encourages more exploration and ultimately could push beginners a bit further in their synthesis journey than the Pro 800, at the expense of a slightly steeper learning curve up front. Would you say that’s a fair comparison?
Lovely musical and usable patches, you’ve made there but that deepmind is capable of a much deeper and richer, and more varied textures than what was demonstrated. Ive owned mine for 7years and I’ve had deep meditative drones, mellow Rhodes, ethereal breathey textures, gritty distorted basses, funky Wurlitzer piano’s, acidic bass sounds, orchestral strings and many unique flavours and textures you wouldn’t be able to achieve from a 106. You will regret not digging even deeper and spending more time with it before selling.
Great demo, useful tips, you give a fresh point of view on this synth, thanks ! And nice playing, too. Why are you saying you’ll get rid of your dm12 ? Or maybe I misunderstood ?
When I made this video, I was planning to sell it and replace it with a DM12 desktop unit to have more space. Since then I've decided to hang on to my unit to make more videos!
Although it's not a new product, I still want one of these. I think this is the only thing I needed to be able to convince myself, was a demo mostly focused on making music. Great patches.
I have a love hate relationship with my DM12D,, never got the keys as the keybed was trash when it 1st came out. I use mine for an FX section or to broaden my pads from another synth. It barely ever gets showcased as a main synth as I have synth that cut through the mix better. It's not a bad synth, it's just a pita go get to the fx through menu diving. My Rev 2 module destroys it for UI. GL with your next synth, hope it's a good one.
Did Behringer update the keybed between production runs? Mine feels like a pretty standard synth action with good build quality. Definitely agree that the FX section is clunky to use-the companion iPad/desktop app makes it 1000x easier.
@@jakubdomine yeah they did, but the way they went around it, they had some shill on GS denying that there was any keybed issues, they were uneven and this was widely reported. My problem was solved easily with just getting the module. I could never get wifi to work with mine so I don't know if the IPAD app works. I follow instructions to a T but that was a few years ago so probably haven't tried since.
My most beloved synth, in my opinion the best Behringer built to this day. Sadly they don't make them like that anymore and regressed to pure clones with as little additional features as possible.
Yep! Poly modes divide your polyphony by the number of unison voices per note. The DM12 is nice because you can explore those higher unison modes without restricting your playing much

I have the DM12 and DM6....I like them but I find the somewhat bizzarre effects of the various settings unpredictable... Also they don't work well with MIDI control from other synths ...... also the DM12 "WORK" station lacking octave setting is a major bummer...
Great video preview of the DeepMind 12! I'm really impressed with the sound possibilities. Quick question: how can I make a patch even louder when the VCA is already at its maximum (255)? Any tips or tricks would be much appreciated! :)
Sure, there's a couple things you can do. First, the VCA edit menu has a parameter called "VCA Mode" that has 2 options: Transparent (the default) and Ballsy. Switching to Ballsy will give you some more loudness. If that's not enough, you can use the FX section to pick an effect that has an Output Gain option, like Enhancer or FairComp. These can give you a LOT more gain, but just make sure you've turned off everything else in the effect that might color the sound. For example, in the Enhancer you'll want to make sure Spread, BassGain, MidGain, and HiGain are all set to 0 before you turn up the OutGain for loudness. Hope that helps!
I’m using a sustain pedal, but if you wanted low notes to decay slower than high notes you could use the mod matrix to map the note num to the decay of one of your envelopes.
Analog sounds having to be turned into digital to be fed into the FX-processors and then be turned back to analog: isn't that a big loss in sound quality?
I’m thinking about swapping it out for a high end MIDI controller (Arturia KeyLab or similar) and investing in some desktop modules! The UDO Super 6 module is a likely pick right now.
@@jakubdomine sold mine a year ago along with the Hydrasynth. I wanted to upgrade to the Novation Summit I don't miss the Hydrasynth at all, sounded too digital, and hate digital wave tone. However, I've always missed the Deepmind 12, even with the Summit, which is an incredible synth. I dunno, for sound creation there's just something about the Deepmind 12, it's incredibly flexible, easy to use, you can go from subtle ambiant sounds to crazy modulation sweeps and amazing drones that constantly move in seconds. It's made me realise that selling it was a bad move. So...I just bought the Desktop version, and yeah...so glad I've got a Deepmind 12 back into the studio. As a Side note, the Super 6....I does suffer from Vioce stealing when creating sustained pads. It's very noticeable...just something to bear in mind.
@@maydaygoingdown5602 that’s a good point, I’ve definitely been spoiled by the 12 voices on the DM. I’m a sucker for super wide stereo patches which is why the Super 6 is appealing to me-idk of another synth built around stereo width as a main feature. Alternatively I could wait and spend all my savings on the Super Gemini later this year….20 voices is pretty insane
@@jakubdomine Yes you can get nice stereo spread out of the UDO 6. But you won't be able to create a pad patch like you are showing in your video on the DM12 due to noticeable vioce stealing when using sustained chords. I'll be selling the Udo 6 for the Gemini. It's the much better Poly synth of the two. I'm saying that, however I really want the Waldorf Quantum Mk2 more so might put the ££ towards that.

Just finished your video, you got some really nice sounds on the Deepmind, and great playing too!
So...👌😎
I could only dive into a few patches in this video! Maybe I'll do a playing-only video soon where I demonstrate the range of patches I've created.
That guitar patch sounded so good!
Thank you!!
27:39 The playing and chord progressions on the last improv are so amazing.
guys can i just say that reading positive comments about the DM just reaffirms my decision. it’s such a beautiful machine
The Deepmind 12 and the B2600, you will never need other synths (except maybe two of each) 😀
This is FANTASTIC! Really appreciate the presentation. Do you share your DM12 patches, or have them for sale?
I’m just starting to work on a process for compiling and selling patches-stay tuned!
Love your sting recreation, close to traditional Eurasian instruments. Mode matrix is for me genius, 👌👍
Thank you!
Great demo, useful tips, you give a fresh point of view on this synth, thanks ! And nice playing, too.
Why are you saying you’ll get rid of your dm12 ? Or maybe I misunderstood ?
I was planning to sell it and replace it with a DM12 desktop unit, but I've decided to hang on to my unit instead to make more videos!
Companies should pay you to create factory pre set patches!
you’re tellin’ me!!
Good playing. Love my DM.
What synth do you plan on replacing your Deepmind 12 with Jakub?
When I made this video, I was planning to sell it and replace it with a DM12 desktop unit to have more space. Since then I've decided to hang on to my unit to make more videos!
Great decision:)
Although it's not a new product, I still want one of these. I think this is the only thing I needed to be able to convince myself, was a demo mostly focused on making music. Great patches.
Thank you!
Sadly they don't make them like that anymore and regressed to pure clones with as little additional features as possible.
great sales pitch jakub
The Juno-106 had DCO´s not VCO´s you might mixing it up with the Juno-60 or Juno-6??
i mostly use the deepmind as a midi keyboard, also has a hack with the weight keys that makes it less springy
Oh , yeah ... My name is Mikkel , and I Love Gear ! 👆
Maybe you can answer this for me...if you use 2 voices per key, would that drop polyphony to 6, making the Deepmind 6 just 3 note polyphony?
Yep! Poly modes divide your polyphony by the number of unison voices per note. The DM12 is nice because you can explore those higher unison modes without restricting your playing much
Hey Jakub:
GRRREEEEEEEAAAAAAAAT Video!
I own a Deepmind 12 since one year now, but it seems that I don't konw very much about this machine. But You have given me lots of helpfull informations.
Thank You very very much!
Greetings from germany
Markus
PS: Have You found out how to create the classical Lyle Mays sound with the deepmind?
Thank you for the kind words! I'm not familiar with the Lyle Mays synth sound, could you link an example here?
@@jakubdomineShure: th-cam.com/video/zhZy4SCV50E/w-d-xo.html
I'm trying hard to find Out in which was I have to Set Up my deepmind, but without success.
So You have an Idea?
@@Stammeskrieger1 This got me pretty close to the sound in the video:
0) Initialize a new patch
1) Square only on OSC1
2) OSC2 at full volume, make sure sync is off and set it a few cents sharp or flat of OSC1
3) Add a few cents of pitch mod to OSC2, make sure LFO1 is moving slowly
4) Set your polyphony mode to Mono, set Env-Trigger to Retrig, and set Osc-drift to 15
5) Close the filter and move the Env fader all the way up in the filter section
6) VCA Env: Att=22, Dcy=128, Sus=255, Rel=128
7) VCF Env: Att=0, Dcy=51, Sus=201, Rel=128
8) Mod Env (Env3): Atk=0, Dcy=40, Sus=0, Rel=0
9) In the mod matrix, map Env3 to OSC1 Pitch with a depth of +4
At this point you’ve got the sound, but I’d probably add reverb/delay FX and map either the mod wheel or aftertouch to pitch mod to add some playable vibrato. Hope this helps!
Hi Jakub, thanx for Your Help. IT seems that I Made Something wrong Here. One Question: at Nr. 5 You wrote: Close the Filter. Which one do You mean?
And at Nr 3 You wrote: make Shure LFO1 ist moving slowly.
I have to use LFO 1?
Pleased help me, I'm confused...
Got one when it came out barely used it as the menu is all over the place and it crashes freezes sometimes however it does have some good analogue circuitry chips etc and sounds..my other boards are jx8p, d50, korg trinity plus, juno gi, jupiter 80, korg wavestation, casio privia px3, casio cz101.. im thinking of getting the asm hydrasynth deluxe and at a later date a better stage piano
Can you share the patch that you used on the 23:43 mark?
At the 27:40 mark - the patch has sustained bass and plucked right-hand notes. How is this achieved? I’m a new DM12 owner.😊
I’m using a sustain pedal, but if you wanted low notes to decay slower than high notes you could use the mod matrix to map the note num to the decay of one of your envelopes.
@@jakubdomine Thx. I’ll try that. Hadn’t messed with note number yet.
Love your patches! Any chance they're available? Or did you already sell the unit?
Working on setting up a system to sell patches, stay tuned!
Do you sell your patches??? Let me know!
working on it, stay tuned!
Does anyone know if you can mess the synth up of you put phantom power into is by accident… I made a mistake
Well done! A very good retrospective on this synth... I want one now!
Analog sounds having to be turned into digital to be fed into the FX-processors and then be turned back to analog: isn't that a big loss in sound quality?
I sold some gear that I really miss now.
Modern classic
The big question is, what will be replacing the DeepMind in your setup?
I’m thinking about swapping it out for a high end MIDI controller (Arturia KeyLab or similar) and investing in some desktop modules! The UDO Super 6 module is a likely pick right now.
@@jakubdomine sold mine a year ago along with the Hydrasynth.
I wanted to upgrade to the Novation Summit
I don't miss the Hydrasynth at all, sounded too digital, and hate digital wave tone.
I was thinking of getting a summit however I'm waiting for my deepmind 12 to arrive as it was cheaper.
Great video but why if you love it did you get rid of it?
Was originally going to refactor my setup to include a piano action midi keyboard and small desktop synth modules, but I’ve decided to keep the DM12 after all!
Great demo.👍🏼 Btw-Why are you getting rid of it,offhand? Lack of space,or upgrading to a different synth?
Thank you! I'm a keyboard player so I'd love a MIDI keyboard with piano action. I'll probably buy a DM12D to replace this synth and control it with some high-quality piano action controller.
For the learner that I am, what kind of or which piano controller are you thinking?
I have the Deepmind 12 D fore a few time. So I play it with my 88 SL studio piano touch. Thanks for your presets showing why I was confident buying it on internet as what is shown to listen is a poor view of the ability of the deepmind.🙏🧡💚 So why do you sold this instrument? You may have a good reason?🙀
I'm actually thinking about switching to a setup like yours. I'd love a keyboard with piano action, so I'll probably buy a DM12D and control it with something like an Arturia Keylab 88 mkII. Then for future synth purchases I'll try to buy mostly desktop modules.
Guitar dream sounds more like an electric harp or an Asian Kyoto. Very bright stringy sounding.
I like your playing.
Thank you!
I bought this synth: you are going to be my bff for the next period of time (will watch this videos a lot)
that is cool...
Super ! 👋
So this begs the question, what are you buying to replace the DM12?
Nothing! Since making this video, I've decided to hang on to my unit to keep making videos. At the time, I was thinking about replacing my unit with a DM12 desktop module to save space.
Good work bro. That was cool. This might sound strange but, mine has an oil leak. Something inside it had dropped oil and it spread under the bottom. Hasnt affected it adversely though. Never gigged, always covered. Just saying. Ps its a wonderful machine, 👍
Hm, sounds like an gasket problem in your engine. Might wanna drive that in to a mechanic
Probably need to get my pads machined. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Is this synth as good as an Arturia Polybrute? Thanks.
Haven't used the Polybrute myself, but I'd say the Polybrute is definitely marketed as more of a high-end synth than the DeepMind 12.
Jakub, I was not convinced with the quality of its sound but you have made me think again. I was missing sine, but you demonstrated how to get that in a different video. The preset at 23:50 is that one of your own and if so, are they available to us? Thanks.
the Deepmind is a gorgeous (sounding) synth! I love him more than somme of the more expensive synths...
make 808s please
If anyo e has the high pitched whine issue on their DM12, Yuki the Synth Dragon youtube has a fix that works!
Nice Yamaha sgv in the background ;)
Love that thing, wish the fretboard were a little wider though.
Patch for 27:38, please?
damn never heard of anyone producing in Indiana
Are there splits and layers user defined?
Nope, the DM12 is mono-trimbral-only one patch can be loaded at a time
Better than korg minilogue xd?
Can't say that one is objectively better than the other, each synth is good at different things.
So glad I didn’t sell mine
👍I LOVE ! 💙⚪❤
Still sellin’ it?🫣
Sorry, not anymore! I've decided to hang on to my unit to make more videos.
so what's the actual reason you're getting rid of it then?
I'm in the process of refactoring my setup to run everything through a high-quality MIDI keyboard (something with piano action, I'm a snob). In all honestly, I'll likely end up replacing the synth with a DM12 desktop module.
Two years later you’ll be scouring websites to buy on back! 😂
After some research I’m probably gonna swap mine out for a DM12D and a nice MIDI keyboard 🤣
Novation ultranova x ever
First analog synthesizer? i dont get that just because its easy to program doesnt mean its a beginner synth. Then the Yamaha EX-5 must be for professionals only 🤣🤣🤣
