Jenson was a master class back then, that high downforce setup turned out great for them, he had traction on a track no-one had any and his wet driving skills that day put him up there with great rainmasters such as Senna and Schumacher. I was there with my father, at the exit of the hairpin, under the trees on the hill. The hill became muddy quite fast and everyone was shoving their umbrellas into each other's face. Everyone was checking the weather on their smartphones, and quickly the rumor that the race couldn't possibly be restarted got around the general access areas. My father and I decided to go back home rather than risk being wet and miserable for nothing.
When the red flag was called, we had enough time to take public transit back home before the race restarted.

Another great race of Button. I'm a huge fan of him and if there wasn't RedBull he'd surely gained more world driver titles. Shame that the McLaren started to suck from 2013 onwards and the start of the hybrid era so he didn't had anymore chance since his last win in Brazil 2012. He may "only" gained 8 wins for McLaren but it's overlooked how many podiums he reached from 2010-2012 and often was in the title hunt till the last 3 or 2 races

I been a massive Button fan and a lot of races stand out for me like, 2004 Monaco since that was insane due to accidents behind the safety car and it ended up Button trying to past Jarno Trulli in the final laps screaming at my TV. Then that same season 2004 Germany GP the race with Kimi rear wing failure and Button having helmet tear off issues where where he had to hold onto his helmet in the straights since the wind was effecting him and I think he over took Alonso as well doing it. And then 2006 Hungarian GP which everyone knows already
Like really Button could of won the world championship in 2004 with BAR if it was not for the most dominant Ferrari ever made he could of won at least a couple of world championships if he did not stick with Honda during the dark times of the earth car era but again due to Honda pulling out of F1 he did finally win it with Brawn

People forget how great of a driver he was overall.
He won’t be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Vettel or Verstappen because he wasn’t fast-tracked into race-winning cars from an early age, and admittedly, he won’t be remembered as a driver who could drag a midfield car kicking and screaming into the sharp end of the grid like Schumacher or Alonso.
To me, Button deserves to be mentioned alongside the likes of Hunt, Mansell, and Hill, as a driver who had to fight hard to get into F1, and fight even harder to stay there, and when the opportunity to win a title finally came along, grabbed it with both hands and didn’t let go.

If you want a example of how Jenson Button well and truly stood alone in these kinds of conditions, I strongly recommend you check out the Hungarian GP later that same year.
On-and-off rain all day, the track seemingly bone dry one lap, then greasier than your average politician the next. Up and down the grid, drivers and engineers alike losing their heads over what tyres to be on at any moment.
All except Button. He mastered the unpredictable conditions, kept his cool, and cruised through to take the second of his 3 wins in 2011, on his 200th GP start, at the circuit where he claimed his first ever win.

Probably the strangest Canadian Grand Prix was the 1973 race. Another wet race, it was also the first time a Safety Car was deployed, it also led to absolute chaos in the timing and scoring. Nobody was 100% sure who actually won the race, only being decided when each and every team handed in their own lap charts to try and work out a winner

Remember watching this race with my dad, we’d watched it all the way through including the stoppage and Martin Brundle and David Coulthard’s bird commentary. The tension as the last few laps unfolded and when Button overtook Vettel we both jumped off the sofa cheering. A race that we’ll both never forget and rightly so.

Schumacher climbing his way to 2nd and still gaining in the wet is just peak Schumacher lmao Managed to hold off Webber in that dogwater of a Mercedes. Man still had some good days in his 2010-2012 stint despite his nerve damage.

Love the last words at the end, but with all honestly I don't believe that Vettel, even at his absolute peak, was as good as Verstappen in his current form. Vettel was always prone to making mistakes, he definitely was talented but in my eyes both Alonso and Hamilton were above him in that regard. Vettel had a lot of luck of being in the right place during the early 2010's. I do miss the engine sound of those days, lol.

Thank you for calling out F1's ridiculous anti-wet weather racing rules. Races with changeable conditions are the few chances we get for a crazy race with a mixed up order (Monaco '96, Spa '98, Britain '08, Canada '11, Germany '19, Hungary '21, Russia '21, would've been Spa '21).
And before people attack me on "safety grounds", these are meant to be the 20 best drivers on the planet. If they can't handle the rain, hire better drivers. Listen to the likes of Stewart, Brooks, Herbert, Mansell, Montoya, etc. They all recount a respect for racing and a discipline in the wet that we don't see any more because the sport is unnecessarily bubble-wrapped. They are the best in the world; let them race.

"It aint over, until its over"
Pfff, Raikkönen clearly proved that in Suzuka 2005.
But despite of what Button did (sure, he deserves every credit in this race) and the fight he had vs Schumacher and Webber, Kobayashi vs Massa was probably the highlight here.
Kobayashi could have transformed into a (possibly) top tier driver if he either stayed with Sauber after 2012 or if he went to a better team. Who knows how far he could have gone. But up to now, he probably is the best japanese F1 driver overall.
However, he has a huge amounts of success in Le Mans and Endurance (after F1), so it worked well for him.

NOPE. The greatest was the 1995 race. Jean Alesi driving Gilles Villeneuve's #27 with an inferior V12. And he won on his 31st birthday too. And the sight of Schumacher driving him back to the pits was rated one of the most iconic moments of the season.

For me, it was I think the second best race I've ever witnessed. It had everything, and so much tension for so long.
Of course, the only race which I think beats it is the Brazilian GP in 2008, but while that wins for overall excitement, it was mostly crammed into just a few moments at the end, whereas the Canadian GP just ahd everything for hours.
It even had a moment where David Coulthard, whilst commentating with Martin Brundle, described a bird as having red "shoulders" while he scratched around for something to talk about.

People talk about Button, and rightly so, but I'd nearly forgotten Webber and Schumacher's ding dong fight over 3rd. I spent that whole last part hoping Vettel would spin off and not be able to rejoin so we could have Button-Webber-Schumacher as a podium.

I remember watching this live. The TV wasn't following Jenson for the longest time, he wasn't mentioned. I noticed Jenson moving up the places and I said to my dad 'watch Jenson', he said 'why?', I said 'because he's doing well and he looks like he's going to do something really special'. Soon after my dad wandered off.
I watched him moving up the places and still, for the longest time, no mention in commentary or shots of his car...
Eventually it was all over and my dad wondered back in and said 'Who won'. I told him. Reaction: 'Oh'.

"If you see a Red Bull up front just remember it ain't over till it's over." Correct. If the lead Red Bull wrecks it'll just be the the 2nd one winning by 10 seconds instead of 20-30 lol

Except in todays field you dont have drivers like Button, sure you have Alonso Lewis but thats about it,Leclerc has been cursed by the whole of Mexico thus his season is "lovely",Sainz is there but not "up" there,Perez is like Webber hit or miss mostly miss since he cant get the max out of his car,Russel is fast but at times his brain goes bye bye & still has a mistake or 2 in his locker,Ocon cant since the Alpine isnt there yet,Lando good in quali but trash in a race, and the rest arent even worth talking about.

This race could have happened anywhere, and it just happened to occur in Montreal.
The 1978 race was significant because it happened in Montreal. Villeneuve's maiden win anywhere else would not have been so special.

  • @reptongeek

I disagree with the assertion it was the longest race ever. It actually wasn't, if you take away the red flag stoppage - as you should - the race only lasted 27 seconds beyond the 2 hour time limit. Olivier Panis's win at Monaco in 1996 was longer

I think f1 tv has a couple of different versions of the race. One with Button and Crofty on commentary (and Di Resta too I think). And an analysis with Palmer jr and de la Rosa. Of you don't want to sit through the whole replay.

As a Vettel fan, this moment still brings me great anger and pain. He absolutely bottled it here, and this remained his biggest choke job up until he one-upped it at at Hockenheim in 2018…but then again, I still do not understand how button got away scot free with two at-fault incidents over the course of that race. I guess this race was spoiled for me being a big Seb fan, so I don’t really see it the same way everyone else did. But regardless, Josh made did this race justice with this video.

I watch F1 today in the hope I'll see the next race that goes down in history like this. Unfortunately they're all usually borefests now and decisions all aimed at making it more of a show than a sport. This race wouldn't be allowed to unfold in 2023 the way it did in 2011. Majority of the race would be behind the safety car and then called off.

Remember when they weren't afraid to start a race in the rain, and let what could happen, actually happen.
Today, if there's but one drop of rain on their visors they start crying, saying stuff like: "Man, I can't se shit out here." or "Visibility is really bad" and want the race to be red flagged.
These are the best drivers in the world. But they can't handle a little puddle.

I watched this race on speed tv in the USA, for some reason I had to record it because I couldn’t watch it live. And anyone that used DVR knows to record the following show if you’re filming a sports event because my brother in Christ, you don’t know how mad I got when I saw jenson on Sebastian’s ass only for the recording to stop before vettel spun out. The race was so damn long with the red flag it cut out most of the race
