My dog is kinda big but he's unusually calm and I noticed a long time ago that he is very liked by other dogs, especially small ones, so I concluded his energy makes others feel comfortable. Comfortable enough for him to have a bunch of ravens following him on foot, gawking at him to get his attention, and trying to pull his tail when he's not looking. My dog doesn't even acknowledge their presence and I am pretty sure getting his attention has become a game for them.

    Having a home aquarium and testing out different filters and pumps, I got to witness how even guppies and gold fish would play in the currents for fun. With rock layouts I created a swim lane for them, and rocks to keep the rest of the tank calm and slow moving water if they wanted. The fish would use the track as fun to swim with each other, some would try to outswim the current as a game and go back to the beginning and do it all over again, but not always the super fast sprint, just more like a tread mill and group walking event. Fish taught me not only do they like to have just a slight amount of entertainment (faster currents) but they have personalities (basic ones) where there is a pecking order, and trusted friends to hang out with in cliques.

    My dad did his Masters in Yellowstone over 30 years ago. He could have told you that otters love play even back then lol. He was doing research in the river, in a full wetsuit and flippers. A group of otters lived in the area, and over time they got used to him. Dad used to say they thought he was one of them, just all big and weird looking. They'd come and swim around him, chasing each other and trying to get his attention. He said they'd also do the belly sliding thing in other seasons too, sliding into the river from steep embankments in groups. It always sounded so magical as a kid, a whole family of otter playing with you while you worked. Of course, it probably screwed with his work, but he always enjoyed interacting with them.

    My neighbours have a garden shed with a pretty steep roof. Once it got covered in a layer of snow, and I watched two blackbirds playing by pushing each other off the roof. No joke, one would wait for the other to push it, slide down the length of the roof, taking flight at the end, then fly up and push the now waiting playmate down. It was adorable.
    Another time I saw a group of tame mice running around in a wheel. This wheel had horizontal bars and was big enough to allow three of four mice to run next to each other. Every once in a while, one of the mice would grab hold of the bars, make a full turn and start running again at the bottom.

    • @Brooklyn_Ann
      @Brooklyn_Ann ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Cats aren't prey animals, though. They're pound for pound the most efficient carnivore on the planet. They just don't speak the same body language as dogs, so unless they spend time with dogs, they don't understand the bow as a "let's play" gesture. Also, the bow generally means "let's wrestle," not "let's play chase." Try peeking at them from around a corner or wait for when they're zooming around, make eye contact, then do a quick tap dancing imitation--like you're going to run, but don't actually do it. They usually respond by speeding off and hiding, then darting back around you to try to get you to do it again because they think it's fun.

    Ravens in Central Park are known to mimic popular ring tones just to troll people walking through.
    I once read an anecdote from someone running the Iditarod where they'd stopped for a break and found themselves unable to look away from something strange they'd spotted. It was so weird, in fact, that they just stood there staring at it so long that another sledder stopped to check on them, and found themselves mesmerized as well, before the first one asked the second one, "You're seeing this, too, right? I'm not hallucinating?"
    And the second sledder confirmed that they were watching a giant bull moose running onto the surface of a frozen lake, falling down onto his hindquarters to slide across it, and then getting up and doing it again.

I have a friend who went full-bore into marine biology, specializing in cetacean research, because of a single childhood visit to SeaWorld that sparked what sure seems to be a lifelong interest in orcas and dolphins.

      A friend of mine once told me about how their friend's hamster kept getting out at night, and they couldn't for the life of them figure out how. The animal was kept in a cage high up on a counter, with a mesh top that was too high for them* to reach.
      One night she stayed up to see how the hamster was doing it. It turned out they had been shoving a bunch of shavings under their wheel to keep it steady; they then steadied themself on top of the wheel, pushed the mesh top off with their nose, and dropped 6ft down to explore the house at their leisure. I feel like, when we measure an animal's level of contentment merely by whether they're fed and watered, we forget that most species require some sort of intellectual stimulation as well.
      *I'm using they due to the fact that I can't remember the animal's sex

    Just discovered your channel, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE! I'm currently 3 hours late to work because I'm binge watching your videos. You're perfect. In other news, I have many pet tarantulas. One would think spiders are not smart or playful, but after watching mine playing with ping pong balls, moving things, water cups, dirt, putting their trash out for me to remove (lol, it's true), "recognizing" me when I work in their enclosures, I know each of their personalities, and they seem to know me and that I'm not a threat. It's crazy. I may be anthropomorphizing, but they are so different than I expected. Keep up the awesome videos. I've traveled the world, seen a lot of awesome things in nature, and you're totally going to make me book another trip. I needed this inspiration in my life so much right now. Thank you!!

    A theory of mine about how wolves started to fetch stuff because of the crows, is when crows do this with vultures too, essentialy picking up an unwanted bone from the carcass, tossing it somewhere else to distract the wolf or the vulture from getting into the juicy bits of their carcass. It has been recorded plenty of times and the wolves and vultures seems to be happy with it and stop bothering the crows on the carcass itself for as long as the interest in the bone is kept (or the marrow is consumed).

    I grew up in remote Alaska. I think all baby animals play. I think their parents often join in. I have watched a moose cow play with her calves in a sprinkler on a hot summer day. I have watched sow bears play with their cubs. I think the most under appreciated player is the beluga whales. They will play all by themselves, with others of their own kind, and when they can talk em into it, humans. I had a my dogs soft frisbee in my coat one time when I went fishing. Spent 2 hr of that day playing fetch with a beluga. Such a charmer.

    The building I live in is beside another building, and that creates a wind tunnel. Crows know all about this wind tunnel, and will gather on breezy days to f around. Watching them play is like watching kids invent games. A dog plays because it's important for socialization, a cat plays because it's good hunting practise, but the crows appeared to be challenging each other to dive and hover and stuff like that. All animals play, but the crows' organized play was something else.

    Ravens and wolves have relationships? Kind of ties in with how they're seen in Norse mythology. Hugin and Munin are two raven spies of Odin and Geri and Freki are their wolf counterparts. It might be based in observations of them in nature.
