7 years later and he's beginning to be know as quite a master of Horror scores for doing what he did for Uzumaki and Hereditary. Who would have know a saxophone could sound so aesthetic yet so horrifying
@@LEARNHOMEOPATHY When he toured with Ex Eye, one of the other band members talked about how he almost constantly did weird-sounding breath exercises in the tour van. His music is as much an athletic feat as it is a musical feat.
@iceddante The 'throat mic' basically picks up the sound directly from his throat and from nowhere else (well, little of anything else gets through) The sound of the sax is picked up by other mics in the room. When he records in the studio he uses 24 mics at one time!!!
Stunning performance.....absolutely one of the most evocative pieces of music I've ever heard and seen performed in my 30 years as an audio engineer. Wow!
you can like what he does or not. but this guy is truly something to behold. i was on a video crew shooting sxsw in 2011 for NPR. this day we were at the parish and shot him and tuneyards in the same showcase. that was really the only set that from that week that i still remember a decade plus later.
The thought of playing a wind instrument scares me. I took clarinet lessons for one day and the teacher was like "Okay, you're really horrible at this". This dude's amazing though. Man... He turned that instrument into something else.
You had a terrible teacher. Musicianship isn't a talent it's a skill. Any music teacher who knows the first thing about music or teaching should know that musical ability comes with hard work and perseverance. I myself teach the French Horn, and some of my students pick up on certain things faster than others, but with practice they are all able to figure things out. It's never too late to learn an instrument and I hope you give it another shot.
@@eben7248 i mean it IS a talent depending on how good ypu are when you begin. Some people who have never played drums a day in their life, can sit down and play a simple 4/4 beat with relatively good tempo. Thats talent. To build upon that talent is what skill is. Not everyone has a lot of talent to begin with but anyone can build skill.
@@TotinosOtherBoy yeah i agree which is why i mentioned that some of my students pick up certain things faster, but i was just saying as a whole, musicianship isn’t a talent. Some people definitely have that talent that gives them the extra edge when learning, but its not like a ceiling that only some people can reach. But yeah i think we agree, i just wasn’t clear enough in my first comment i guess.
One of the best experiences live. Next week will be my 5th time seeing Colin live, it's an otherworldly experience. I'm preparing myself by consuming as much material as I can, just like every other time. One thing that likely should've been obvious to me from hearing the music, but became very apparent when I saw him in person the first time, is what an absolute unit of a man the guy is. He's built like a god damn athlete or a powerlifter of sorts, and it makes perfect sense why.
@@Bandaera20 i don't know, i've been playing guitar for 15 years and I would argue having an instrument with frets and exact tunings and be able to learn from vast learning sources is much much easier than what it takes to learn wind instruments, let alone one that requires respiratory muscle training and pitch control as precise as a bass sax.
@@ezzongI had been playing alto for about a year and a half and my teacher made me switch to baritone sax.. I could not even fathom those low notes until about two weeks in. I can hardly imagine doing what he does for as long as he can. Truly a beast of a saxophonist.
@@ezzong this is such a dumb comment. Exact tunings? You think saxophones aren't tuned? You think guitars can't be tuned to microtonal or non-western tunings? You think frets are fundamentally any different from the buttons on a sax?
Love it. Great musician, great music. He should join forces with the Stick Men, I would buy this and play it every day, though it will drive my wife crazy.
he, got, fucking, jacked. look at him now he's a tank with much better posture and you can tell the core strength makes a difference in the confidence of the sound
I still don't understand how this works though... the dog collar picks up the sound from his throat? Because it still sounds like it is coming from the saxophone.
It sure is, and is also incredibly easy to learn. Blow out your cheeks and push the air through your pursed lips using only cheek muscles. Do this until it feels normal. Then use your nose to breath in at the same time. The hard part is utilizing the air once you've got it and not getting a glottal stop sound in-between. I use circular breathing all the time (as a trumpeter). Hope this helps!
What a monster. He's more in tune with his instrument than I am with my own body.
and with his sax too
yes!
@@Lgg130 thats what he said.
He’s just as in tune with his body too. The physical skill and prowess it takes to play all that.
I like how this is called a "How to..." As if any mere mortal could pick up a bass saxophone and do the same things he does!
7 years later and he's beginning to be know as quite a master of Horror scores for doing what he did for Uzumaki and Hereditary. Who would have know a saxophone could sound so aesthetic yet so horrifying
Imagine trying to master circular breathing like he does...
im getting close...
That's some of the most athletic musicianship I've ever seen! Genius!
I agree, he's a great example in general, not the 'drugs and alcohol' type for sure
saw him in action. couple of times. Visually he's the same as someone doing a major Gym workout while underwater

I love the song, but hearing it played here makes the scream part sound MUCH more haunting than it is in the official audio... and I love it.

anybody got the tabs for this??????
The main bassline is DFDCAGD on repeat

Insane. He’s truly one with his instrument.
And to think that the music is so beautiful.
How does a human have so much oxygen in its lungs?
circular breathing
He has become a machine...
How the fuck do you circular breathe on a bass sax.
macarthur grants were made for guys like this
The man himself is an instrument.
When all those guitars seem completely simple and common compared to what he does with a baritone sax.
Kevin Manriquez You don't know guitar man
If you did you wouldn't say that
But I agree this is amazing
That's a bass saxophone

Coltrane to the next level - amazing - goosebumps :-)
you mean Rahsaan Roland Kirk to the next level? ;]

He has to lubricate the reed before he can play it
If u a sax player u get it

@iceddante Well the microphone picks up the sound and transmits it to a PA surely, that's why the sounds are unified.

Ghost Rider (Suicide song)/ M.I.A.'s Born Free might have been an inspiration for the bass riff.
