The build up to Luke's entrance is so well done. From the single x wing flying into the ship to him finally showing his face, you can see things like the green lightsaber, the black glove, even seeing the design of the lightsaber. It goes from "is that Luke Skywalker?" to "OMG it's Luke Skywalker"

I like that there is a close up on Cara Dune as Luke and Grogu are walking away. She was a shock trooper for the Rebellion and was from Aldeeran. She was the only one who really knew who Luke was and what he had done for the Galaxy. Everyone else there just saw a Jedi, she saw the hero of the Rebellion.

Fun fact about the finale, Peyton Reed, who directed the Ant-Man movies, directed the second season finale, and the sound team used the audio from the original trilogy to match Mark Hamill’s voice since he portrayed Luke Skywalker in the original trilogy. And the hallway scene reminded me a lot of Rogue One where Darth Vader took down the rebels and in the second season finale, Luke took down the Imperial droids in a similar way, so it’s like mirroring the hallway scenes.

When he first appeared, we thought "no way that's not Luke" as we've been let down often. Then the green light saber and the mechanical hand, and still we didn't want to believe. The cool thing is you can see the sheer terror on Gideon's face when he realizes just who is coming to them. You have to remember Luke is basically the boogeyman to the Empire remnants at this point. He's the guy who blew up the first Death Star and was in a room with The Emperor and Vader on the 2nd Death Star and was the only one to come out alive. He's the last person Gideon wanted to see.

Luke was heavily feared by Gideon and the rest of the remnants of the Empire. He went into throne room with both the Emperor and Vader and he was the only one that came out. No one knew exactly what went on in there so you can bet there were lots of stories about Luke. Many did see him come out carrying Vader. They just knew he defeated the Sith. That's why Gideon started to freak out. He was scared as hell when he realized it was a Jedi and he probably knew who it was too. So he was going to off himself and take Grogu with him. But of course he failed at that.

It was better this way, to have a young Luke in his prime in a spinoff series than to have an old Luke in the sequels trying to be any different than his master Yoda who also was grumpy and had no interest in training another Jedi. It was time for the next gen to shine in the sequels, like Rey. In the end, it all makes more sense this way as it has played out. We still get to see Luke as a badass Jedi here but during his actual prime years instead of an old man. Plus, the way he did go out in the sequels was still pretty epic.

Return of the Jedi. The fight scene between Luke and Boba Fett in that movie was actually supposed to be much longer than what it was. There is a prop jet back that has a huge gash down the side of it which explains why it malfunctioned the way it did in the movie. The stuntman that did the fight scene talked about how disappointed he was in how the movie came out.
In the expanded universe it also says Boba had been drugged earlier on most likely by Bibb Fortuna thus the reason why Boba shot him without saying a word at the end of this episode, as well as giving a reason why a blind Han Solo was able to get the drop on him.
Jet packs are a Mandalorians greatest asset and biggest weakness. Jango Fett lost his head because his jet pack failed to operate and it came close to being the end of Boba Fett as well.

  • @kieronimo1

If you remember Emme, Leia killed Jabba in Return of the Jedi. Bib Fortuna (the Twi'lek that Boba shoots in the bonus scene) was his first in command, and had assumed the leader role. Remember, The Mando-verse begins five years after Return of the Jedi. So, the second deathstar is destroyed, Vader and the Emperor are dead and the New Republic is trying to get the galaxy back in order. This scene at the end of season two was so epic. It tied together the original trilogy, the prequals, the clone wars, star wars rebels (a bit) and the Mandalorian. It also gave Luke the bad-ass scene that everyone wanted from him in the Last Jedi. It sets up so much. I can't wait for you to see The Book of Boba Fett and Season three of the Mandalorian in time for Ahsoka. It's a great time to be a Star Wars fan (unless you are one of those moany fans who hate everything).

It the first edits of Lukes entrance they notice that people simply couldnt believe that it actually was Luke. Early test screenings put people in a sort of denial, (like alot of us felt at this scene at first) Audiences had a hard time accepting what they were seeing and that it actually was Luke, partly because of just "Luke Skywalker in a tv-show" and partly that Mark Hamills de-ageing wasnt as crisp as it could be. So they meticulously planned out every single edit to ease the viewer in to "accepting" that it actually was Luke. From X-wing - a Jedi in the corridor - Green saber - Lukes cut off hand, to finally the face reveal. They also realised pretty quickly that Luke was the only Jedi acceptable to take Grogu, anyone else showing up and the audience would have rejected the idea of Grogu going with them. That is the power of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars Universe.
Another genius move was the music. During the entire series they only use music made specifically for the show from composer Ludwig Göransson. When Luke reveals his face is the first time in the whole show where they play any of John Williams original score. The gut punch of hearing the force theme (or Binary sunset, which its actually called) perfectly punctuates Lukes introduction.

Star Wars is literally at its best when it focuses the story around family. Family that are blood related, and family who are very tight knit friends. When you stray away from that formula Star Wars starts to feel like just a lesser action movie. Family is the heart and soul of ANY story.

The black robe, the black glove, the green saber, the silver belt buckle. Grogu wasn't sleepy, he was drained. A dangerously large portion of his blood was taken for midichlorians, those elements that connect a force user to the Force. The poor kid was suffering. As to why Gideon would try to keep or kill Grogu beyond the testing, that goes to Gideon's ego, which is through the roof, obviously. Anything that might be perceived as a victory over Gideon must be dealt with.

This episode might just be my favourite of the entire series. Everything leading up to Luke showing up was amazing, and then when I saw that X-wing landing, and saw that it was carrying a Jedi, I was just going "OMG, is that Luke? Are we seeing Luke? That's totally Luke!" An absolute crowning moment of awesome. And I love how even in this moment of absolute awesome, rather than just focus on how cool it was, they still kept the focus on Grogu and his relationship with Mando.
The CGI to have a young Luke (younger than Mark Hamil, I mean) in this was pretty good, but not perfect. A fan who saw this decided to do his own, better deepfake version and put it on TH-cam. He got hired, and became part of the VFX team, so the next time you see them using this technology (not going to include any spoilers about when you'll see that) it looks significantly better.

That screech you hear when Mando appears on screen is from a recorder, a sort of wooden flute, which is also the instrument that plays those wispy duh-DAA, duh-DAAAAA, notes that are also part of Mando's theme. If you blow hard into the mouthpiece of a recorder, it produces that piercing shriek sound. I think composer Ludwig Goransson really likes the sound.

This is one of my favourite moments in star wars , cuz it puts into perspective just how absurdly fucken overpowered a trained force user is.
    We got civillians
    Trained army
    Then we got special forces
    Then we have advanced droids
Then we got Mandalorians who are literally born warriors
Then we have the mandalorian elite (like the best of the best)
Then it is shown that a mandalorian is struggling with a dark trooper.
And then comes a master jedi and fucken washes 30 dark troopers by themselves.
We dont get that in the other movies that much cuz they are from the perspective of a jedi/sith.
But here we really come to see what these dudes actually are capable of.
Which somehow makes sidious and vader more terrifying cuz they were arguably 2 of the strongest force users ever.
Really puts into perspective as to what the hell we were going up against and why people were afraid. To a normal everyday bloke, These dudes are literal gods.

    Great reaction!
It always seemed to me that Dr. Pershing, from the beginning, was concerned with the child's well being. If I remember correctly, in the first episode where he appeared in the holo communication to Moff Gideon he said that he had done all he could without risking serious harm to or killing the subject, so the implication was that he was not interested in killing Grogu to get every last ounce of material for the experiments but instead he was most interested in keeping Grogu alive and relatively healthy. As Grogu is a member of, apparently, a very rare race, the doctor seems most intent on preservation, which means he'd willingly help those who wanted to save Grogu. You got that feeling too, so that means I feel better believing that. 🙂
The actress playing Fennec Shand is fifty-seven. Dodging and bobbing and weaving like it's nothing. I'm fifty five and after years of damage I have trouble standing up from a chair, never mind getting up off of the floor. 😲
When the pew pew no longer works properly use it as a club. That's actually how a friend of mine's dad had to fight at times in Vietnam: use the rifle as a club and keep the combat knife handy just in case. 😲I don't remember if he came home with two or three Purple Hearts, but I do know his upper arm, side, and back were covered with scars. 😲
This was the perfect ending to the Mandolorian saga. Here is where it all ends for me. My friends who went on to watch the -Book- B@stardization of Boba Fett all hated the way it was done and its disrespect for the character with choppy stories and nonsensical events leading to a muddled mess. The few who went on to watch any of season 3 hated it and stopped watching after a couple of episodes. It's a complete shame that they seem to have worked so hard to undo the great story of The Mandolorian seasons 1 and 2.
You experience may differ, and I hope for your sake it does.

She should’ve let Koska contact Gideons ship. 15:29 Grogu has an endless stomach so even if they fed him he’d still be hungry. 16:27 when I saw the lone X-Wing I though only Luke flies a single X-Wing. The reason the Dark Troopers stopped when the Jedi appeared is because they sensed something stronger. When I saw the green Saber and the glove I knew for sure it was Luke. 17:40 Gideon realized that it was a Jedi coming to get Grogu and there was no chance of him winning. 18:32 Luke sure advanced in 6years since saving Vader. 19:11 this was the best kept secret on the set. They had to use CGI to deage him but since only a few worked on it the quality wasn’t that good. 19:36 a Jedi can not have attachments. A light saber doesn’t mean you’re a Jedi or a Sith. You have to be able to access the force to be a Jedi or a Sith. 20:28 that was a good line from Mando saying “don’t be afraid” as fear is the path to the dark side. 20:56 it looks like Grogu recognizes R2.

Yeah Luke's return just freaked the fandom out :)
and sadly Bo not only can't but won't take the DarkSaber without doing it right again. Many Mandalorians believe the purge happened because she took it from Sabine without defeating her in combat like tradition required.

I so remember watching this episode when it came out. The scene when the x-wing came. I just went: "nooooo.. it's a red herring". And then I did see the black clothes. And I was still red herring. It was when I did see the green lightsaber I started to believe, and at the hand/gloved hand, I knew. It was just so.. Perfect.
The funny part was that I almost called someone an idiot 1 week before because they said: "It will be Luke Skywalker". Never in my life had I believed Lucasfilm would be able to keep that secret. In 2020.

This episode was another one where as a super nerd fan I fell in love with Foloni's sense of world building over easter egging: The Dark Troopers were introduced in the video game Dark Forces in the 90s, in that game the boss battle was against the protoype Dark Trooper.

Despite how many epic cameos this season had I loved the fact the focus was always on Mando and Grogu and their journey, that's how you do it, unfortunately in other shows and franchises they let the fan service take over and miss the point. I think this season balanced out things perfectly.

I was late to seeing the Mandalorian, so by the time I watched this episode, I had heard about Luke's appearance. But it still gave me butterflies when the X-Wing landed and he proceeded to wade through the Dark Troopers like a Jedi master should.

The technology they used for Luke’s voice is amazing. However, this was their first attempt and they just did it all from the computer. Since then they have been overlaying it over an actor’s performance like they did in Kenobi with Vader’s voice over Hayden’s performance.

18:00 Really surprised you didn't realize it was Luke the second you saw the X-Wing. Or by the fact we knew it was Jedi associated with the Rebel Alliance (given he was flying a T-65B X-Wing). And then if neither of those gave it away, the moment we saw the green-bladed grenade-hilt lightsaber.
    - Misc. Fact: Luke's green-bladed lightsaber was originally made from the female end of the balance pipe to a Rolls Royce Derwent 8/9 jet engine, a 1916 No. 3 WWI Mk1 British Rifle Rod grenade, a Graflex 3-Cell Camera Flash Gun clamp (same as the Skywalker Lightsaber's), and a sink faucet knob for the pommel (specifically an Armitage Shanks "Starlight" model faucet knob).
19:29 Around this time period, Luke was just beginning to rebuild the Jedi Order. But aside from that, he's a high-ranking General in the New Republic's military (alongside Leia, Han, and Lando).
A reminder of the Darksaber's chain of ownership so far:
    *Tarre Vizsla (~c. 1050 BBY)*
Creator of the Darksaber. He built it sometime after 1050 BBY, when he was inducted into the Jedi Order. Following his death, the Darksaber was entombed within the Jedi Temple. However, it was later stolen by members of House Vizsla, becoming a symbol of Mandalorian leadership.
    *Tor Vizsla (-c. 42 BBY)*
Descendent of Tarre Vizsla. Mand'alor and wielder of the Darksaber until his death in 42 BBY. Following his death, it is unknown what happened to the Darksaber, though it was next seen in the possession of his descendant, Pre Vizsla.
    - Note: Jango Fett was Mand'alor after Tor Vizsla and before Pre Vizsla, though he never had the Darksaber.
    *Pre Vizsla (-c. 19 BBY)*
Descendant of Tarre Vizsla, he was the rightful holder of the Darksaber and mantle of Mand'alor during the Twilight of the Republic era (the last decades of the Republic) until he was killed in ritual combat by former Sith, Maul in 19 BBY.
    *Maul (19 BBY - 2 BBY)*
Former Sith Lord. He allied with and later betrayed Mand'alor Pre Vizsla in 19 BBY, claiming the Darksaber and title of Mand'alor. After being confronted by Darth Sidious shortly after, Maul was imprisoned by the Sith Master as the Darksaber was recovered by Prime Minister Almec and the Mandalorian Super Commandos, and returned to Maul after being freed from the Spire prison by Rook Kast (whom many currently believe is The Armorer). By 2 BBY, the Darksaber was at the Nightsisters' Lair on Dathomir, left by Maul. It was later taken by Mandalorian Sabine Wren after Maul abandoned it to leave for Tatooine to face Kenobi.
    - Maul was present and able to fight when the Darksaber was taken by Sabine and Ezra, so it can be said that despite Sabine not earning it in ritual combat (at least not yet), Maul's willing abandonment of the Darksaber legitimized Sabine's claim to it.
    - Since Ezra was also Maul's apprentice (if only briefly and barely), it could be argued that Ezra was a "rightful inheritor" of it when Maul abandoned it, since he picked it up and gave it to Sabine when they left Dathomir.
    *Sabine Wren (2 BBY)*
After taking it from Dathomir, Sabine soon after learned to wield the Darksaber thanks to training from Jedi Knight Kana Jarrus. After defeating Gar Saxon (the current "leader" of Mandalore under the Empire's occupation), who was wielding the Darksaber at the time in ritual combat (herself using Ezra's lightsaber), her claim to the Darksaber was legitimized. Though Sabine would break tradition by simply giving it to Bo-Katan Kryze in order to unify the remnants of the Mandalorian people.
    *Bo-Katan Kryze (2 BBY - ?)
After being given the Darksaber by Sabine, Bo-Katan wielded it as Mand'alor until she lost it in combat to Gideon prior to 9 ABY.
    *Moff Gideon (? - 9 ABY)*
At some point between 2 BBY and 9 ABY, Bo-Katan lost the Darksaber in combat to the Imperial Moff, Gideon. It was soon claimed by Din Djarin in combat.

Boba Fett inherited his Mandalorian armor from his father, Jango Fett. Jango was a Mandalorian and fought in the Mandalorian Civil War, but Boba is not a Mandalorian by creed. (Boba explained this in The Tragedy as he showed his chain code to Mando to justify taking his armor back.)

You know what he means, Andor Show show us.
No one is good or bad. More than most people are Gray, just like in real life. We also saw how "good" Rebel Alliances are.
You know, even Luke Skywalker in Star Wars Legends is better than Ghost Squad, and I'm still with the fact that in Seaqual they remade Luke as a character out of all the Egoistic,... Jedi like Mace who dug their own graves.

I'm one of the few who's reaction when they first watched this was not who it's it but laughter. I knew who it was when I saw the X Wing my buddy whose color blind, like sees the world in black and white color blind, asked what color was on the X Wings wing and I told him red and he started laughing saying that narrows it down to one in my book.
