  • How I Book Hotels In Thailand And Elsewhere
    Having lived in Thailand since 2003, I have booked many hotels while travelling around the country. Occasionally, I have spent an enormous amount of time trying to find the best deal. However, I almost invariably end up booking through Agoda. Not only are Agoda rates almost always the lowest, but it is a company I have learnt to trust over the years. In 2023 there were stories about another large online hotel Booking company (whose name I won't mention) who failed to pay accommodation hosts and whose customers turned up at hotels to find that they did not have a reservation. I have never had any such problems with Agoda, and the few minor issues I've had have been dealt with efficiently by their customer service representatives.
    Agoda is a company I trust and recommend. Use the following link to book your next hotel room!
    www.agoda.com/partners/partne...
    Disclaimer. I am an Agoda affiliate and will receive a small commission for any completed bookings that are made through my links. However, I only promote goods and services that I am happy with and use myself.
    Are You Interested In Learning How To Read Basic Thai?
    Being able to read enough basic Thai so that you can negotiate menus and read signs is incredibly useful, and it's not that difficult. It's not like Japanese or Chinese, where you have to remember thousands of characters. Like English, it's just consonants and vowels. Yes, there are more characters than English, but phonetically Thai is a lot more consistent. English vowels and vowel combinations change sound in different words (cough, rough, through, thought, bough, etc). In many ways, Thais is actually easier to learn than English. If you are interested, try the tutorials on my other TH-cam channel. With some effort and dedication, you will be able to read quite well after around six months.

    Video Description
    I've had some requests for a Hat Yai update, so here it is! Compared to my previous videos, things are gradually improving in Hat Yai. More tuk-tuks have appeared, more shops are reopening and hotels are hiring staff. There are a few tourists around the centre of town, but still not that many. My guess - and it is only a guess - is that the insurance requirement for entering Thailand is deterring quite a few Malaysian tourists. I think that once the insurance requirement is dropped it will make a big difference to Hat Yai's tourism industry.
    There are rumours that the insurance requirement will be dropped in June, but - I stress - these are only rumours and hearsay without any official confirmation. If that happens I think it will make a big difference. I'll plan to do another one of these updates in June to see if much has changed. If you want to be notified when that happens make sure to subscribe and click on the bell.
    Thank you for watching, liking and subscribing!
    It's very much appreciated.

      I think a lot of Malaysians and Singaporeans miss their little breaks to Hat Yai! Under normal circumstances it's a cheap and easy trip, and it allows people from those countries to experience a very different way of life.

      It turns out I was a bit naive thinking the lack of tourists was because of the insurance requirement. That is affecting some people, but from the comments I've received there are a host of other problems from a lack of transport to delays with getting passports in Malaysia. This Covid thing has been going on for so long now that it will take a while to get back to normal. Once the infrastructure gets back to normal and Thailand drops the Thailand pass and insurance requirement it will really help. Hopefully, that will happen in the next few months!

      @expatlivinginthailand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has begun, but there's still a long way to go! I thought it was just a case of insurance, but if you look through the comments there are several reasons. When/If Thailand drop the Thailand pass and all the requirements it will make a big difference, however, even when the tourists start to come back in numbers I don't think it will ever be the same as before.
      Hat Yai had already started to change when Central Festival opened in 2013. Many small businesses have closed for good and the atmosphere of the town has changed dramatically. I'll do another video in the coming weeks.

    I was in Hatyai on the first day Thailand binned the PCR on arrival test. The process of crossing through Bukit Kayu Hitam Malaysia-Dannok Thailand border was easy. What disappointed me was the lack of preparation by Hatyai Municipal council in anticipation of incoming tourist. Shops, 7 Eleven and massage parlours in vicinity of Lee Garden were closed, leaving the area akin to a no man’s land. I had to go to Haytai Central Mall to find food where the crowd was a lot larger. My guess is tourist number will remain a trickle until all stores and attractions are up running in full throttle. Thai Pass and tourism tax 300 baht should not be placed on Asean tourist if Thailand wants to see the resuscitation of its tourism sector.

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That area has been dead since this started and it started dying even before Covid. When Central Festival opened at the end of 2013 many businesses relocated there and moved away from the Lee Gardens Plaza area. It was already dying and Covid was just the final nail in the coffin. Tourism is a massive part of the Thai economy and I agree with you entirely. There should be incentives to encourage tourists to return, not additional expense and bureaucracy which will have the opposite effect. Everything needs to open up again, including those 7-Elevens!

      Thank you! I've made a few of these videos, but the most recent one felt different. The previous ones felt as if there was no end in sight. With this one I felt an air of optimism and anticipation. The taxi drivers and hotels can sense that people will return soon and they are starting to get ready. The big question is when! Some say June. Some say July. Some say August. Who knows? Will there be more outbreaks and more lockdowns? I'm just hoping for the best and I'm sure the situation will be a lot better by December!

      We have good friends who have just completed a 3 year assignment in KL. They told me that it was almost impossible to enter any place without proof of vaccine. Are you saying that's not correct? There is so much misinformation about everything these days. When I was last in Dannok I saw a van waiting to leave for Hat Yai, but there no passengers. Nice video. I am considering Hat Yai for a few days of my holidays but what are your thoughts on safety? I have read troubling reports about nighttime walking, mugging, terrorism or dengue on the other hand. It would not be my first time visiting Thailand, I have been to Bangkok, Krabi, Udonthani... Btw amazing Thai language! Is your family Thai? I am also travelling to possibly date and even marry later. Any videos about this topic would be appreciated.

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I'm married with young children and rarely go out at night. I did in my single days and never had a problem. A few Saturdays ago I went out after dark to look around the downtown area and didn't see or sense any problems. Several years ago (16 or 17 years?) there was a problem with young kids riding around on motorbikes at night snatching bags. My girlfriend at the time was a victim, but I haven't heard of any such problems for a long time. I would say just exercise common sense and listen to your gut feelings. Don't get steaming drunk and wander around secluded areas at night. Stay in well lit areas where there are other people and you shouldn't have any problems.
      In the past Hat Yai has been targeted by southern insurgents and people have been killed but, again, there haven't been any problems for a very long time. With dengue I have heard of people who have contracted it and at times the local municipality has erected large posters warning of dengue. The Aedes mosquitoes that carry it have distinctive black and white stripes and are active during the daytime. Take the usual precautions if you notice mosquitoes by wearing appropriate clothing and using repellent. The best advice is always to try to avoid being bitten. We get these mosquitoes around the house and I have been bitten, but so far no problems.
      I've found that whatever your read in the media is vastly over-exaggerated. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office actually advise people not to come to this part of Thailand unless travel is essential, but that is ridiculous.
      My fears? The only thing that really scares me in Thailand is the way that Thais drive. It's bad in the daytime, but it's even worse at night. A young girl at my daughter's school was mown down last week and the security guard at the school had part of his leg amputated after a motorcycle crash. So many lives are lost on Thai roads each year (about one an hour on average, although some say the figure is a lot higher) and nothing is ever done to improve matters.
      It amazes me that people talk about mugging, terrorism and dengue etc, but the biggest danger in Thailand, that of Thai roads, is hardly ever mentioned.
      Hope that helps! It's just my personal opinion.

    Latest from the CSSA, starting 1st June, the Thailand Pass will be auto generated upon application along with the proof of vaccine, your insurance and passport. Accordingly, its not an application waiting for approval like before but more like a pass making it a check item like the TM6 entry form. The insurance deal is not a big deal as you need your medical and travel coverage. By the way, Thais coming back here are exempted from the Thailand Pass. I will be back in August just for 1 night and the next day got my ThaiViet Air ticket to Suvarnabhumi for only RM42.00 one way. Ticket prices are on the rise but for the KL- Bkk- Kl air fares are still around Rm500.00 if you purchase them early. By July maybe, just maybe the tour buses from Singapore and Malaysia will eventually begin again and by that time, more easing with the Thailand Pass. I tune in to the CCSA announcement and the other TH-camrs who tend to update the latest news. I also took note of Agoda offering hotels in Hat Yai without that SHA + price. Its good to note that Thailand is on its way to ease restrictions. Its good eventually for Hat Yai but hopefully, the things that we the tourist face before the closure of borders will not appear again, you know what I am implying Phil. Thailand Pass is going to stay so no issues then.

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sham, thanks for the update. As I think I've said before, it doesn't affect me so I don't tend to keep up to date. If this is about health, why should Thais be exempted? The virus has nothing to do with what nationality you are. None of this makes any sense, but hopefully it will keep improving.

    • @norhishamothman4152
      @norhishamothman4152 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Latest is that all 9 land border crossings fully opened as stated by the ambassador to Thailand. He did stated that the Thailand Pass and insurance were the 2 factors that Malaysians are yet travelling like before so hopefully the CCSA will take note, not only for fellow Asean tourists but worldwide. Yes, some of the locals in Hat Yai are not affected but the border crossings is a good indication for trade and travel to resume.

There was news on Facebook last few months saying that the insurance cost RM500... And they had to spend RM1k because of the quarantine (back at the time quarantine is required)... But, I can say lack of information is why there's less Malaysian tourist...

      Many thanks for your comment. The feedback I've received has been fantastic and has given me a much better insight as to why tourists aren't coming. As you say, there is a lack of information and also misinformation. Some people have said insurance is cheap, but it is a problem for other people. If people only cross the border for a few hours the insurance is very expensive and if they have large families the cost soon adds up. The sooner that all these requirements end, the better.

    Hi Phil, isn't the Hatyai folks speak the same thai national language? I guess with some local accent.

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are northern, northeast and southern dialects (maybe more) which get spoken in those regions, but many Thais can also speak the central dialect, which is a kind of lingua franca in Thailand. I speak the central Thai dialect with my wife, but she speaks the southern dialect with her family. It sounds like a different person speaking when she switches dialects and I understand very little of the southern dialect.
      I often have problems communicating with rural and/or older people in the south, who only speak the southern dialect. My wife's parents would be examples of this. Older southern Thais who have only worked in the countryside and didn't have much education struggle with the central dialect.
      It's a bit more than just an accent. The tones are different and the southern Thai dialect has its own words. I've been told that even Thais from Bangkok and the central region have problems with the southern dialect. This isn't a problem unique to Thailand. Back in the UK I struggle with heavy scouse, Geordie and Glasgow accents!

There's a narrative for every story and news outlets just regurgitate the narrative with a complete lack of any investigative journalism or critical thinking. The major media channels are the worst culprits, mainly because of who controls them. The only real analysis comes from some small, independent channels. There are a few on TH-cam, but they run the risk of being banned if they go against the narrative. WION, the Indian channel, has run some good stories. They have a pro India, anti Pakistan, anti China agenda, but they also report on things that the Western media won't touch. We are living in dangerous times and the media is the main enemy. Covod Insurance is one problem for Malaysians as most will stay for a minimum of two nights.minimum insurance in Thailand is three months. Next is vehicle insurance which is compulsory as most malaysians will drive their cars or bikes across the border. Before covid you could buy vehicle insurance for two weeks minimum. Now it is three months minimum. Third is Malaysian Government insists on 72 hours Rapid Antigen Test.for Malaysians returning from Abroad to malaysia.. On arrival in Malaysia. You must have a document to state you had a RPK test 72 hours before, otherwise you will be subjected to testing and USD 25.will be charged to Get the test.

      To get the test done in Malaysia is cheaper USD 12.00 compared to Thailand. However at the border it is USD 25.00 charges. In Thailand you have to go to a private hospital to get the test done as government hospitals are for thais only. Private hospital will do it for Bhat 2000 to 2500 with official certificate and receipts. So now Cambodia and Vietnam as well as Indonesia are open without restrictions and no covid insurancend . many malaysians are rushing to those countries.. Eventually, the border crossings in Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis began full reopening ( there are 9 in total ). I have yet to read any restrictions for Malaysians to travel except for the travel advisory on hot spots like Sri Lanka or Ukraine. Other Asean nations have earlier eased their entry requirements except for Mynmar which still need you to quarantine in a hotel. The vast majority of Malaysians will already be vaccinated because it was almost impossible to do anything or go anywhere in Malaysia during Covid without being vaccinated. The only difference now compared to pre-Covid is that visitors (provided they are vaccinated) need to have a minimum 10,000 USD health insurance cover. Are there some other reasons that are deterring Malaysians from visiting? Are Malaysians worried about the health risk?
