Same could be said of Schumann, Mendelssohn and Dvorak. We know them by their symphonies, which are first rate and still in the active repertoire. But the quartets were written less for a mass audience, more for connoisseurs and mainly for the players themselves. So they're more adventurous and at the same time more intimate. Granted I'm a quartet player but I think the quartets sometimes capture the greatness of the composer better than any other medium.
Sorry, the da capo (repeat) markings by the composer are instructions, not suggestions; this performance has been reduced to little more than quarter of an hour and thus diminished its immense stature. The practice of ignoring repeats in the music of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven is indefensible.
I agree in general. First repeats should be mandatory, and of course menuet repeats and theme and variation repeats must be. In fact in Haydn the repeat was intended to be an opportunity for the performer to add variation and embellishment. But sometimes in 19th century works there are second-half-of-the-movement repeats which, while marked, were probably intended by the composer to be optional -- time-fillers if needed. It's okay to skip those I think.
