A few nights ago my house in Vermont was severely damaged by a sudden flood along a little brook that has given such joy and peace over the years. In the midst of the aftermath, this is the one one piece of music I chose to hear-most especially the lento. And it soothes my soul. Thank you, wonderful musicians. Thank you, Antonin.
Bearing in mind that these players are busy giving concerts as lead members of the New York Philharmonic it is very impressive that they have the time to give quartet concerts of such high standard.

I rediscovered this piece today by chance. Such a beautiful masterpiece. Like finding an old friend after years of being out of sight and out of mind. And as familiar as if no time had passed. Pure joy.
Your viola solo sounds awesome Cynthia! I remember when we were both performing together at the Hidden Valley Music School in California many long years ago! You were awesome then too! I love Dvorak's American and have performed it many times, and even on tour.
I still remember when I was in the elementary school, I participated in a quartet with my violin teacher and practiced this song. As a 10-year-old kid, I was amazed by the elegant sounds and felt as if I were on the adventure to discover America. I tried to look it up on TH-cam but I couldn't find the whole version. Ten years have passed, it has reminded me of it thousands of times like an earworm. However, I still couldn't find the whole song. It is today that when I was freely roaming on TH-cam, I felt a sense of urge that made me come here. Thankfully, I found the whole version finally and could relive the past experience.🥰🥰🥰
A ten-year-old's fresh energy sounds perfect for this piece. Congratulations to you and your teacher! Whenever I get discouraged about my country, America, I'm so grateful that someone from another continent, Antonin Dvorak, wrote this life-giving tribute!
Any time you see a piece by Dvorak that you haven't heard, it pays to go ahead and play it. I've always been glad I did. He and several others were blessed with the melody gene.
Jordan, Dvorak is an absolute genius. There is no other way to describe his abilities with composition. He makes music sound new. He makes me happy. I'm glad that you discovered him.
The Prazak Group has a recording on TH-cam that is just amazing. By far my favorite. All the little details are spot on and the passion at intensity at which it is played does not compare to anyone else. Highly recommend th-cam.com/video/pV-kbAydcwk/w-d-xo.html
Absolutely beautiful. The Prazak Quartet do a fine one too. They play in a beautiful grand house with views of both inside and out. Posted by messer citrazzo. Well worth a listen imho.
In this video in 24 min "Spillville, Then and Now (documentary on Antonín Dvořák's time in Iowa)" they say he heard some bird that had a strange sound...He was not able to write down the notes..He said "That damn bird" ..His family thought that his symphonies came from their garden in Vysoka. He knew about every nest in trees that he planted. He said "Listen to them they are the greatest masters."
how can all those people in the audience stay with their heads perfectly still during the finale??!?!? When I listen to the finale I always physically need to shake my head...; one of the best three string quartets ever (together with Death and the Maiden and Beethoven's Op 131)
I have never understood that either. Why does the audience always sit so motionless? The players themselves are rocking and headbangung! I know when I go to a concert, I nod my head a lot :) Classical Headbanging :)
Stillness arises from total absorption in the experience, perhaps entranced. Bouncing around, which some do, bouncing heads and so on usually means the person is not that deeply involved in the music. That probably doesn't apply to disco and similar, which has more earthy aims.

Sus temas bohemios-americanos: maravilla como en su Nuevo Mundo. Y excelente la interpretación de estos loables músicos de NYP. GRACIAS 🙂!!!
You must listen to this next to the Turkey river in Spillville where Dvorak went for inspiration. Very fitting next to riverside park. The birds, occasional bald eagle, the trees, the babbling creek, snakes rabbits, occasional white tail coming for a drink… Very fitting scene for listening to this.
Michael, This is a beautiful performance of this piece. I also really like their version of Gershwin's Lullaby, which was probably performed on the same day. I was glad I noticed it and selected it as my next play. This group is awesome!!!
Just a couple of beautifully-played lines could be a treat, as an interlude between other pieces?! Achieving beautiful tone, not how many phrases you can do a ho-hum rendition of, is what gives lasting joy. (That's what I told my pre-teen daughter when she was learning violin)
How apt that members of the New York Philharmonic orchestra the orchestra that Dvorak took charge of during his sojourn in America . He produced this , a string quintet with overtones of Native Indian rhythms and of course Symphony No 9 from the new world 🌍 . From the UK 🇬🇧
Honor to reverend Simeon Pease Cheney, the New Yorker who inspired Dvorak with his transcriptions of bird´s chants of New England. Unfortunately, he died in 1890 and never enjoyed this jewel.
@@BetterMe981 The marking is "vivace ma non troppo." Dvorak's music is very dramatic, and that in itself is a very vague tempo marking. The speed here is definitely lively, but they left much room to increase their dynamics and speed. You can't say it's "too fast". Maybe too fast in YOUR OPINION, but definitely a good interpretation in general.
Dvořak said he is working hard and is doing well, that he would never write Quintet with two violins and Quartet F-major, if he would never visit America.
The crispiest viola in any recording of the American I've ever heard. That opening gets me every time.
Assolutamente fantastico. La viola poi ha un suono straordinario! Grazie per il video😊

Some of the finest playing by the inner parts in a string quartet that you are likely to hear.
