Odysseus saying he loves Calypso, but not how she wants is based on something he says in the Odyssey. He never hated Calypso in the Odyssey, he understands the lengths people will go for love, hell, just look at his journey so far and why he does anything, he even says he’s grateful for her giving him shelter and food for 7 years. He cared about her and never resented her, but he just didn’t love her that way, so he left.
This song just gives so many conflicting vibes, first its absalutly gorgeous (Jorge can't write bad songs, and Wangui's voice is angelic), but second is that, although Calypso sounds so genuine (and I think she is), what she's saying isn't really an apology and isn't taking acountablity for how she's hurt Odysseus (saying "IF I hurt you, IF I ambushed you" ect.) She is extremely lonely and very touch starved and has most likely hyped up the thought of romance so much that it's probably the only form of conection she wants, anything else is not worth her suffering. But it's the fact that she doesn't listen to Ody, his first words told her he had a wife and she dismissed it, he told her he wanted to go home and she trapped him there, he started fighting back and she laughed, but even after that she had 7 years to dial it back, to accept that Ody wasn't going to love her and instead start to actually form a conection with him but from the end of Love in Paradise and this song it's clear she just doesn't want that. She selfishly wants Odysseus to love her and any other option is not good enought and truly cannot see that thinking like that is wrong and dehuminasing. After his first words being about his wife and 7 years passing it's the fact she still has to ask "why in the world wont you love me too?" Calypso is a sympathetic character and Jay did a great job at portaying that, but my favorite part is how Odysseus walks away blank faced, he doesn't owe her anything, he didn't have a say in the last *cough* 20 years *cough* of his life and Calypso still isn't letting him speak. He just wants to get home and he deserves too after what he's been through. Calypso can be sorry but Odysseus doesn't have to forgive her.
I took his "I love you" slightly differently. I took that as his revenge (fitting, given this is the Vengeance saga). He can't hurt her physically, but he can emotionally cut her to the quick to get some small petty payback for all she's put him through, and she just handed him the weapon to do it.
so you need to understand is that she didn't bring him to her island. She was trapped on the island because of Zeus (after a war, because she sided with her Father who was against Zeus) and the thing is that no one can find the island unless they are put there by Zeus. So Odysseus's punishment is that he is trapped on the island with Calypso, but because of Athena he is released. She is also an immortal being that has had no interaction with anyone before this. and side note, in some versions after Odysseus leaves she kills herself because she can't stand the idea of being alone any longer.
I have to admit, this is a very compelling villain song. It doesn’t make me dislike her less or excuse anything she’s done, but it does try to explain her actions. To Calypso, Odysseus actually was her dream come true and no one wants to let go of that. Then when it all falls apart, she blames the person who gave her hope because it’s not like she’s going to blame herself for hoping ╮(. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)╭ Nothing can make me like you, Calypso, but dang is this song catchy and rife with the very familiar feeling of unrequited love.
I really did except some sort of redemption for Calypso. Some genuine apology and sending off, but instead she doubles down. Ody was right in just walking off like that.
sadly i dont see as redemption since this kind thing she doing to ody here is 1 to 1 what my girlfriend abuses ex did to her when my girlfriend finally drop her ass
I do sympathise with calypso. Not because what she did was not wrong. But I can see how she thought she was genuinly right. She genuinly cant understand Ody's feelings, she has no base for it. She didnt trap him there, she couldnt release him even if she wanted to, she is trapped there herself. Zeus is the one that controls her island. She thought that Z showed her mercy and gave her someone she could spend the rest of eternity with, the thought it was the will of the gods for him to be there. She has no other perspectives to view it from.
Furthermore, she thought they were both trapped there for the rest of their lives. In which case Odysseus' mindset would be forever unhealthy for the both of them, as he pushed her away for something he could never have again. It makes sense for her to have thought it would be best for the both of them, if she were to convince him or "wear him down" until he loved her. She was wrong to think that he was as trapped as she was, and she was wrong to think that she could change his mind... and she was wrong to be as forceful with her methods as she was, even if she were a lot less forceful than she were in The Odyssey. But in almost every conceivable case, she would not have been wrong in anything but her forcefulness. In almost every conceivable case, a man could be persuaded and swayed over the course of his monotonous and isolated life, some faster than others. And in almost every conceivable case, a man would not be excused by the gods and have his punishment retracted.
I think from a womans point of view , she has that unrequited love for him, and he doesnt love her obviously. I think most woman can relate to this. I think also.most people if you are the person in love and the other leaves you feel that how will i ever get over you, even when my abuser left me i still would of gone back in a second and had to have counselling to learn to live and move on with the love that i still had.
3:30 "it's an apology song" well, it's as good as the ukulele one... She literally says "I'm sorry you felt that way, but I'm not sorry for what I did"
@@stroodledoodles exactly. Girl had SEVEN freaking years to apologize for sexually harrassing the man, if not worse, and only did it when Ody was finally given the choice to leave. Yeah she not sorry at all for what she did. Probably would have continued to push her feelings on him without apologizing if not for that. Also, girl doesnt see anyone else for 100 years and her first reaction is 'ima fuk him sum day, he cant resist forever!' not 'new friend!!! :D finally someone to talk to'
She literally does say she’s sorry for what she did. It’s basically the only thing she does apologize for. What she says she won’t apologize for is how she feels. Not saying she wasn’t wrong, she absolutely was very wrong, but she didn’t say she’s not sorry for what she did, she said she’s not sorry for how she felt.
@zjmiller6627 she doesn't though, the words "I'm sorry for what I did" never leave her mouth. She said "if I came on too strong, or if I ambushed you, for that I say I was wrong". She doesn't apologise, she admits that what she did was bad.

Odysseus getting blown to her island was a punishment for her as well as Odysseus.
I took his "I love you" slightly differently. I took that as his revenge (fitting, given this is the Vengeance saga). He can't hurt her physically, but he can emotionally cut her to the quick to get some small petty payback for all she's put him through, and she just handed him the weapon to do it.

And in other versions she murders the children she forced him to father on her because they would remind her of him.
This song is truly so beautiful but it doesn't excuse her behaviour in Love in paradise

Zeus trapped calypso for being on the wrong side of titans vs gods. Zeus trapped Odysseys there as well
She didn't really trap Odysseus, she's trapped on her island, it's not like she could have taken him anywhere.
