Making an Organic Aluminum Sculpture out of Styrofoam!

  • Here are some more photos of the finished cast aluminum sculpture: / cqw3knyo7ch
    Thanks again to my classmates Viktoria and Ellison and my professor Kevin for helping with the aluminum pour!
    Also a little more clarification on the step I wasn't sure about, where nitrogen was being injected into the molten aluminum. This is called degassing, the nitrogen flowing through the aluminum bonds to hydrogen atoms in the liquid. The aluminum has previously pulled the hydrogen from the atmosphere, but removing this makes the aluminum more pure and makes for better casts.

    Peter, I doubt you'll see this but I just wanted to thank you. On 13th April one of my closest friends took their own life and it has been incredibly difficult to cope with as they were a lot of people's rock, including my own. Not long before they passed, we were talking about you. Just general chit-chat that you don't think about so much until you look back after they're gone and realise there was more to it. We were talking about how your content had made both of our individual depressions ease. They used to have manic episodes and your videos, especially the drawing your feelings ones, would help to calm and ground them. They, like I'm sure many do, turned to your videos in times of pure anguish in order to find some kind of hope and meaning. Whether it was your calm tone or just the way you have with words, I simply can't know now, but there was something special about you and your content that just helped to keep them grounded and safe. I genuinely believe that you and your videos helped to keep my friend alive that little bit longer. If it weren't for your videos, I may not have had so many of the memories of my friend I get to hold dear. So, thank you, Peter. While I'm sad they aren't here anymore, I'm very grateful that you helped to keep them going without even realising it. Stay safe anyone who reads this, you are loved xx

    Regarding the respirator, the filters you have on are more for dust over vapours. Definingly recommend picking up a set of vapour/gas filters for the mask

    This was awesome - the intro, your explanation of the process, the change of seeing you work in a really physical medium and interacting with other people, the part where you re-textured the sculpture with the needle gadget, and your happy smile at the end.
    Usually when I watch videos, if I miss a part I just keep going, but with this one I went back and watched every bit. I hope you're pleased with the end result (both the sculpture and the video) because they're both great.

    Hey Peter! Love this piece, not sure if you’ll see this but thought I’d put it here anyway: I’m studying you in college !! We had a project to chose an artist we love to experiment with their work, and I chose you!!!!! The style was so cool to work in and I loved analysing your art, and the project has helped me decide where I want to go next with my own art: biomorphic forms! Im so excited to get to develop my own style at school and thank you for everything you do, you and your work are fantastic 😼

    Peter, we used those Needle Scalers in the Navy to remove paint from the ship exterior prior to repainting. They were called Needle Guns when we used them and I spent many long hot summer hours using them. At the end of the day your hands and arms would be numb from the vibrations all day.

    Never new there were that many steps in casting a sculpture, very interesting. This piece looks absolutely stunning though! The carbon soot built up makes the sculpture seem like it has some sort of permanent shadow, like it doesn’t abide by the light physics of this world

    Hullo Peter, thanks for sharing this casting experience with us! I remember when I was working with molten glass and getting the volume of glass for the form was something that I found very difficult! I had a more enjoyable experience creating pieces “on the pipe” but making a mold was a class requirement. I still have quite a few jars, glasses, cups that I made in college. Gosh that was back in 1981! I may be getting just a bit crusty! Thank you for sharing all of your artistic endeavors, I enjoy watching your videos. I wish recording my artwork process was easier back then! No internet, well not one that regular people had access to! Take care of yourself and keep yourself safe and healthy! See ya next video!

    Filming welding and casting is like filming rocket engines. NASA still uses high speed analog film cameras with SLS missions for a reason. No digital camera can reach that level of capturing dynamics of light-shadow areas. Perhaps in near future it will be possible.

I'm not sure if you've read Leviathan Falls which is the first book in The Expanse series but in that book there's an alien lifeform that kind of eats or overtakes human and mechanical forms, then spits out reconstructions of those forms to build moving parts that are useful to it. This sculpture reminds me of a spine that has been grown by that alien lifeform. Super rad.

    • @peter_draws
      @peter_draws  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah paper mache could work, really anything. The only problem is that the softer the material is, the more likely it is to get deformed by the sand packing process. However I’ve even made molds of bouquets of flowers and branches of leaves. While these got squished a lot, the textures and shapes in the resulting metal sculpture were really cool.
